STO Geezers know this is the pre-loading of content for the next season / expansion, so that the servers are not overloaded when it is released. A little pain now for a lot less pain on release day.

I saw mine get to 359K, decide it had had enough, and stop. It's probably running a checksum versus an index just in case the 5B file changes before the release.
Prepatch doesn't function properly so you're better off stopping it from doing anything until just before the contents actually due to arrive and even then patch day arrives and you still have to download the entire thing all over again.
Pre-patching, totally normal before new seasons and expansions
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Do it now and it get it over with then you don't have to wait for it to download after maintenance on Tuesday at a much slower pace. The only wait you'll have then is it being patched into the main game files, which will be vastly quicker.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
Even though pre-patching happens with every major update (season/expansion), people still seem surprised and/or confused by it, and want to talk about it. A lot. In their own individual threads. So, I'm re-opening this one and all of them are getting merged here from now on.

You seem to be missing an important difference: patching is now occurring, not after you played the game, but (also) at startup of the launcher!
If it closes then in theory you've already got the patch thats available, I let it patch over night last night and after getting the phoenix box today had the launcher popup and close after exitting the game.
In practice don't hold your breath as the previous prepatching for me has almost always resulted in having to download the entire thing over again anyway.
One option is to switch to ondemand patching and you'll get less of the big patch but might be requires to sit about while missions and whatnot are loaded up. If you're going to do sector BZ stuff this probably isnt a great idea as there doesn't seem to be a solo option for them meaning by the time you get that done you'll just have to leave right away.
I was hoping that they finally got this system working as I think PS4 gets a patch today for delta recruits, is also in the middle of the MI event and has no system of prepatch.
Sadly I've just opened the launcher to get the game updated and have been met by a 5 gig patch that it's trying to download at the moment.

Or disregard it completely as going by the past few prepatches it won't actually speed up the patching process on release of VIL.

I don't want to lose progress.
if you stop mid way... next time the DL patch size still stays the same... not sure if it gets to the parts it previously downloaded will it skip it.

Only game related patch is the 9gigs on exit.
