I heard about and was excited for Star Trek Online before it was released, but seeing it was pay to play, I just ignored it, till 2014 when someone mentioned it was free to play for a while now.
Got hooked trying to acquire the Odyssey, farming dilithium during 150D/zen days doing foundry dailies, mining, created the first alt to refine faster, got the Odyssey, Avenger, fleet Avenger, Vestas, fleet Atrox, then Delta Rising pack, and so on.
Started playing with 2 other friends, but they abandoned it instantly, used to play it exclusively like mad, but still enjoy the ships, artwork, and some game play, but I moved on to other games since I'm a PVPer since the days of dial-up.
I got curious as to how long players have been around, I'm expecting the results of this to be very interesting. For me it was when the game became FTP back in 2012. I included the N/A option in case there were forum members who for some reason haven't actually started playing.
Can't truthfully answer that poll as I started in October 2009 (During the Closed Beta phase).

Can recall my very first "super expensive" exchange purchase for 4M EC saved up via in-game drops. Went LTS in 2012. Haven't taken a break yet surprisingly. Have been a Star Trek fan since about 1967
Day One Collector's Edition. I still remember crafting the Delta Flyer. I have sold many of them. I remember playing PvP back when it was fresh and new and basically everyone was on the same level.
Or it might have possibly been the day after, accounting for patching and all the server madness had died down a bit.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I began playing Star Trek Online when it became F2P. I played the old tutorial and did not play the KDF until they revamped their tutorial and had proper leveling from lvl 1 to lv50, the max level during that time. Then, I played a Romulan during Legacy of Romulus. During that time I did not have as many crashes, since then I am amazed to have at least one day without crashes. I did not get the free Odyssey since I showed up after that event was over because I was intimidated by the game but seeing Let's Plays of it by Brent Justice as well as J2JonJeremy and praskieva got me finally into it. Originally played through a USB and then the family got a better computer and played from it with no USB. Been a Star Trek fan since a family called Vanderzwags (sp?) gave away a lot of Star Trek videos of Voyager (at least one and maybe more), The Next Generation (the majority of them), and Deep Space Nine (the second most), and watched reruns of TOS on SciFi (before the Syfy nonsense) and saw Enterprise's premiere episode as well as the rest of the series and was so excited for Star Trek to be on television where I could finally see since I was not able to see it overseas at that time. During that period of time, there was a lot of science fiction on TV as well as action TV shows like Relic Hunter, Beastmaster, etc some I did not see until later on the Internet which was the case of Relic Hunter. Since then, while some people are dropping out of playing STO, I am playing casually and play Star Trek Online more as well as Star Trek: Alien Domain. My first character was a tac called Pearl Bailey (a man with that type of name from a now shelved idea at the time of Star Trek: Hollow Earth, I still have a video of that concept for a webpage design class I took, which is obsolete now). Live long and prosper.
Would have to check the exact date, but seem to recall one of the earliest things I did on STO was the 25th Anniversary TNG event (think that was that talking to first season Worf in the Academy holodeck for the warrior sash and something else?).
Anyway, six years later I'm still blundering on with that particular character..
Hello new player and new Trekkie in general. Had the game on PS4 played a bit last year or so, deleted it and now reintstalled it. Just hit lv. 11 on my starfleet toon, and testing out a klingon and romulan.
May 26th, 2013, right at the time Legacy of Romulus was released. I got the LoR Pack and the Steam Starter Bundle on sale through Steam. Within a week I purchased a Lifetime Sub which was also on sale.

August 18 2011, Me and a bunch of guys from another game got fed up over there, then They announced STO going F2P. We started making plans to move over here. We formed Nova Elite, then we never looked back.
I am not ashamed that I started playing the game in 2015 since that's the year I first got into Trek in general. While I was watching Voyager I started to wonder if there was any Star Trek MMO and did a google search for one.
I started when it was released, but was severely disappointed with it and didn’t come back until 2016.
What disappointed me was the pay to play/win aspect of the game. It actually pissed me off quite a bit. Still does today, especially with the R&D/Lockboxes, but I’m easily able to afford to throw some money away every now and then.

I have a family, work 12hr shifts and don’t want to live in STO getting things for free. More power to you. Besides, the time you spend in STO is time you’ll never get back. Not exactly free.
Should it be a concern that three-quarters of those responding said they joined 2012 or before, and 90% joined before 2015? It could be good if that means STO is holding its players, but if it pretty much can't attract new players ...
Someone I know IRL pointed the game out to me way back when and I started to get involved then got bored and dropped out for a year or so. Am getting bored again so will likely drop out again before Christmas - sooner if they drop too much TRIBBLE stuff on us.
Looking at the results of the poll as it currently stands one possible interpretation is that newer players don't use the forums as much. Player retention was brought up by somebody in a recent thread here though, as well as on Reddit and Twitter.
