Strange though, I know, and rather a minor one, but what would the feasibility be of giving TMP-era Constitution Class ships a warp-out effect similar to the one from the actual film?
Not just every movie even within a series there were changes to them (sudtle changes sure but still) and each series had its own version of the warp effects.
Funny thing about WoK... the warp effects actually changed in movie as well. The shot I provided was from early.
This is from near the end of the movie.
Looks a bit more like what we'd see later in ST5/6.
Actually, the perspective makes it look different, but it's the same.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
I was thinking TMP because it was so unique. The slit-screen prismatic "rainbow lines" didn't appear anywhere else, but they worked their way into my heart and stuck there.
The warp effects got simpler and simpler as the movies went on. TWOK occasionally used a TMP shot or two without the rainbows, but by SFS it looked like they were just drawing pre-vapor trails over the whole ship.
The current STO warp effects really aren't THAT far off from the later TOS films, but I would love to see a TMP warp on my Constitution refit, rainbows and all.
Actually I think the warp effects are supposed to be more like those in the TNG era. We do have two sets that are different though. The Kelvin ships have unique warp out animations like that seen in Into Darkness, combined with a round flash unlike the more diamond shaped one common in TNG. The other, is TOS characters have no warp trail or warp flash, ala TOS.
The problem here is that your warp drive effects are tied to the characters for the most part, like the transporter effects. I'm no expert but it seems like it might be too much work for the reward to give some ships the ability to choose unique warp effects.
to date I know of only 2 cases where it was done the kelvin timeline ships and the Crossfield-class (it has a unique "engage transwarp" effect).
I'd not object to TMP warp out effects. I enjoy how dramatic that is. With that rubber band SNAP! at the end.
As far as sector space goes I'm actually happy the way it is. The streaks from the impulse engines offer a nice contrast toward the ambience or warp travel.

Gets my vote at least.
Devs...make it so!
