no, only 1 or 2 missions that requires you need a shuttle from what I recall. sides shuttle combat is absolute cr@p. if it was a combat fighter sim... it would be ok but it's not.

I don't know... Shuttle Fleet Alert is pretty popular when the Shuttle Weekend comes around.
Also a good excuse to Blast Star Fox music while flying a Yellowstone or the new Type 7 we got with the TNG Anniversary.
For the first shuttle mission, you get a free shuttle. That's all you need. There's only so much you can do with a shuttle anyway that an expensive one off the Exchange is pretty pointless other than looks.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.
Still some of the ZEN shuttles do have some nice admiralty boosts like the Yellowstone which awards 5x crit chance. Also the Delta flyer gives +10 to Starships assigned to a mission. I admit I like the impulse engines that come in the Yellowstone for those weekends when there are shuttle weekend events... ...but I admit I often load them into my Delta Flyer.
No you do not. Outside of shuttle weekends if you don't do those don't bother.
wrong ssbn655 when doing admiralty, add certain shuttles gives you nice boosts in crit. ive found depending on assignment depends on the shuttle. i have 5 different ones and they do great for crit boosts

Question was if you NEED one. so ssbn655 was correct. You may WANT more for various reasons, but you don't need them.

Yeah outside of when you need one for the small number of missions that use them, or a weekend event that happens using them. There is not a lot of reason to use them, add in that really outside of some minor stat differences, and visuals just not that interesting to fly.
Now if we got method to make such small craft actually seem useful, and interesting to fly that did not take having missions restricted to only using that ship type, than I could see it being something appealing. Like for me if they had it in place that if you had a shuttle/fighter readied alongside your starship when you died, than you could launch your shuttle/fighter using it for the duration till you could respawn, but the issue with this is the short respawn timer an so that would be needed to be increased potentially.
For missions? There is one STF that uses a shuttle, and 1 story mission that requires it. If you meant pets on carriers/flight deck cruisers, they're not required. It's based on play style at that point, personally I really enjoy the "Summoner" ships. Helps provide my engineer captains with more dmg options.
If i remember correctly (i may be wrong) there are only 2 episodes that need shuttle/fighter - "The Vault" from "Romulan Mystery" and one episode from "The Delta Quadrant" - forgot which one.
Once you got that done, it stopped being question about needing shuttles/fighters, but rather about wanting to have them... still there was some giveaway with nice one for Feds not long ago, also on Alienware Arena there should be still To'duj for KDF giveaway active.(edit) No idea why they call it Tu'doj there though...

Honestly the KDF needs access to more shuttles. I mean can't they make playable Slavers or Interceptors? That would at least give the KDF 2 more small craft.

There are 2 I can recall The Vault (romulun story arc) and Operation Gamma in the dominion war story arc.
I wish they'd give us a basic small craft BOFF/weapons layout, and then, let us skin it with whatever small craft (shuttles/fighters/etc) combat hangar pets we've unlocked.

You only need the default shuttle in all honesty as others eluded to.
That said, I do not regret buying the Aeon shuttle from the lobi store. It gives you access to one of the sweetest ship skins in game for the Wells class/Mobius destroyer and Paradox Sci carrier.
It's really is beautiful. But yeah, non essential, and only a bonus for Space Barbie enthusiasts.
The black Wells class in my sig is sporting it (with Borg shields-which ruin the look imo)
I would not mind if they added a frigate class of small craft, something between a small craft and a full-on starship. Though honestly one of the main shuttles I actually do wish they would add to the game is the scout ship used by Data, also known as either the Venture or talon class shuttles.

The Runabouts are techincally Frigates capable of combat operations packing Phasers and Torpedo loadouts in DS9. In-game the Delta Flyer has the HP of a Frigate, especially as a pet, but the true frigate would be the Callisto.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

I guess the next best thing to a frig would be a BoP and the Aquarius.
.... I'd so buy an Aquarius if I could take that into shuttle missions instead of an actual shuttle
As much as I love having a personalized shuttle and add dirty little weapons like the 'peng torps to it I do not really like missions which require using them.

Shuttles are all the same tier (there is no 1 - 6 for shuttles) and they level up with you.

Also, this mission is the most powerful shuttle mission.
