The announcement in the title. What does it mean when that pops up during the Build-A-Rocket event? is there an actual extra supah-sekrit stash of rokkit partz somewhere? Does it indicate anything at all?
IIRC it means that pile has more than one part in it. Grab then grab again until you get a purple or the parts are all gone.
This doesn't really work. Since grabbing parts is unavailable as soon as you get a part you don't have, or a better part than you do have.
Hmm, it's been a year but I do recall getting more than one part out of some piles.
If you're right then it does work if you already have a part of that kind, just not if it's your first part of that kind?
Say your first part is green, which they generally are, we'll use hull here. In the past you could finish up a pile, you know since you're mainly just getting the junk. This year, as soon as you get a blue hull, the search for parts will not popup. You can get lucky and it will and you can snatch the extra. But most times, you have to take the part to the table and go seek another.

Thanks, all the posts about unfair AFK penalties has kept me from trying it this year.

I've not gotten any AFKs so far in the rocket build, I'm not saying it's not impossible to get but it's not "you get AFK everytime you try" at least not for me I've tried 2-3 times so far this year and had no issues.
So today I think I actually found the cache? Maybe? I scavenged as normal, from a hull pile, and then there was a second piece out of the pile (a physical graphic asset) which let me pick up an additional part (I don't remember the exact dialog box). I then got an "Engine Parts" item which had a green icon whose picture looked like a "blank" ship impulse engine. It was not a rocket engine part, since it didn't say "good" or anything else in front of the name. As far as I can tell, it did absolutely nothing, did not give me any actual item in my inventory, and did not contribute to the event in any way.
That's different. Sometimes you will get an extra part from a pile that you can pick up. Usually it's an uncommon part. Most of the time I get a green engine part.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.

It's been like that every year. Once you get a part that's usable, you can't get another from that pile or any pile until you go drop it off. The only way past this is if you hammer your F key to get in one more pull before the game realizes that you have the part and locks you out. It's certainly not new this year. This is not counting the random chance extra part that falls out of the pile.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

Ok, but if the current part in your rocket is green and you find a green you can keep scavenging and find another one that might be better than green.
I never bother with it since finding it is usually too far out of my way.

I assume you're replying to me? If so, the green engine part I got was not an event engine part - it didn't have the same icon type, nor did it say "good" or "great" or whatever in front of it. And there was no notification that I got a part to use, or that I got a part that was of no use, as there is normally when you pick up an event item.

I got that message, saw everyone else was at their workstations so figured it must have been me.
As it turned out the pile let me pick again and again. Ended up with 9 pieces of junk though so not really a big deal.

The announcement means that a special pile has been 'found' that contains giant supply of 'junk' parts. There are a handful of locations scattered across the map where one might be found. I'm not sure I understand the purpose of it, because you can only use up so much junk in the 60-second refine phase, and you'll collect at least that much gathering from normal piles that actually have parts for your rocket instead of just junk.
This is the answer. There are definitely some secret special piles that appear when that announcement comes. They aren't the normal piles always on the map, and are easy to miss as they are also semi hidden.
They ultimately just aren't important or worth looking for.

Yes, it's one of the random "events" that can happen, which includes the common "your bench caught fire", the rarer spiders coming out of the pile and the rarest lvl200 Na'kuhl agent raid boss that gives everyone who participates purple parts.
The last one isn't true.

Sorry guys... but this is a Necro.
BTW... I've really only ever found one extra part occasionally. Never the jackpot pile.
