Carrier command specialization

sophlogimosophlogimo Member Posts: 6,507 Arc User
As a tangent off the other carrier thread: Let's collect ideas about a carrier specialization. That is, both for captains to put specialization points in them, and for ships to have boff seats with it.

As a captain specialization, i believe things like these would make sense:
  • Attacking a target with carrier weapons makes them slightly more vulnerable to the fighters
  • Attacking a target with fighters makes it slightly more vulnerable to the carrier's weapons
  • Once every X time, when all fighers of a hangar are destroyed, immediately reset the hangar's cooldown.
  • When recalling fighters, they land immediately when reaching the carrier's vicinity, without any wait period.
  • Fighters become invulnerable for the first X seconds after launch
  • Accuracy bonus for the carrier vs enemy fighters.

For bridge officer powers, I can see some like these:
  • The ability to upgrade one selected fighter to "ace" status, sort of like a six-star levelled unit.
  • Heal for all your fighters
  • Attack Pattern Phi: Damage buff for fighters
  • A buff that allows fighters to ignore the target's shields for a time ("flying under the shields")
  • A buff that allows the carrier to extend its shields around its fighters if they are within 3 km or so.

These are obviously just space-centered ideas, but the carrier specialization could also benefit Security Escort, Support Drone, constructs and combat pets on the ground.

What would be your ideas for a carrier command specialization?

Working Pet AI might help too.
    Sometimes they don't follow orders.

    Yep, we need these first:
    - working pet AI
    - pet impulse engines that match your own speed instead of being white mark X

Yes the ideas may be good but they need to implement an AI as efficient as the JH wingmen at least

Remove the subsystem targetting from the carrier and make it pet commands, even if it was a basic strafe target from fore, aft, port & starboard.

First thing first; a proper functional code for ALL fighters and frigates. As a Jemmie Vanguard carrier captian, i've been spoiled by the pure awesomeness it brings! Bring that package to all other carriers and flight-deck cruisers + - wingmen, and i will be a happy STO player by just that!

This Carrier Command is something i'd love to see as well. I've always been a pet person in mmorpgs. Maybe it's because i am just too darn bad at doing dps myself, but, i do enjoy the supportrole and micromanagement of pets & watching pets help me, and collecting various pets as well. Which brings me to; why are most pets locked to a single ship? At least unlock them for each faction and/or relative to what the size of the ship you're using? Maybe that is too much though? I mean, frigates are fairly large compared to a small fighter.

Bring on the Carrier Command specialization. The more the marrier.. and more gametime played to ge those bloody spec points!

Wingmen are specifically for Vanguard ships though.
Right now I'd just be happy if the normal hanger pets always listened to commands.

I can live without the wingmen, sure. They are sweet though. If the regular pets worked properly, i'd be fine with that.
But, dude, those wingmen... :) Guess i'll be stuck in this glorious stardestoyer for life.

    Edit:
I actually see no more need to get a new cstore ship, as i am so happy with these fully functional Jem'Hadar ships.
I had plans earlier to get more ships with hangarpets, but as most are worthless, i now decided to stop buy.

Edit2: My last ship i bough was at the last cstore discount (not the current one) when i got the Cardassian Science dreadnought. I also got the Sovereign cruiser for another reason. But, i did get the Cardie one to have another ship with hangar.
Aaaaand what a disappointment it was. :( Jukawa or what the F they are called vanished behind me when i full impulsed in to a group of targets. Hurray!

    Good job! /sigh

Many of these things are already in the game, just under different names/guises. The Obelisk Space set for instance has the buff that applies to your pets a "weaker" version of certain BoFF abilities. Then there is the "level" ability you can choose after putting x amount of points into Tac/Sci/Eng. And finally the buff's in the Tac tech tree as well. So a new "specialization" doesn't seem too much to ask.

Adding (and also 'retrofitting') an actual 'Air Boss' BoFF/DoFF slot to full Carriers (and maybe FDC's as well) could also be implemented (which we've seen can be done, as with Sci ships and Escorts) So that you can slot Rep/Mission/DoFFing reward/Fleet Holding "special" officers with different buff's/passives that could also carry some of these abilities.

So you could have a Vulcan "Pilot Trainer" who's logical nature means he teaches hangar pet "pilots" to use "weaker" versions of certain abilities, or a Bajoran "Militia Logician" who significantly speeds up the launch of 'fighter' class craft, but makes 'frigate' class pets launch slower ... etc.

But in the end, you will not be able to get as much out of your carrier pets as even a moderately pumped up escort, science ship or even cruiser build will get out of its weapons, that's what I mean. :)

Nor should you, as they are small craft. I mean yea in Wing Commander heavy fighters and bombers are ship killers, but medium, space superiority, and interceptors aren't.

That depends on what you're launching.

Engines wouldn't be to huge of a problem if they actually followed commands...or at least followed you at full impulse all the time.

The Cardi Yukawa Frigates are somewhat notorious for not keeping up after being deployed.

I typically recall fighters before I move...problem is some or all of them typically ignore the recall and just hover around me and relax like I give the order to take a breather instead of return to hangar.

I'd like a boff specialty- air crew.. maye an expansion of pilot ability. maybe an APA, ST1, 2 ET 1,2 that effects all fighters within 5 KM they could be slotted in universal officer slots

Was just now thinking almost the exact same thing. How about fitting/retrofitting Carriers with a new Deck Officer/*** seat? Sci Carriers could get Sci/DO seat etc. and maybe have full Carriers (i.e 2 hangar bays) have 2 ***/DO seats and FDC's and the like (i.e ships with only 1 hangar bay) get 1 ***/DO seat.

The nyou could optionally have an Eng/DO BoFF and use a "pet version" of EPtS or DEM or a Tac/DO and slot a pet version of BFaW or TT/TS ...

A lot of these things are already in game ... on Dil store/Fleet store pets, but it'd be nice to have a more codified and carrier specific option.

And as someone has already suggested, the Specialization could also be made to include "ground" pets and constructs, even the summonable short duration allies.
