I know this has been brought up a few times, but why won't STO give us mastery account wide on ships.... I just got the Gamma pack, and recently the 31 century pack. That is a total of 12 new ships ( 4 cardassian, 5 jem'hadar, and 3 Temporal) I have 8 Toons. Making a total of 92 masteries to unlock if I want all traits on all toons. As well as the 30+ ships for my new jem'hadar I've collected over the years.. I never play new content cause I am usually leveling up ships. And if I adopt a "Just play the ships will level" I'll be done tons of content without ever even having my ships fully realized.
Not even talking cross faction.. I get a pack of 3 romulan ships, I have 5 romulans... 15 Times I have to unlock ships for all 5? Why? It isn't a cash grab cause me regrinding the same ship makes them no extra money. It only adds grind.
Anyone else kinda.. Bummed to play when new ships come out?
Can I get a Dev just to give me the reason they do this?
If you agree make sure to comment it, so we can get this issue some attention.
I usually make a character because a new ship that I want came out. And I usually plan a specific set for it and level up only the ship mastery that are usefull. Yes it is bothersome but you don'T need to level up everything everytime.
Some of us are a little more organic, if you wanna play out and build specifically that a valid play style too, but If I decide one day I wanna try an all turret build with my engineer, and find I have to get withering barrage first from my escorts, I gotta grind that, then I find that the trait would be better suited to my science toon build, now I have to regrind it again. All to discover.. eh, turret build isn't that good.
I'd just be switching out my grinding all toons, all the time, for grinding a planning tool
I have complained about it before. Grinding Ship mastery for hours on every toon on top of all the gear change and re-maping skill bar seems like the best excuse to never buy or ready a new ship.
I made two new characters for the Victory Is Life update and the major disappointment is that I've got to grind to T5 on three ships every time I make a new character:
This irritates me because it keeps me from using my favorite/designated main ship for that character until I've finished levelling up all of these to Tier 5.
So I think Ship Traits definitely should become an account wide unlock.
That when one character does it, the Trait is unlocked for all the characters.

I like to think of my toons as individuals. Ship mastery is just that. A Captain has "flown" a specific ship so much that they know everything there is to know about it, they have "mastered" that ship. That experience, that can only be gained from actually flying that ship, will always be with them, so even after taking command of a different ship, it is still with them.
However, it was Captain Ariotex that spent all that time flying that ship, Captain Lanari has never even been on the bridge of that ship so why would she be expected to have that ship ship mastery already ? It makes perfect sense to me from a game/role playing standpoint. Really no different than actually having to level a toon even though you already have one or more at max level.
On Cryptics end, well, they need the metrics and requiring people to actually fly the ship for x amount for any every toon they want that mastery for means more people on line playing for longer periods of time.
Maybe get them to trade metrics for money and make ship mastery a zen unlock for subsequent toons after the first ?
From my perspective, the appeal of a repetitive task diminishes with each successive character until it's just a tedious chore to get out of the way as soon as possible.
For example, this is the sixth time I've had to level up these ships and I'm bored with it now.
Also, as two of them are escorts and I really don't like that kind of ship due to their low durability, it's bothersome.
The Chimesh's speciality seems to be exploding a lot.
Also, it's not actually adding more metrics, because I'm still playing the same amount of time I would, just in a ship that isn't my designated main ship.
And because it's an uninteresting task, I refuse to do it for other ships that aren't strictly necessary to enhance my build, reducing the metric time involved.

