Gravity Well changes?

So was playing yesterday and notice that my gravity well wasn't stopping anything. I know said that it would scale more with the skill but does that mean if you don't have the any skill points in it its worthless or is it a bug? I thought I'd ask here before I did a bug report to see if I'm not understanding the new way it's suppose work. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

How many points do you have in control expertise? You can see this if you look in your ship's stats - science stats - when in space at earth spacedock.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."

"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."

Oh sorry should have said that from the start. About 27 is whats showing in that skill. I know this really low but it didn't seam to matter before the last update.

yeah that will be too low. if you haven't used the skill respec yet go in and change your skills and get the first 2 levels of control expertise. If you want even more and can get access to the Krenim fleet lab there are good science consoles there with control and exotic particles. there are many other ways to increase control - http://sto.gamepedia.com/Skill:_Control_Expertise

I noticed that my gravity wells seem not to hit as hard on my two sci captains. So I guess cryptic did do something to them. I haven't had much time to figure out what I need to do to fix them yet.

Yes, they nerfed the gravity well around 30% in damage. I tweeked some stuff - mostly sacrificing shield power - and got the nerf down to around 5%.

Even with high ControlX it is way less powerful for grouping mobs. I have 325 Control + Control amp powers in the sci skill tree and I find mobs ignoring the -repel most of the time, even with buffs up and batteries/EPtA.

Tbh I feel it's sort of useless now for the primary reason I was using it for :/

It may be easier to use Tyken's rift. Removing enemy's engine power also slows them down ;)

To be honest, I've stopped using Gravity well a few months ago already. Tyken's rift can work just as fine in slowing down enemies, and it has the additional benefits of disabling shields and reducing enemy weapon output.

It takes a bit longer to hold enemies in place of course, but overall I find that its extra benefits make it more worth the Boff slot.

hmm, i run around 200 control and i think 480 particles and they are all caught in the well. i keep the aux 120-130.

Gravity Well got hit very hard with this update. I went from doing about 4k per tick to about 1600 per tick (pre buffs), and it's ability to hold is definitely lessened. However, Tykens Rift now seems to be the ability to use, which is refreshing. Not only does it do nearly twice as much damage as Gravity Well, it also gets a bonus from Drain Infection, for me is about another 700 per tick. And with just a few points into drain (about 200 or so) You can completely disable small groups of NPC ships.

I think it applies control immunity too? I noticed you couldn't chain it as well anymore.

What might also be relevant is that the control effect also scales more with Aux power now, IIRC. So look both at Control Expertise and Aux.

The reduction to the damage grav-well does is not so much an issue to me, as I used it more for the control/grouping effect. Even though i can somewhat understand the idea of reducing grav-well to give some appeal to using tyken's rift, but almost wish it would have been more of a change to make the control effect ramp up over time starting low an proceeding higher reaching it's peak about 10 seconds in of the 20 second duration.

Another data point here...I have 400 CtrlX plus transient effects, and 135 Aux power. GW3 went from -0.31 repel to -0.37 repel at rest, going to -0.32/-0.40 during combat. It doesn't seem any less powerful in pulling enemies, in fact possibly a bit stronger pull (they seen to move faster toward the center of the anomaly when it gets ahold of them).

Gravity well 1 isn't even SLOWING the enemies down. This update to gravity well was unnecessary and unwanted.

Yeah, just tried it on my cruiser today. I don't have alot of points in that skill and had to double check that I actually clicked the button since no one slowed down, let alone get sucked in. I can understand if it was doing 'too much' damage but the pull part is more important to alot of people than the damage it does.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

I haven't gotten much time into playing since the update...so TR really does more damage than GW? Guess I have some changes to do.

I too have noticed it pulls less now, at any rank or skill/aux setting.
Prior to S13 it would pin stuff right down in the middle pretty fast. Now the enemy ships just seem to swirl around the edge of the purple effect, not in the centre. That's with ctrlx of about 200-300 I believe.

I am suffering the nerf as well. On the orther hand however I think it is right that one has to invest skillpoint and equipment into something to make it work, and to to get it fo free.
Its like that in any MMO.
I will now try to balace my weapon damage with GW. Or simply not use it any more.
