In Game Con warning to users stole my 10 mil EC *SERIOUS*

furiousfred77furiousfred77 Member Posts: 20 Arc User
I am a returning player and have not played in a long time but my some friends of my started to play on the PC again so I have too. We were thinking of starting a fleet to share stuff and for some more stuff to do in game. I noticed in general chat player *REMOVED PER FORUM RULES* said he was selling his fleet in General chat so I thought it would be cool for me and my friends. Anyway to keep a long story short he took my money and ran. Since I have returned the general community has been super nice and helpful to me and this put me in a trusting more than I should state. I don't know if I will get any of my money back but more importantly I wanted to make sure he couldn't rip off anyone else...This type of thing makes the community less trusting and less nice to players that are returning like me or new to the game. So I am posting this to help anyone else that I can not be taken advantage of like I was. I want to return the good where I can.

Again Player name is
*REMOVED PER FORUM RULES*

Fleet he is "selling"
Royal Navy Command first fleet

I understand the feeling and the desire to warn people, but I am afraid naming and shaming is not allowed on the forums. You might want to remove the name. You can still warn people that they shouldn't "buy" fleets from people.

Anything you can't sell via the Exchange or via the Trade Window is suspicious.

naming and shaming is against the forum rules and as far as here on the forums it's your word against his.

    a) Thanks for the warning, as that is what this is.
    b) As I understand it, selling a Fleet as you describe is not possible in the game.
    c) Edit your post to remove the player name and take this up with the Devs. This is considered "Naming and Shaming" and is against forum rules.

I can remove the name if you tell me how to go back and change the post..should the fleet name be removed as well...

just a side note shaming wasn't my intent...just wanted to help people

I think that's generally understood furiousfred77, but that's what the forum rules consider this to be. We just don't want you to get penalized for helping out.

10m ec is nothing for a fleet - too good to be true price level.

A fleet cannot be sold, what you can have happen is be invited to join and then promoted to the top and have the existing owner leave. Payment for this is probably against terms and conditions.

I'd be skeptical of anyone offering a fleet to random people honestly. Only way I'd accept leadership of a fleet is if I earned it or made my own.

And frankly I'm happy where I am in my fleet.

I'd say 99% of the cases where someone claims to be selling a fleet/guild (it's not STO exclusive after all) are either cons or the fleet is in such dire straights that it might as well be a con (for example due to massive in-fighting). After all why would anyone want to get rid of a healthy fleet or if they're quitting the game give it to someone they trust.

Agreed. If a fleet leader is going to leave, why give the fleet to a RANDOM PERSON? They'd either just leave, thus punking the fleet if it was a bad relationship type thing, or promote a trusted fleetmate to leader to take over before leaving.

A possible legitimate reason for selling a Fleet is due to everyone in the Fleet not playing anymore. If no one has played for 6 months or more, then it gives good reason to sell the Fleet.

Consider it a moderately-expensive lesson in trusting humanity, and move on.

Would be better to just disband then honestly. Why sell a dead fleet if no one cares about it anymore?

If "seller" was quitting the game, he wouldn't accept ECs as payment.

Yet another example of why you shouldn't trust ANYONE, not other players, not the devs, not PWE, not even your "friends".

    For the money, I'd presume.

If it seems too good to be true, it most likely is OP, and it's a shame that you've been caught out on this.

If you and your friends are still looking for a fleet, I run a very casual FED fleet that's Lvl 60, and in a decent armada. You can do your own thing without any obligations (bar requirements for promotions). Just send me a message ingame if you're interested.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Yes... but if they are planning on quitting the game too... what use is that wad of ECs to someone not going to play? There is that potential angle too.
The fact of the matter is, there are shady people out there wanting to take advantage of people for their own personal gain.

Instead of buying a fleet get 4 mates and make your own, join an armada and you will have it to sped in no time at all

I never do person to person private trades if the item i want isnt on the exchange then to hell with it.

10M is a pretty small amount now-a-days. We've all seen those threads where someone found 10+ Masterkeys on the Exchange for the price of 1. Now that's gotta hurt. Sadly there is no reputable 3rd party that can be an intermediary for such transactions.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Well, if there are still decent fleet holdings in them, it might be of interest. The question is really what the seller gets out of it - he could just let the people that wish to buy it join the fleet. Promote them to highest rank and let them do their thing.

if he doesn't want to play anymore, anything given to him ingame is without value.
