There's Vanity Shields that can effectively change the textures of your ship, but won't change the geometry of it. There's a handful of engines and deflectors that add a small extra to your ship, like a glowy light coming out, and a very few like the Borg set or Competive Wargames engines that have a physical piece that sticks out.

Also, there are Holo Emitters available from the GPL store (in game currency store, gained via the Ferengi Admiralty [lvl 52+] or by playing Dabo with EC) that will change the geometry of your ship to be another, but there's very few ships or entities (like a Gekli) available currently, and that hasn't really been touched in years.

Geometry can change a bit through some items like reputation items, but not all have such effect, like warp trails, pointy borg projections, glow effects; ships taking damage also changes them to some extent temporarily. Then there's active or passive powers that can alter your ship a bit, like becoming transparent in various ways (different cloaks), passing through objects (phase cloak), becoming dark (mask energy signature), and so on.

Ships are the main source of funding for STO since all playable content is free to play without monthly fees or paid expansions .

Letting you buy one cheap ship and use it as every other ship including the "hero" ships like the Constitution wouldn't keep the lights on.

But what if you could only use skins from ships you own? People might buy ships just for the look even if the stats were terrible. People could buy ships they like the stats of but hate the look. I think there could be an unmined seam of sales here.

Might have to limit the skins to ships that are at least vaguely similar or you could end up with a ship that looks like the Enterprise J and moves like the Defiant.

They're already mining that seam, just piece-meal instead of in one go, via various re-mixes, like Legendary variants(especially ones after the 10th Anniversary pack, though that had some real boosts to ships like the Defiant), Mirror pack variants (like the Mirror Galaxy-X becoming comparable a Vengeance, if a bit slow), and now just a straight-up remix that comes with a new look for the T6 Malachowski/Clarke Multi-Mission Command Cruiser that can use the Reliant-series skins but can use dual/-heavy/quad cannons and has a hangar.

I've long been an advocate of what you're talking about, but Cryptic seems to not be interested in going that route. I think even having it be limited to end-game ships (so no using a T1 or T2 Connie to get an end-game one) and of same/similar class of ship won't be appealing anymore to Cryptic when they can just re-release a variant of a popular ship (possibly even more than once).

It's true I'd rather be able to use any other KDF ship I own as the skin for the flattened pancake q-UGH! battecruiser.

It will never happen, but it would be nice if Cryptic would let you use other T6 skins you own in addition to what they already allow for T6 ships using their T1-T5 variants. That wouldn't hurt sales because you wouldn't be able to use a skin without buying the ship, and you wouldn't be able to use the T1 Connie skin with any T6 ships.

Space Barbie is my endgame, so I'd buy more ships if I could use a skin I liked with another ship that had nice stats but a look I disliked (q-UGH, gah!)

True but the Holo emitters are short term one offs.

what if when you by a ship. it comes with a vanity shield ( of self ). so you have to by the ship. to use the look. criptic still gets paid and you still get the option. and they can still make it tier locked.

I cant brain I have the dumb

Or just make all T6 ship skins you own be usable with every other ship you own, see my reply to @askatus just above your post.

That way you can use the ship as a starting costume and then modify it with other visuals from shields, deflectors, engines.

IIRC, there is ONE item allowing you to do that but only for shuttles/fighters, an unlimited holo-emitter mimicking the Phoenix.
