Account server down? [12/20/18]

"Unable to Connect to Account Server" on launcher. So what's up?
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Seems localized as I could just log in just fine and had no lag in choosing characters what so ever.

EDIT:What ever the issue is it cannot be cryptics servers as I wouldn't have been able to log in, however it doesn't mean there isn't things like IP ban for a certain area that is giving the time-out error, either way the servers are up.

So the question we(and Cryptic for that matter) should be asking why some people are unable to connect to the servers and some are? What's the common thread here?

Tried logging and failed, so changed proxy to US and it was slow. Changed to EU and improved slightly enough to be able to get my Phoenix box. Tried swapping by logging out and entering account for secondary account and couldnt log in due to 'too many attempts' after the first attempt! Launching launcher from scratch was fine though. Long story short you may need to set a proxy server in options.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles

This caught the attention of one of the other mods who passed it over to me since I'm typically the bugs guy out of the crew. Normally we don't permit bug reports in the GenDisc, but this is a bit different so it's cool at the moment. Need a few bits of info from you guys so I can try to spot any commonalities and such. First off, when it craps for you guys does it give any kind of error or anything at all? If so I need that error ticket ID and tracking number. To get the ticket ID it's the first thing you see in the error box. To get the tracking number pull up the cryptic error thing in your system tray and get me that number. That's for those of you that get a cryptic error.

Need a few things from you guys to eliminate some of the usual culprits. Post up your computer specs below if you know them. If you need help getting those I can try to walk you through it via PM. This is to eliminate possible tech issues with your machines.

Secondly post up your internet service provider and the Country you're playing from. Such as in my case it would be Spectrum as the ISP and USA as country. This will help determine if it's a possible issue with certain ISPs.

Pretty much like rushifell said. you log into the launcher (which goes very slow), the progress bar on the lower left just says:
"Unable to connect to account server (3)" And just sits there. There was no error box for me.

I was on earlier 1130am CST and it was fine.
Then later (when I made this discussion) was the issue.
Then I tried again at 2:18pm CST and it was back to normal.
    ISP is Spectrum, in Texas.
PC specs should be irrelevant since its not a client side issue or else it'd be happening to me all the time.

Things like this can be hard to diagnose. For me when this happens, usually it's an IP conflict between this Laptop and my Mobile, and that occurs usually when I've come home without turning off my phone's wifi, and it happens regardless of the router I had at the time. In a home that has many wifi devices, this would be a mare to monitor, so usually a router reset will also resolve it.

The ISP is usually the next most common cause. In the UK, generally most ISP's are pretty stable, of which I have barely had a problem with mine, which is when people mention things like this or lag leaves me bemused that people automatically blame the server, as I'll be happily plodding along with no issue. As a side note, I don't use any of the Proxy servers, connecting directly to the US-side server without barely an issue.

Alot of people also mistake their 'speed' for quality of connection too. Speedtest sites are not an accurate indicator of line speed, as traffic can be and is usually funnelled by ISP's, and data is uniformed packets (as far as I remember), nothing like what we have for gaming/streaming. My laptop reports lower speeds than my Mobile does despite them being on the same WiFi network!! It's better to check Router Diagnostics screen to see what bandwidth your ISP is giving you (just because you bought '50Mb/s' does not mean you get it, and unless you're right next to the exchange, it will always be less. In that screen you should be able to view 'Near-End/Far-End CRC errors' on the line, which indicates what data is actually getting through and the quality of your line. The lower number the better. Near-End errors indicate issues coming from the ISP, Far-End indicate a problem at your end. If this number is in the thousands, you could have a big problem.

Granted here we're seeing multiple people having issues at the same time, so it's doutbful that their hardware is causing the issue.

That said it still could be an issue outside Cryptic control and certainly isn't the physical servers as I tried logging after I saw this thread the first time and had no issues. Sadly "change your ISP" might not be possible for Cryptic if that's the one causing issues as ISP can have regional monopolies at least in practice in USA.

We've had issues in the past with Cryptic's ISP. Next to unnecessary blame throwing at the Devs and Server Hamster Death, blaming Cryptic's ISP is pretty popular. Or at least it was for a while.

The above said with all the Issues Cogent HAS had (and there have been lots and stretches of weeks/months where Cogent IS the issue) - you'd think they'd look for a better competitor. <--- That decision not to IS on Cryptic.
