Why is it that Cryptic announced very short notice of change in server maintainence (Shard) time?

So,

I was logging on to my account a hour ago and I noticed the red message on game launcher, saying that server is down for maintainence. Two hours ahead of planned time.

I was a bit annoyed with that because I was planning to play that event one more before its shutdown (to claim dil reward).

I checked this forum and I saw that Cryptic issued very short notice, annoucing some changes to its maintainence time. Like less than 12 hours' notice.

Isn't it more of common courtsey to give users 1 day notice in advance so that people can finish up their events or DOFFs or something?

Or did I miss out some memo that only Cryptic is allowed to issue a change of notice that is less than 12 hours from its maintainence start time?

In my opinion, they should issue that change of notice on your game launcher so that users can be aware of it while logging on to STO.

Well, there are alot of things that need to be fixed. Perhaps they are going to do more than was listed in the patch notes. One can hope anyways.

Isn't it better to extend the end time rather than moving start time to earlier?

One can hope anyways - I do hope that next time, Cryptic will find it reasonable to issue 24 hours notice of any change on maintainence. Rather than issuing less than 12 hours notice or similar.

Sometimes they encounter things they didn't plan for or something goes haywire and they have to take extra time. it happens from time to time. Usually if it's something unplanned they give short notice for obvious reasons, it wasn't planned. coding and game development can be a major pain in the aft shuttle bay if you catch my drift. if it's something serious they'll let us know.

I understand why. But still, it is annoying that they issue a notice like that especially when the good event's end time is being forward thus curbing one's ability to earn reward.

It is just "moving goal posts away from its intended place" that annoy me. I rather prefer it if they extended the end time instead of moving the start time earlier than planned.

It is like you got a doctor appointment at 1:00pm and you turned up and they told you that appointment is being moved to earlier slot without giving you a reasonable notice. You would be annoyed with that, wouldn't you? You can understand the feeling. :)

I have been playing this game for 10 years. Even from day one. I have always said it is amazing how well the game runs/works, given all the bugs it had and has since day one. Many have been resolved, other have not. Some are game breaking other are not. Given this is a game that has had hundreds upon hundreds of updates and new content endlessly added over time. Errors will pop up. Give them the benefit of the doubt. It is a money making enterprise. They want the game to run as well as it can.

Maintenance details and patch notes for STO are almost always announced the night before (since maintenance is usually on Thursday this typically means Wednesday night). It's been this way for a very long time.

It went down on time at 1pm GMT/UTC, which is an hour before you say you went to log on. The launcher has displayed it was going down at 1pm GMT/UTC all day. It was even announced on social media and on the forums and usually the announcement is between 10pm-1am, as is the norm.

Yesterday/last night, the start time and approximate length of maintenance were posted online (twitter). This was 16 hours in advance of the start time today. Not really short notice, though I wish they posted on their own website as frequently/quickly.

and the server is back up now, an hour earlier than expected, and leaving about 29 more minutes for anyone who wants to squeeze in one more "Best Served Cold" run before that event ends

i understand your points and i rarely come to the aid of cryptic, but earlier or later, what difference really is there? i am in the same boat, and wanted to log in a bit this morning, but as you know, we cant. it doesnt really matter what direction they go, it will impact people no matter. so again, aside from your personal issue, how does earlier or later really matter?

That is respect to the customers, us players... or at least honesty, which lately Cryptic (from 3-4 months) severely lacks.

respect for what though? they had it posted on the launcher. again, i rarely stand up for them in many aspects, but this argument about the times is a no win for the OP and others who didnt read the launcher details...in RED.

as far as the honesty? not sure i follow. they didnt lie when they said it would be down. if you are trying to attach other aspects of post, notices, and the like to this one, then ok, i guess, but regarding this, they didnt lack honesty.

Dear @keepcalmchiveon another empty words, without any proofs. Good job, Tal Shiar will be proud.

To everyone saying that Cryptic is in the wrong here...
    • They ALWAYS post the patch notes the day before said patch.
    • Patch Notes are posted on the STO news page, literally 1-2 clicks away from the forums.
    • No one can see the future, so if its down longer or shorter, it just happens.
    • Since when is the length of maintenance some kind of conspiracy?

So with all due respect, and quite frankly, STOP ATTACKING EACH OTHER FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Nothing was different about this patch than any other in the past. What makes this one so special that people have to go on the offensive over it?

Just... calm down already. Its business as usual around here, and people are acting like they've just been personally attacked by the patch.

I'm honestly getting tired of seeing attacks come up at the drop of a hat. Seeing way too much of it in RL, and seeing way too much of it here on the forums. Why are we now suddenly having to go at each others throats at the slightest HINT of provocation? I swear people are LOOKING for fights these days. Civil discussion seems to be rare as many people seem to jump right to the flamethrowers.

Can we just chill and gear up for the Winter Event please?

Okay we're done here. Folks need to understand a few things. First up it doesn't matter what time of day they do the maintenance, it's going to be an inconvenience to someone depending on time zone. They always announce the down time at least a day in advance with the exception of emergency down time. If they start early, extend it, or so on they always put something out to let people know, even if it is short notice. Sometimes issues come up they didn't anticipate necessitating extra down time and/or an immediate fix. That's just the nature of the beast. None of us like when it happens but it's going to happen from time to time. /closed.
