Really need better options on attaining the crystals. Or have more option attaining items that are bought by crystals to enhance the game more. Kind of annoying to be stuck on something you need to buy with crystals and no option to attain more quickly

There's actually quite a few options depending on how far you've progressed.
Ferengi and Klingon Admiralty tracks (Probably moreso Klingon track)
Trading rep marks after hitting Tier 5
Dilithium mining (both public and fleet mines)
Missions
TFOs
Using the Random TFO (gives bonus marks)
Trading Zen for Dilithium (requires real cash money, but is an option)
* Doing events for extra days after completing them: you get 8,000 dil day 1, then 9, 10, 11, 12,000... dil on following days. Also, you can get the first 8,000 dil by doing the event a second time on the day that you finish it.
By the time my new characters level the reputations to tier 5 I usually am sitting on over 400,000 unrefined dilithium and have 200,000+ refined.

I'm STILL refining on my KDF recruit. Kinda fell off the random TFO objectives though. Should probably do a few. And that's not counting the rep marks I got waiting to convert because I haven't burned through the raw DL yet!
You can refine 8k dilithium per toon per day. So if you have 10 toons, you can rake in 80k dilithium per day.
I do have to ask though, when you say "increase crystals earned", are you wanting to just earn dilithium quicker, or are you wanting a refinement cap increase?

Once a character gets the additional dil for maxed out spec trees I believe 2 admiralty cycles per day are enough to reach the daily refinement limit on a character. The time effort for this is 5 minutes/character.

You are correct, even if you fall a little short of the daily refine, having one or two characters farming Contraband more then makes up the gap.
If there is a problem with attaining Dilithium, the problem is that it's too easy.

That depends on which admiralty missions you get... as some reward more than others.
If you don't get missions that directly reward Dilithium, then you pick missions that award the highest XP. If you're maxed out on your specializations, you get Dilithium every time you 'level' which can make up for it. You can also supplement any bad days you have with Contraband, that nets you another 2k.
- How good are your cards? - Which campaign do you focus on? - How far apart are the 2 daily cycles? - How smart do you use your skip tokens? - Are alle spec trees maxed?
I gave up doffing aside from contraband and boff recruitments 2-3 years ago and rely on Admiralty entirely ever since. There hasn’t been a day where I was unable to refine less than the max on any of my 13 chars. Of course it’s an average thingy. On some days I don’t get 8k out of admiralty, on others a lot more. The current event is great for example.
With no new fleetholdings and all epic builds I have some substantial resources at my disposal for not much effort taken there. Considering the dil to zen ratio I suspect a lot in game are in such a position.

in a matter of a couple weeks you could sit on hundreds of thousands of unrefined Dilithium. I cherry pick my admiralty and get the juicy 1-3k dilithium rewards as well as any event rewards. My one toon has 1 mil unrefined just from TFO's finished events and admiralty. It adds up quick.

They are pretty short (5ish mins) and award 720 dil each.

A lot factors into it for sure.
