I have all the 3 Herald ships.
For my gameplay they are cost/effective ships, I don't complain about their performances.
What I don't like too much is their shape: it is not... Ominous enough.
I mean: let's take a look at the first "Herald" ship...
Dark shades, purple cloud, it is like a skeleton of some ancient, giant monster... Boys, this is
ominous!
I believe that this model is still within the code of STO, so I'll gladly pay some zen to have it for my herald ships.
Even for all of them, if properly scaled.

Placeholder for proper Iconian ships?
It would make sense, to give an early impression on the Iconians until the developers got around to the Iconians themselves.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Nonetheless I like more the placeholder than the current Herald ships.
If you search on the Web, you can even find magazine scans of prototypes of Iconians, including an Iconian using a crab-like personal vehicle (probably the precursor to L'Miren).
Right now we are only wondering why the Tzenkethi are blowing up planets and what those crystals have to do with it. But that's just an unanswered question, the fact that they are doing it is known to us.
That Iconian ship was scary, it belonged to an (at that time) unseen enemy and the untouchable nature of it, sending just a threatening message and disappearing before we could do anything, made it very interesting.
much less "Look upon us and tremble" and more "Look upon us and giggle" because their ships look like they made of cheap plastic

A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch."
"We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Halloween is coming up here in the US, would make for an awesome surprise.
Anyone want to give me a Temporal Heavy Dreadnought pack? I'll be your friend
I like it!
Now if only that was a dev's reaction :P
Who's in charge of ships? Someone get him in here.

While I do agree with those liking this design better than what the Herals ships ended up with, devs are on record with saying that having a look for NPShips is nothing near building a player controlled ship. So if that's correct, and I have no reason to doubt it, having the model still available may be useful to look at, but in the end they'd have to design a whole new ship. Which then only becomes a skin.
IIRC that borg cube you speak of about being made of scraps was later used in a voyager episode as a model cube on the USS Raven where a young Seven/Annika was holding before her father told her to put it down.
But yes, the models were built to a scale, put on a stand and foil in the background to simulate star effects, post processing would merely remove the stand and add the visual effects. i think the switch over happened during TNG where it was changed. reason is because CGI was better and not as time consuming.
