It's been several years since I last played, and I'm in the process of re-installing the game again. Will my old characters still be there, or have they gone inactive and been deleted? I'm asking as I had an old maxed federation character with the 5th anniversary ship that I put quite a bit of time into.
I've seen posts from people coming back, and most of them have found their characters waiting for them.
Some people have lost track of what email address they used, and some have had multiple accounts and gotten confused about which account owned what (thinking items had vanished) but more often than not it's just been a matter of logging in.
One thing you might want to do is create a new character like a TOS or Discovery captain so you can re-learn the game while leveling up. Discovery captains get a new tutorial and a couple of episodes while TOS captains get to live in the 23rd century for their first 6? episodes.
If you go with TOS and want to stockpile ground and space gear to level up later, and maybe put a few TOS bridge officers in storage too, you can get to your account bank on the Engineering deck of your ship and use that to transfer some energy credits.
yeah they don't delete people's stuff for not getting used. But if you haven't logged in for 5 years you're gonna be in for a big surprise when you see all the stuff that's changed. re-doing the tutorial might be for the best while you acclimate. also they changed most of the tutorials to be new stuff. You now have 2409 Fed, KDF, Romulan, TOS, Jem'hadar, and Discovery tutorials to choose from.
FYI, if you're looking to buy a Discovery ship the Gagarin is a nice ship with a trait I've found useful for many builds with less tac seating. For cannons it also lets you get CSV 1 using a level 1 power (torpedo spread 1) instead of level 2. - https://sto.gamepedia.com/Gagarin_Miracle_Worker_Battlecruiser

The Gagarin and its alternate skin, the Shepard class, are also some of the better looking of the DSC Fed ships. Some of the others look like they have been hit with an ugly stick (and the Klingon ships generally look like the rest of the tree was dropped on them).

Yeah, the KDF Qugh is definitely "ugh," it looks like they took a rolling pin to a regular KDF ship before baking it. The other one looks like space sausages.

I saw this topic pop up a while back. The official response was that if an account is inactive for a long time, then the characters are moved to a storage area. After you log in for a moment, log out of the game and close it down. That will prompt the system to move the characters back to the active portion of the data server. Log back in after two or three minutes and the characters will be there.
I think they've occasionally done purges of character below 5th level that haven't logged in in over a year; but as long as you don't have a character below that level, you should be GTG.

Hope you enjoy the game.
