Possibly the antithesis to what its name suggests, I was thinking about combat, and rp, and immersion in general. And while I know this would be a niche kind of thing, what if there were special vanity shields that actually make your ship looked damaged? There could be a shield for different stages of damage.
I know this has no practical use, I just think it would be cool. When my ship is limping back to ESD, for it to arrive actually looking like it needs repairs.
It's just a thought. Also if you think this idea is stupid, thats fine, i respect that, but lets just keep the thread civil.
Neat idea, even more so if the shield made the visual appear to be venting plasma or gases and or sparking a bit upon zooming in with crinkly hull effects?

And we barely see them. Either you die quickly or heal so fast you are back at full

Not too long ago in the livestreams the devs were talking about eliminating the lasting damage system from the advanced and above ques.
Which would make sense. The game-mechanic "ship damage" is completely superflous and just annoying. You waste inventory space for the repair items which cost a couple of EC and the high-end builds aren't even affected by it. All it does is cluttering up the UI. It's a relic from a time where they probably thought they are going somewhere with it and long overdue to be ripped out of the ame, in my opinion. If we got rid of "crew" we should get rid of "damage" as well, in my opinion.

Nooooooooo! It should be live damage, not this damage on kill rubbish. It's literally 'no consequence' enough as it is. Having damage that actually took 'live' time to repair in mission would greatly add to the game experience (Starfleet Command series). I'd love to see a nacelle departing from a ship and scorch marks on a ship.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

But you are talking about a completely different kind of gameplay in a completely different kind of game. STO is more akin to a hack & slay than it is to a strategic simulation like SFC.

No. That is absurd and not helping the debate at all xD
The ship damage system as it is bestowes minor penalties after death upon you, a penalty that can either instantly be lifted via cheap inventory clutter or after a busywork errand to a station (to which you can also travel instantly). The game doesn't require you to go through campaigns with lasting effects, neither can you strand in deep-space in need of S&R which both are things other games do, but STO doesn't.

When you see them. I have a few characters where this kind of effects glitched and stopped appearing out of nowhere.
I'd be down for this as well.
