While STO has some expensive ships especially if someone decides to spend hundreds of dollars gambling for the ship due to being unlucky instead of purchasing it by selling lockbox keys on the Exchange, there are lots of ships in other games that cost over $1000. Based on the current cost of lockbox keys and the current currency limit of 2 billion Energy Credits, any ship purchased with Energy Credits has a maximum cost of just over $200.
Star Citizen has a lot of ships in the $200 to $1000 price change which can be purchased directly, purchased with ingame currency, constantly upgrading to more expensive ships. There are a few ships in the concept phase that cost over $1000. Also, most of the ships require multiple players to play effectively. Each ship comes with a 6 month to lifetime insurance for losing the ship that reimburses the ship when destroyed. However some ships are limited to their Concierge program where it costs a minimum of spending $1,000 ingame to qualify for a top hat, monocle, and a few other cosmetic rewards with the first ship requires spending $10,000 ingame. Since the game is only in playable alpha with likely many years to go before the final release or if it ever officially launches, then it is not known how expensive these ships will be at launch.
Eve Online has its largest ships at over $1000 and its insurance only pays a fraction of the cost of the lost ship. Each ship can be purchased with ingame currency. Which is why some of the larger Eve Online battles get into a news.
Then there is the issue of starship models. Playmobil has a TOS Enterprise that costs about $550 and Lego has a Imperial Star Destroyer that costs about $650. Eaglemoss has a gold-plated TOS Constitution that costs $200. Is there any expensive starships from other video games, toy companies, or model companies that you can think of?

That EC cap is why a lot of the more popular ships are no longer on the exchange and can only be gotten by direct trade for considerably larger sums than 2 billion EC.
Star Citizen is the poster child for overpriced ships, so much so that it has become the meme for that kind of thing. On the other hand, most of its worst offenders are ships that are meant to be purchased by a group and cannot even be properly flown by one person.
That group purchase idea is also part of EVE Online, their most expensive ships are meant to be corporate/guild/whatever you want to call it, purchases.
STO does not have any provision for that sort of group purchase, there is neither massively organized PvP nor any way to actually crew a ship with multiple players, in space the ship is the character.
I was actually surprised that aside from 1 ship in Star Citizen and a couple of reskins, no other playable ship in Star Citizen costs more than $1000. Star Citizen players can pledge for ships that cost up to $3000, but they are currently not playable and as you and I have said, most of Star Citizen's ships require a crew to operate. Technically, it is possible to run every Star Citizen ship with one player, but some ships lose 90% of their effectiveness while other ships are only slightly less effective than have the full crew of 2 or 3. I think most of the problem with Star Citizen and their expensive ships over Eve is that Star Citizen is only in alpha while Eve has been out for almost 20 years. Star Citizen is essentially an extremely profitable crowdfunding platform.