I got Gamma Vanguard Pack... And rly 60k (from 5lvl to 6lvl) to unlock ship is ridiculous. I have 2 mains and 8 allts, and after unlocking JHV ships for account i have to grind them all AGAIN (+ Cardassians ships) for for each of my mains... and some of new ships for all alts...
Now i really regret... I want to enjoy new ships but instead i grinding Argala 4/5 like madman again and again and again...
This is a last ships purchase for me, until Cryptic make Starship Mastery + Traits ACCOUNT-WIDE UNLOCK.
P/S. When u unlock JHV ships for account and take it on other 2ns, they also have 5lvl to 6lvl mastery to unlock.. So if u whant fully mastered ship for ur main u need to grind 6lvl 60k exp AGAIN... lol.
I agree and while i understand cryptic is in the make money game maybe allow us to unlock a mastery account wide for say 100Zen or 50 to 100k Dil.
Its bad enough i have to unpack and discharge 20 ships for the Admiralty but having to grind master's on every ship even if i reduce the number by only the mastery's i want it's still is a pain and nothing but a grind i have done 10 times already on certain ships. heck put the mastery's we have unlocked in the dil store as reclaims and allow us to pay dil or zen to claim the on a character by character bases.

If the Vanguard ships have already been unlocked account wide, then the 6th level is not necessary to reach, since the only purpose of that mastery was to unlock the ship for other characters on the account.
So just go to tier 5 and move on to the next ship.

All your inputs have been quite reassuring. And I agree, even if they made it a Zen unlock at least that would be something.
I recently got the Lifetime subscription, and made another new character just to see... Over 25 boxes, including purchases and Christmas, special events. ETC... 25 Boxes sitting in my inventory for a single character.
I have been avoiding playing because of the mounting of tasks rather than grinding more (and I am a hardcore grinder)
Please continue to comment in this thread as I wish to try to get as much attention to this topic as I can.
Yes, it was hard enough getting Masterys on my 8 toons, now I got a fresh new Jemmy that has essentially none. I just don't have the time!
So I'm not even gonna bother with them on my alts anymore. I'm gonna put them back in their primary ships and they'll have whatever Masterys they currently have to choose from. My main will get them so that means I have to do the Jemmy ships on the Jemmy to get T6 mastery unlock and then my main can do them. It's just too hard to make a new toon after (how long has T6 been out? How many T6 ships are there?) and have to grind out a TRIBBLE-load of Masterys.
And it seems like it takes alot longer to get a Mastery done now (to T5). So not only would I have another toon to do, but each new ship will take longer to do. Plus Swarm (adv) gives practically 0 XP! Just did one on a fresh ship, it got me 1/6th the way to level 1! And that's after an orgy of Hur'q killing!
And on a completely selfish note...
Account wide mastery unlock would be a BIG selling point for Lifetime Subscription sales. *nudge *nudge *wink *wink
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.
I only got my T6 unlock for my Vanguard Dreadnaught Cruiser a few days ago.
And based on how long that took, I'm not bothering with it for the other ships.
Or to go to T5 on my other characters who now have access to that ship.

I also don't understand why the tier six master even exists. If the point was to unlock for everyone, that is what ANY bought ship does for free, instead they added a 50K+ per ship to enjoy the same privilege that we get from every other bought ship...
And then STILL we have to re-unlock all our masteries
Simply to push the numbers. To unlock the jem ships account wide you HAVE to make a jemmy and slog through all the older content just to get access to grinding points like argala and the rest. I'm sure there's also some temporarily exclusivity incentive behind it but first and foremost it's to please the almighty gods metrics.

Yeah, its not something they put in for the players.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.
Well, to be fair, I was going to create a Jem'Hadar character anyway, so from my personal perspective, I never felt like I was being compelled to do something I would not have done.
But flipside viewpoint, are there players who did not want to make a Jem'Hadar and did so just to get the account wide ship unlocks.
If there are players like this, then they may have resented the Trait Grind.
I'm so disillusioned with the Trait Grind now, this is what happened today:
S.I.F. Burst (Starship Trait)
After achieving Level 5 in your Vorgon Ytijara Dreadnought Cruiser (T6), you will unlock the “S.I.F. Burst” Starship Trait. While this Starship Trait is slotted, activating any Hull Healing Bridge Officer Ability will cause enemies within 3km to suffer radiation damage over time.
First thought, cool Trait and a useful one.
Second thought, I am not levelling that ship up seven times just to have it unlocked account wide for all my characters!
Third thought, that ship is getting instantly sent to Drydock unlevelled as soon as it's unlocked.
And that will most likely be my reaction to ship Trait unlocking from now on.
For the record, I do not mind doing this once if it was to unlock the trait account wide, but seven times (once per character) is too much work.
And yes, it's work, not play!!!!
Bees like honey, they don't like vinegar.

