Budget choice for lockboxes?

smi3thsmi3th Member Posts: 218 Arc User
Okay, I'm on a budget and can't afford to spend zen for lockbox keys. But I have managed to acquire a small number. But now I want to make sure I don't "waste" them, since they are expensive.

Which lockbox should I use them on? I have most of the old lockboxes and lots of the new ones, and lots of lockboxes can be found on the exchange.

Suggestions?

If you're asking which lockbox to open to get a better chance at getting a ship, You;re luck is going to be the same no matter which box you open. If you want a specific ship, you're best bet is to sell the keys for EC, and buy the ship on the exchange

The odds of getting a T6 ship are 1 in 250 for all of the lock boxes. The Infinity lock box offers a choice of all of the ships except the most recent 1 or 2: https://sto.gamepedia.com/Infinity_Lock_Box

Warning! The ships tokens themselves are not bound, but the choice pack to pick a ship token is bound to character. If you want a Federation, Romulan or KDF ship you should open the lock box using a character from the matching faction. The same goes for the Promo Pack versions of R&D and Duty Officer packs.

That said, the best way to get a specific lock box ship with 100% success and no gambling is to buy it for credits from the exchange.

If you still want to gamble for fun and get some lobi, the Infinity lock box offers the most value unless you want items from the most recent box. You get choice of weapon packs, choice of trait packs, choice of kit frame, choice of other.

Good luck to you.. just remember, you have 1 in 200 chance of winning so don't get your hopes up.

Take it from someone who has opened his fair share of boxes over the years, if you're going into it expecting to drop a ship, you're going to have a bad day. If you want to open some boxes just to open some boxes, then infinity boxes will always be your best bet as they have a large prize pool to pull from. So even if you don't get the item you wanted, you might get something else nice.

If your goal is to acquire a ship from the boxes, then your best bet is to sell the keys and build up a pile of EC. Sometimes I have gone over 200 keys and not pulled a ship, sometimes I've gotten multiple from a 10 pack. Selling the keys is the best way to guarantee you get a ship.

The poor should not be opening lock-boxes. If you'd feel nothing flushing a $20 bill down the toilet, then feel free to open some lockboxes. :D
