There is the 8k limit for everyone. You do 1k per 2 days if you are LTS or a grandfathered monthly sub and fleet holding can do 1k per 2 days. That is all. This is for the health of the game. If you have that much built on one toon, start a new one so you can refine twice as much once you get a stockpile on that one.

It's the Fleet Dil Mine that allows 500 extra per day.

I hope they never.. ever.. raise the refinement cap.

I honestly feel it would be one of the absolute worst things that can possibly be done to the in game economy.

I recommend getting multiple characters and use the dilithium exchange to swap dilithium around among your toons as needed.

I have over 4 million unrefined ore.

100k or ore is a "problem" that gets resolved in less than two weeks.

Unrefined ore reserves are good! Means you don't have to worry about grinding dil every day.

The refinement limit is put in place to keep dilithium from flooding the markets in part. It also keeps someone from coming in and grinding their way into owning the entire cstore and a near infinite lobi supply in the first week if there were no refining limit. Obviously you're not saying it should be outright removed but was simply making the point. If there was no limit or the limit were raised beyond 8k per toon, then that would inject additional supply into the market thus driving the cost of zen up. The last thing any of us need or want is for it to hit 450+ per zen again. You can refine 8k dilithium per toon per day and move that dilithium between your toons. plus ore reserves so you don't have to farm your tail feathers off is nice.

Oh, I don't know about that. I have a lot of zen saved up. Personally, I would welcome a spike in zen value, but I understand I might be in the minority on that. But you do make a good point with your post.

Now if I'm selling heck yeah I would love it to be at 500 dilithium per zen cause reasons. However in the long run that large of a spike would be a negative impact for the game and would cause people to sit on their dilithium until the price came back down. The market as a whole depends on people willing to part with their dilithium and their zen in order to function. If it were to spike that high people would horde their dilithium because they won't want to give all of it up for what they would view as a minuscule amount of zen. Ideally zen will stay in a butter zone of sorts. Low enough so that people with dilithium will buy zen, and high enough so people with zen will feel like they're getting a fair amount of dilithium. Hope that sums it up a little better.

Take a look at neverwinter! The gem refining cap is much higher and combined with other factors has pretty much killed the zen exchange which has been at the max level for as long as I can recall with pretty much zero movement. Last I checked was during the anniversary zen promo and the requests to purchase were well into the six digit numbers.

Compare that to STO where the game has a fairly healthy exchange that ebbs and flows by what events are happening, mostly phoenix with wobbles during ship sales and double zen things.

Also be thankful that its one of the few aspects that hasn't been poked and prodded until it breaks as is the habit for other facets of the game.

Yea, divide and conquer if you are having dil cap issues:
    - Create some characters, level them to 11 and get some basic doffs on them, then use the doff system to farm both dil and xp
    - Once they get to 52 the admiralty system unlocks. Put accountwide unlocks on your alts and farm dil from admiralty. If you've got a number of ships, it shouldn't be too hard to get 6k/day on average, especially with both the Ferengi and Klingon tours both giving 30k. Keep an eye for missions with dil bonuses and extras. If you go this route, consider investing in ship packs that have accountwide unlocks so you can get them on all your farming toons.
    - Get a Klingon alt and do some marauding (piracy DOFF missions). Won't go into details too far, since there are tutorials on that, but a single Klingon (or Rom/Dom Klingon aligned) alt can generate enough contraband for 5 alts parked at ESD for the "turn in contraband" mission. That's 2K Dil/day taken care of. If you go this route, consider buying the account bank unlock since it'll make it a whole lot easier.

This can get a bit grind-y, but you'll basically be able to get 8k refined * number of chars on account this way.

Instead of buying the account bank unlock you're better off getting the elite starter pack which costs less than what would be a double purchase of the account slots it includes.

+1 to buying the Elite Starter Pack! It's worth every zen!
Now a LTS and loving it.

Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

What's the best way to transfer dil between characters? What I do is go into the dil exchange, put up an offer to buy zen, & then quickly withdraw the offer. I just want to know if there is a better/easier way.

That's pretty much THE way to do it, make sure you're offering 25 dil per zen to ensure there aren't any mishaps and you end up with the zen and yeah then quickly cancel the order and withdraw on whatever toon, there is no other way of doing it.

I've often thought they might raise the cap for daily refining, because there's a lot more we need to spend dilithium ON now. But, I do see the point of those against it.
Once, I was simply called Mojo. Now, I'm forced into a new name, but don't be fooled, I'm the original STO Mojo!

This game needs detailed crafting, exploration and interaction systems.

Yeah it's important to understand that raising the refinement cap from 8,000 to say 16,000 means an instant jump on the dil/zen exchange from 250 dil per zen to 500 dil per zen.

For those that do not buy zen with dilithium, it doesn't really matter but for those that do buy zen, it doesn't help them one bit. In fact, it hurts them.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

in NW 100k is the daily refinement cap. Just look at their zen exchange for the results.

why quick cancel?! no body will buy at 25 p z and even if someone buys ,it will be good for the seller ..
  • postagepaidpostagepaid Member Posts: 2,846 Arc User
At 25 there's no real need to quick cancel, who knows you might managed to blag some zen from someone half asleep who fat fingers the exchange.

I tend to stack up the exchange at the amount I aim to buy zen for during a phoenix event. If I need dil for anything I'll cancel, use what I need and redo the offer. Chances of the exchange suddenly dipping by around 50 per zen is very slim.

Works for me as I never buy store stuff outside sales and tend to avoid it entirely because cryptic seem insistent on the thinking that 12 hours is a suitable timeframe for flash sales in a game with a global playerbase.

Huh, back when I played NW, it was 24k. But yeah, the economy over there was a disaster. Of course, there were multiple contributing factors:
    - the auction using Refined diamonds (so the folks who rushed to endgame and exploited dungeons for the Best Gear could sell it for All The Diamonds),
    - the Founder's Packs giving a pile o' refined diamonds to purchasers,
    - the crafting system using diamonds to speed up production (like Research here), so that - again - the first folks to dump a pile of $ into rushing it cornered the crafting market and got to sell high-end crafted stuff for a premium on the auction
    - Etc, etc, etc

I remember the weeks of the zen exchange being pegged at 500, with an empty list of offers. You put up a diamond sale, and it would take 3 days to get results from it. Of course, it's been years since I played.

edit: but yeah, upping Dil refinement would be Bad™ ;)
