I read the news post about the making available to all levels of player, the tier 6 ships & it mentioned about breaking down barriers, but this is the wrong barrier to break down. There is one barrier in this brilliant game, (looking past all the spelling & grammar mistakes that never get fixed), & this barrier is the Mount Eiger of a Berlin wall style barrier, which is that of the Fleet system.
The Fleet system is prejudiced. There are those of us in society who, due to various reasons, are not comfortable doing things in public, crowds or groups of strangers & we can't change that just because the 'characters' in the game aren't real, because there are real people behind them. I am talking about those with Aspergers, other Autistic Spectrum issues, & those with Social Anxiety. With people we know we are fine, or others like us, but with strangers not so much. Playing the game is fine when it's only PvE, & the slight elitism of spending real money for Zen stuff isn't so bad, but the Fleet system is biased to playing with strangers in PvP outside of completing the projects. So unless someone with these conditions knows enough others like them that aren't family, or we spend a lifetime with our own characters to finish the projects, the Fleet system is completely unobtainable.

Neither is anything through PvE required for building fleet projects.
There MIGHT be some accolades, but that would be about it.

Nope, all of the fleet gear is earned just by earning fleet credits, then spending the credits and dil.
You can earn fleet credits just by contributing dil to fleet projects if you want. For some projects you can also contribute fleet marks or white-quality duty officers. Projects always need dil more than anything else, so if you have dil, you can earn fleet credits.
Step-by-step:
- Look for a "casual" fleet that does not demand any group activities, then ask for an invitation
- Contribute some dil, then ask to be promoted to a level where you are allowed to buy fleet gear
- Contribute more dil and if you can some marks and duty officers, to earn more fleet credits
- Buy some gear
- Be happy!
A good fleet will NOT demand that you pay in X dil per week, or X% of your dil income.
Many fleets will ask you to contribute some reasonable amount of dil (10,000? more?) before promoting you, because all the fleet gear that you buy costs the fleet "provisions" that must be stocked by completing projects. (Some of the same projects that you will be contributing dil to complete.)
While some Fleets make it an absolute requirement that you be active in chat etc, and contribute at least X amount per week/month etc, not all are that way. UFP and a number of others don't ask you for anything at all other than being a member. I'm also in other Fleets where I have never "talked" to anyone in the Fleet since first invited and I've been a member for a few years now. Heck, I'm a senior Officer in one of them (contribution based promotions there) and the only "conversation" I have had with anyone in that Fleet in the two years I've been a member consisted of "Thanks for the invite".
There is absolutely no drawback to joining a Fleet, as long as you find one that fits your gaming style.
Fleet gear isn't a requirement for anything in the game, any how, well other than DPS builds. So, this isn't a wall, it's a trap.
In my opinion, fleet do erect a wall. An anti-social wall of forming cliques. They actually segregate the player base into small gatherings, much like a church would. Which, in turn, hurts the social aspect of any MMO.
But there are some out there, that you can use for that. There's a couple I know that, as long as you have the fleet creds, they'll generally just let you buy the gear, and not even ask for anything. This is how I got almost all the fleet outfits.
Also if the fleet if active/large enough you can get a reliable group for PvE group activities like TFOs. As for PvP unless you're in a PvP focused fleet you won't have to do it if you don't want to, I can't even remember when I did serious PvP the last time.
As for is it worth, only you can say it, different people value different things and I can't speak for you in this matter.
Your analogy is utterly wrong. Fleets are not based in ANY PvP orientation. Find a fleet that promotes casual play like mine. And personally, I take exception that you've gone out of your way to try and prove the game discriminates. It does not.
And I take exception that you've seemingly gone out of your way to be unnecessarily harsh towards someone who had an innocent misunderstanding of how the Fleet System works and self-confessed social anxiety. Perhaps less criticism and more understanding, or else don't say anything at all.

I'm a solo player normally, mainly because I have certain social issues that make it awkward and uncomfortable playing in group situations and I hate PVP in all games (mainly because I'm TRIBBLE at it to be honest!).

Thank you for this. I'll perhaps have a look at some of the Klingon fleets and see what they're like. Have a great day :)
And yet, having clinical depression and anxiety myself (that's Mirtazipine and Amitryptiline that I use to treat and I'll email you the prescription if you want), I can distinguish between a genuine complaint and one that is a broad swipe at the game just from the language used alone. This person isn't speaking for 'us'. I actively promote my fleet as a casual fleet in-game and I've never experienced the 'elitism' in fleets I was/am in. I've met plenty of people in-game that have similar issues and the last thing we do is shout about it. There's alot of consideration by the Devs to allow for as much or as little interaction as we want and I gave a just opinion.
This could be misconstrued as a biased view on itself. What does a fleet system has anything to do with Tier 6 ships? This is an MMO not an experiment of human social behavior or a Psych 101 class. PWE is not a political entity nor the current global moral police of the world. STO is a gaming community made of of diverse points of view that find a common in the Trek genera of MMOs. Just go around the corner and check ANY other MMOS to see if they are "policing" the man made barriers you are talking about. One does not find perfection in an MMO. On the contrary there is a lot of imperfection in this virtual world and that is why many of us come her to escape reality.
Like others have said nobody is forcing anyone to be "social" and belong to a guild/fleet/team. One is FREE to choose what one wants. That's the beauty of social play and why I love human interactions. The great, the bad and the ugly. Goodluck OP!
Original STO beta tester.
Fair warning: that approach means grinding (or buying with cash monies) hundreds of millions in refined dilithium to level up the fleet holdings, plus more hundreds of millions of energy credits for white-quality duty officers. With the time gates on fleet projects it also takes months to years.
For most people, joining an established fleet is much less work.
We're not going to get into epeening illnesses now. You're right, this person wasn't speaking for you. They were speaking for themself. You're the one who decided to make it about you. Just because you've never experienced a certain thing doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. This person came here with a concern seeking help. You gave criticism instead.
OP, I'm sorry that your thread has taken an ugly turn. I hope that you find what you're looking for. Now before this gets any worse... /Thread
