An old friend got us into STO because we are in a game lul. We played this game before but the P2win nature of funding the game has always steered us clear of STO like hooker that smells a bit too much like unbaked bread.
Now that we are here though I wanted to share a moment of revelation. We've been working on our reputations and starships. We've been spending a few dollars here and there we were discussing the "what is next moment." So, we've been gearing and we were asking about doing heroic TFO's. "nobody really does them," was the response...."well, because there is no reason to since there is no real reward." So, not only is the star ship ownership game pay 2 win but the entire system of gearing to fight the next challenge has been cut to ribbons and people literally grind this gear and these ships to hit some arbituary number on a dps meter? "Yep." Silence...this isn't the good silence. This is the silence you get when one of your friends lets slip that he doesn't take a showers.
STO, you have turned into the stinky kid. Please rid yourself of this by making something hard to do with a reward nobody else can get. I know this game is kept alive by players older than Methuselah with the reactions of a hungover sloth who don't like people having stuff they can't pay for but this one isn't really debatable.

Yeah, without PvP, there isn't much to "pay" to "win".
Also, given we can get most of those ships via in-game means.
So, not really all that "p2w".
(meanwhile, there's been two free T6 ships in the past month or two - the KDF Recruit one, and the Anniversary one. Plus this is the beginning of a series of events that will either get you a single uber-rare ship, or two account-wide T6 ship coupons. Plus the Summer & Winter ships... hmm, there'e a bunch of free ships this year.)
Bacon flavored Kelpian!
And now, I'm disappointed.
Even in PVP, how do you win? By being the undisputed best in the world for all time? By going pro and making lots of cash and fame?
If the game gives good experiences, stuff to explore and experiment with, room to improve somehow and apply that beyond the game, etc., then it's worth it.
Otherwise, I do agree, STO is highly limiting, it fails in too many ways in comparison to other MMOs, hence why I don't play it as much as before anymore, but I still enjoy it for what it does offer.
Yea, and the vast majority don't even like running a DPS meter.
I know in some TFO's like Crystalline & Romulan Minefield, they tell only you Placement Results (nobody else finds out) if obtained, yet secretly wished they'd include DPS and/or Healing as well. They also had 1-2 ground battles that did the same. Simply it be nice to evaluate build changes in a few limited scenarios.
The truth is however I agree with Jon, the vast majority engage cause they enjoy Star Trek! The rewards for Elite play is better than Advanced, they award 2x the REP tokens instead of one, and I'm fine with that or it be too much.
What appeals to the vast majority is the Story, Adventure as it continues within the Star Trek Universe, to fly the Ship they love for each Captain.
Seriously, that is the only part of the game that is sort-of P2W, in that cosmetics do cost zen. Even then calling STO P2W is factually incorrect (the best kind of incorrect) since you can grind dil for zen, grind EC to buy things from the exchange, and do the meta event to get gamble box ships like a T6 Constitution or D7.
So take a shower, and the stink you smell might go away