Account unlocks would be nice, yes. And be fair too.
Worse for me is the Fleet ship situation, though, where you have to (*&^%$% redo your entire ship, after having reached Tier 5, when you get the Fleet version thereof. That's just incredibly lame. If the store can figure out I only need 1 ship module, then it should just fill out my Mastery on it too.

With the massive amount of content that STO provides (Cudos)... I've never run out of things to do on the RARE occasions all my ships are unlocked. Has anyone ever.. Run out of things to do in game that they feel they needed this grind?

I wouldn't consider one mission or one queue/rep daily "slogging through ALL of the older content"
Speaking from personal experience and just working on the T5 Traited ships, it ws not just one queue daily, it was several over the course of a day.
And even with that amount of intense activity, it still took something like 3 days-1 week to get just one ship levelled.

So the dreadnought from the Risa Event is now started, and all I can think is... Another ship For my 8 toons to unlock.
I'm excited for the ship itself, and I love the game so I am excited and just.. deflated by the work it represents.
Hit on the nose Tilarta. Work not play.

Honestly, I don't think they care no matter where you post it. You can try reddit though, they seem to respond there more then they do here.
Yes, account unlock for traits would be nice.. heck it just flat out makes good sense. Cryptic however seems to have no interest in changing this silly system.
I have no idea why they insist that this be such a grind. I am like you, I like to experiment with builds and see how different traits and skills work together. Many times though, I have been discouraged from trying an idea or build just because it would involve grinding out the needed ship traits just to give it a try.
As someone that has about 3000hrs into the game (about 2.5hr/day) I think that Cryptic really needs to start focusing on Quality of Life Improvments, Everything from fixing UI, to required map hopping (e.g. going warping to your fleet star base space to beam to the inside ground... why?) to Account Wide Rewards.
I am running 7 Mains, 4 of my original mains have become more or less static while I bring up the other 3, only when I get done early and provding I have the time I can play the missions.
I have posted in the feedback some of my ideas that i am hoping that someone will look into, but at this point I am just veting.
Thank you Toby! hitting it on the nose pretty much with your references about the insane amount of maintenance that is required on each character far exceeds the amount of time actually playing what IS a fantastic game.
I'm just hoping that all in all by keeping this forum alive that it will at some point be taken into notice. And where we can be heard, or at least acknowledged.
Seasoftomorrow Hit it on the head with the statement " I have been discouraged from trying an idea or build just because it would involve grinding out the needed ship traits just to give it a try"
How many times do people just build off guides, or bother with experimenting when the mountain of work blocking the way is just ever growing?
And just cause it was mentioned to me the other day.. XP boosts... I would actually be MORE likely to spend money on them if I knew I was unlocking a trait for every character. To put simply.. The 100+ hours I will be unlocking ships, will not entice me to buy tons of XP boosts just to reduce that to a 88+ hours of work... But I would buy xp boosts if it meant, I could knock off my three new ships in 2 hours and be back into content.
According to my spreadsheet, across 20 characters I currently have 76 ships to level up (including both Jem and the one Cardassian ship I got with ViL), not counting the summer ship when I get it, or the roughly twenty ships to level up on my new Jem'Hadar and thirty on my (currently level 3) Cardassian. Doing one Borg red alert a day per character, on days I can stomach that, gives me about 1/10 a ship a day per character. Argala and other solutions suggested have proven to be numerically inferior to this strategy. Account unlocks--which are technically quite feasible, because I have some Fed ships that unlocked Rom or KDF traits, and vice versa--would reduce the work 20-fold, and increase my likelihood of buying any new ship 20-fold as well.
