Bringing the House Down - Root of the Problem

During the stage Root of the Problem in Bringing the House Down, the task investigate the surveyor area is impossible to complete, because the surveyor equipment is not accessible. One of the BOFFs always mentions that the equipment is right there, and I've looked at screenshot after screenshot to make sure I'm in the right place. I hear a mechanical noise coming from one of the trees, though, so I think that the object spawned inside of it or up in the branches--I noticed a few farmers were up in the leaves of their crops, too.
I've tried logging out and back in. I've tried dropping the quest, logging out, and logging back in. I've tried exiting the program. None of the typical tricks have worked, which sucks because it's an important story mission.
