So..Best Beam type...Unless your a DPS Chaser (Regularly in the 100k or so) You probably wont see any major differences in the beams. There are some fun things The procs can do (like Most Polarons, Fluidic Antiprotons or Polarized Disruptors as an example) if your spec'd into the Skill that boosts them..

If you like a certain color Id go with that...However most DPSers here would all say ..Coalition Disruptor/Disruptor Variant (as the current meta)..Some might steer ya to Vanilla Antiproton..(no proc but extra crit sev)

Many builders here follow a rule around "dont mix Cannons with Beams"..Tho some might mix beams with (a) Torp..(Sci ship builders ignore this rule we put everything in weapon slots :P).. Cannons (And to some extent Dual Beam Banks) take a bit of Piloting skill..But going all Beam Arrays ensures that you'll have weapons hitting your enemy..Up to you really..Just have to be willing to accept the pros and cons of your preferred weapon type.

okay thanks for the information the reason i put the beam/cannon in my first post, was because i used cannons for hull damage and the beams for shield and a bit of hull damage to help out the cannons. it was a hybrid build but i might try an all beam build once i get better beam arrays, though would you recommend polaron or anti proton for dps?

Do you run a parser(If you dont know what this is then the answer is no)? If so..Unless your around 75-100k or in a premade team (coalitions used to really shine here)..Its not really gonna matter.

Chose your poison. If your not in one of the 2 categories I mentioned..pick something you like and dont look back. There are certain mods that are favored right now, CrtD, Dmg and Pen (Over is fun and much safer after the FBP nerf)

..I Run Polaron or Polarized Disruptors due to the drain proc (and I spec in to drain)..But I also just fly a sci ship..no cruisers or escorts..

1 Having mk14 weapons trumps beam type and mods.
2 good mods trump beam type.

As odin says it doesn't matter that much, however disruptors are good at the introductory/free gear level and elite dps chaser level.

Disuptors come in many flavours and have a free weapon/weapon/console set with monster set bonuses:

Which effectively grants all your weapons half a pen mod and the equivalent boost of a couple of tac consoles

and this free consoles adds 40% of a pen mod

The best individual beam arrary in the game is the Terran rep one and highest dpsing in premades will be the coalition disruptors.

If you like photon torps and disruptors you can get the Counter-Command Multi thing console:
