Unfortunately STO doesnt have specific "roles" as most MMOs have (the holy trinity, tank, DPS, suport). This alone brings a huge problem as the entire community bends into the easiest/fun (for most) role MMOs have, which is DPS. Today STO is build around DPS, TFO = DPS, Story mode = DPS, PvP = DPS, there is simply no reason to play different in this game. The game concept alone doesnt help bringing diversity, and the gear/ship equippment system isnt different, but I think if a few changes were made in the console system that could help bring in some diversity to ship builds.
Funny that, I do not go pure dps and strongly disagree with forcing the trinity back into the game. Holy Trinity always leads to waiting around for hours of my often less than 5 houra of freetime a day and not getting to enjoy the game at all.
In fact. I often feel there is more elitism with the trinity. I remember all to well guild wars 1 and getting narcissists playing monks and necromancers in predefined location based builds that were often considered the 'only' way through missions. It wasnt a fun experience. Id not even be into sto if it still had the trinity. Id consider it another wow or guild wars clone and moved on. Star Trek in name only.(bad enough its combat only but making every situation the same with holy trinity would be even more repetitive).
Also top dps is not actually that easy. Many people struggle to really achieve those record high numbers and ita not just build. There are whole guides on it.
As for support, it exists in for the form of cc, buffs and debuffs. In fact, many top dps runs have someone running debuffs and some tac skills are debuffs. Support isnt just healing.
Thinking of ideas from lots of games for, dunno how long now.
the only way the clicky consoles will become relevant is if you get rid of or severely curtail stuff like the vunerability locators you can put in any console slot. IMHO if you put more than one of any kind of a console on a ship the bonus should be severely curtailed. if you put 2 console X on and they both have 35% bonus to phaser, then the first one would be the 35% ther second be reduced to say, 10%. that would 1. reduse the megadps 2. reduce powercreep 3. may other consoles and builds more attractive and viable
I think they tried, actually, with the Command ships: a full set of all 3 consoles would give you very good bonuses. And the consoles themselves were pretty useful too, But having to slot 3, at almost any time, is too much (not to mention, requires you to buy 3 ships). And having them be ship-bound didn't exactly help either.

Yes, that is one of the biggest problems I pointed out. As you mentioned, it takes a lot investment for some sets, some require multiple ships, and then the consoles are restricted to these ships alone. Its a lot resources, lots of console slots, for 2 minutes long cooldowns bound to a single ship or ship family.
I cant see how this is fun, I personaly wanna have more freedom building the ships I enjoy flying with consoles I find fun. I also suspect more players would feel interested buying Zen ships, even outdated ones, just to grab their consoles. How can this be bad? Its not like most click consoles are required for those ridiculously high DPS break the game. They wont break the game more than its already currently broken...
Most consoles have far too long of a cooldown. Like the vast majority of consoles need to have their cooldown reduced to 1 minute. It would make them all so much more useful, and might encourage build diversity instead of what we have now.

That is EXACTLY my point. People dont feel encouraged making different builds due to console limitations, T6 ship click consoles have a long cooldown or are strict to a few ships only. Its much easier simply stack passive damage/power boost consoles and Fire-at-Will everything.
But I feel if consoles were made more accessible and had different cooldowns (based on their usability) things could different, many players could would feel motivated to drop some DPS for versatility or unique playstyles. Lets be honest here, there is so much DPS in this game most players coud live with half the DPS they have got.
There are a silly amount of console restrictions. Most T6 ships are restricted to ship type, sadly. The ships in the Gamma pack are a notable exception, and Romulan ships have a lot of console sets across their ship lines they can play with. It is fun building Romulan ships for that reason, if you have a number of those console sets available to you.
Some are obvious to be ship restricted, like the Scimitar thalaron set, and various ship separation consoles. Most consoles could be opened up to any ship. You do have to be careful with CDs, though. As I mentioned before, the new trait that lowers console CDs can be pretty powerful with some consoles. The one size fits all approach to CD is not a good one and could stand to be changed.

Yea. Two Thumbs up to this!
Just because I'm an engineer, does not mean I want to take 3-5x longer to defeat enemy, especially while taking 2-7x more damage.
