Ship named after Admiral Ross (DS9's Barry Jenner)?

kingarthur81kingarthur81 Member Posts: 29 Arc User
With the death of Barry Jenner (Admiral Ross) in 2016 and the forthcoming DS9-themed expansion, it might be fitting to have a new ship named after him - U.S.S. William J. Ross ?

Usually you don't see ships named after officers who are still active. Naming a ship after admiral Ross would mean that they'd have to kill off the character and I don't think they're willing to do that.

I doubt being dead is required, only that you prove worthy of such recognition. We have a USS Sitak that may have been named after the still-living Vulcan Admiral Sitak.

I wouldn't want to see a USS Jenner and having a Cardassian captain if you know where that one is going. No offense to Barry, but i don't want his legacy in trek tained by those reality tv nobidies and their mother simply because people can make fun of the Cardassian name and fit it with Jenner.

The USS Bill Ross would be a good name to have on a ship on STO.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

In real life, ships are named after living people. I'm sure Starfleet would continue this tradition.
The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush comes to mind.

I would name the ship either the USS Ross (Similar to the USS Kirk) or the USS William J. Ross

    I wasn't aware of that.

But to be fair, I don't think it would be the... right thing to do. As far as we are aware, there is no USS Sisko, no USS Picard or USS Janeway.

Ship classes are only named after characters that are no longer 'living'. Hence why we have the Tucker, Daystrom and Scott class whereas a La Forge class instead of the Tucker class would have made more sense imo.

It seems that they want to avoid naming ships after living heroes, generally speaking and there are probably good reasons for that. Also note that Bush was a president, and he isn't really known for any possible serving in the military. So that's quite a difference from a Starfleet officer who is likely still active, having named a ship after him in the same organisation. It would be kind of awkward I think.

Montgomery Scott is still alive after being discovered in suspension in a transporter pattern buffer after discovery of the Jenolan Dyson Sphere.

True, Scotty is still alive. I remembered just now that there's even an episode with him...

Is Scotty still alive in 2410? The only time I remember seeing a version of him that wasn't from the 23rd century, he came foward from the 24th century.

According to at least one novel ("Engines of Destiny") Scotty survives until at least 2422!
Unknown whether this novel is canon in Star Trek Online, however.

    USS Winston S. Churchill
    USS Dwight D. Eisenhower
    USS Carl Vinson

    USS Abraham Lincoln

lots of named ships in the US navy over the last century, both living and dead in honor of their importance and actions.

It isn't out the Realm of possibilities, especially considering there are a few named ships in STO

    USS Kirk - Exeter Class
    USS Phlox - Galaxy Class
    IKS Chang - Vo'quv Class
    RRW Cretak - Ha'apax Class
USS Montgomery Scott - Sentinel Class

Adding the USS William Ross would be a simple matter to an NPC ship.

I named my Phantom William Ross when Delta Rising came out; don't suppose that counts?

    Good points.

I think that Arleigh Burke might be the best example of a real-life Admiral who had a ship (first of its class actually) named after him, while he was still alive. Burke, like Ross, was a war hero and late in life, had a ship named after him.

I would like to add the USS McCoy and the ISS Spock to your list of STO ships named after characters.
Dr. McCoy and Mirror Spock are still technically alive in canon.

It doesn't have to be a new ship design. I would settle on a Prometheus-class USS William J. Ross as an NPC ship, in a mission.

Closer to 46 but the point still stands, he is probably gone by 2410.

Though Farpoint happened in 2364, which is 46 years before the current 2410.

15 years between Farpont and Nemesis, 8 between Nemeis and Hobus, 23 between Hobus and 2410.

since Bellerphron was his flagship, an intrepid would be more fitting

A nod to the post-DS9 novels. In which, his new flagship, Cerberus, was Prometheus-class.

Obviously not. There is, however, a USS Kirk, USS McCoy, ISS Spock, etc.
