When a EV Suit is equipped and you have the EV Suit 2-button tray open, the button to activate the EV Suit is covered by the Thruster button.

    you can access the ev suit controls from the tool list for your tool bar - right side button on your toolbar will bring you up a list you can grab the ev suit controls and drag them to your own toolbar.

    This is being fixed tomorrow in the 9/10 patch. Your method works too.
