Coming back to star trek online

Hey everyone,

I used to play this game 2 or 3 years ago, I bought a t5 vesta pack back in the day. Now I log on and realize t5 is no longer highest, so thats 45 euro I would've rather "wasted"on a t6 ship. Also I guess all my old gear is useless? I have a complete borg set for space, not much stuff for ground since ground sucked (and still sucks it seems).

Does anyone have advice on what t6 science ship to get and how to equip my t5 vesta so i can still do the que's (like the difficult ones)?
And one final question, is it normal that all my energy credits have been deleted. Pretty sure I was near the cap, now I have nothing.........

So basically.....can my old account be salvaged? xD

The T5 Vesta is still one of the best ships, certainly when upgraded. I don't know about all the different places for build advice, but The Science Channel definitely has some people in it who can advice you on how to build it. I'm also happy to help out - I think my own Vesta does reasonably well - although I must add that I'm mostly using reputation stuff so that might take a few weeks to collect.
Gear should not have become useless, but you can upgrade it to Mk 14 now.

Ground does not suck imo. Getting a good ground build is also relatively easy and cheap in my experience.

T5 is still very viable, and upgradeable to T5U. The difference mostly is the T6 has the new Specialization Seats and a Starship Trait that you can earn by flying that ship. Your Reputation Gear is not useless, even at MK XII, but you can upgrade it to MK XIV through the Crafting System without needing to get all new gear.

The Vesta now has a T6 version, if you want to go for another Vesta. The Nebula also recently received a T6 version as well.

I cannot say what happened with your EC, although, you can earn a lot of EC pretty quickly using the Admiralty System.

T6's are not a 'silver bullet to your spear' by a long shot. T5's can be upgraded, as can your equipment. Your account is fine. You just need to catch up that's all.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? T-5 Vesta is not outdated at all. Upgraded to T5-U it is very potent ship to this day. Just because a ship has a T-6 label does not make it the end all be all.
Gear start the R&D tasks and get up to Level 15 so you can make the rare upgrade tokens or if you don't want to wait buy them on the Exchange as all gear, kits, etc. can be upgraded to level 14 right up to epic quality. Just because gear is rep 12 doesn't mean it's obsolete not by a long shot. Just the step up from very rare 12 to very rare 14 is a huge boost. When you hit level 15 in R&D in the various disciplines you can craft some fantastic items (it's a little hit or miss but wow). You can craft a lower level piece of gear and fairly cheaply bring it to epic quality and then bring it to level 14.
    Welcome back have fun !

Adding to that... if you wish to see some quick improvements and you're using regular tactical consoles, upgrade those first would be my advice. Since one console boosts all weapons, it's a good way to start. Even ultra rare Spire consoles only take two upgrades to get it to 13. After that I would upgrade my weapons, cause indeed, there's a noticable difference in performance even if you go from 12 to 13.

At first it may seem to require a lot of resources, but after the first items have been upgraded both the game and upgrading things further will get a lot easier.

T5 ships in general are still viable ships. T5-U ships can stomp anything in this game.

I play normal difficulty with mostly MkXII VR gear and whatever ship I feel like flying and there's no content that screams "MUST HAVE T6 SHIP!"

Still, the event ships are now also all T6, and only require doing an activity that takes a few minutes per 20 hours to get. I'm eager to see what this year's Summer Event ship is going to be. Another Vorgon or something else?
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

Love to see another Nahkul ship as the reward I love the look of them. They remind me of sharks and mantas. But another Vorgon would be cool! Or better yet a Risa Heavy Destroyer that could look like a Zumwalt Class destroyer. A 4-4-4 console ship with a 5/3 weapon slot would be awesome!

I'm kind of partial to alien-type ships, even though I have nothing against 'canon' fed/kling/rom starships.

So anything they bring in would be appreciated. I always RP interesting ways my captains 'acquired' them :D

Still flying my Vesta (I did upgrade it to a T5U), the main components are still mostly MACO (upgraded to MkXIV) and my kdf are still using the borg sets (again MkXIV). Your gear is by no means worthless, it just needs some upgrading if you want it to be the highest. I know I'm content with everything I've got now that most of it is upgraded.

I'll probably eventually go to a T6 Vesta, but having looked at the stats I'm in no hurry to do so and think I'll just wait until my lifer's stipend builds up enough to buy the discount bundle instead of any individual ship. Off the top of my head the T6 versions have a little more hull, five more sub-system power, the ability to use some of the specialization skills, an extra BOff ability (Lt Cmdr vs Lt), and the starship traits.

Na... You can now upgrade your gear... Granted, it takes time to level your RnD and get the upgrades and dil required to upgrade, but it's doable.

Well you could always go with the T6 Vestas... of cause they will become obsolte once T7 is introduced, but you know... I am wrong for thinking like that.
But if you like the build you have, I'd suggest going for upgrading the gear you have and buying a ship-upgrade tolken to make your current ship a T5U.

No... That is not normal, but these days, EC is about as easy to come by as getting wet while it rains. Just play the game, and you get plenty of vendor trash to earn you EC:

Depends on how much work you are willing to put into it.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Wow thanks for the replies everyone! So upgrading a ship to t5 U is expensive? And I have 3 vesta ships........do I have to upgrade them seperately? Is upgrading to t5U worth it or should I save for a t6 ship?
Upgrading 3 ships will take forever I guess?!
Without spending money I'd like to upgrade my things. Really don't want to ever spend money on this game again, I feel ripped off for spending 45 euro on 3 ships that aren't the cream of the crop anymore.

I really like the space part of this game, but it's costs(time it takes to aquire things) are starting to put me of.
Also I try to do the events, but don't have much time. Was really looking forward to that event science ship t6, but only got to 800 event currency............so much time spend on NOTHING -.-
I just don't have the time to earn ships it seems........
So basically is this game p2w if you can't game every day?

    So many questions..... xD

Just upgrade the one you fly the most... There isn't THAT much of a difference, and you can get the tolkens off the exchange.

BTW: Paying with Euros, huh? Where are you from?

I still say you didn't waste your euros. A friend of mine loves her Vesta and is drooling over the T6 version. The upgrade tokens can be got off the exchange or from the C-store.

Me, I'm saving up for the Multi-mission Science Explorer bundle nine pack, only while I'm doing Arc quests and saving my stipend, I'm also waiting for the next 20% off ship sale to get it.

Agreed. Even if the T5 Vesta isn't the best ship in its class anymore, it has been exactly that for a long time. So nothing was wasted if you used the ship before something better was available.

And again OP, it's still a very good ship. I would never consider it a waste just because after several years a slightly better version came along.
  • alcyoneserenealcyoneserene Member Posts: 2,414 Arc User
Each T5 ship requires its own upgrade module, but once upgraded it's account-wide unlock for that ship, so you can dismiss/reclaim/upgrade endlessly on any character. I'd also upgrade the one you fly most - at least you'll still have a really good 3-piece console and set bonus, and kitbashing options, so the other 2 ships don't go to waste completely.

Lower tier ships can still take on end-game content just fine provided one has proper gear, setups, some piloting skill and decent team mates, at least advanced doesn't need a whole lot.

T6 ships are much better, no doubt, and I speak from experience having flown T5, T5-U, and T6 on alts where the fine differences are much more noticeable, but what really matters comes from all the stuff that gets added to the ship. For science, temporal powers seem quite powerful and make it easier to do science than back in T5 era where we had long cool-downs, limited choices, and higher cost of gear.

Of course, temporal powers could also go the way of intel powers (OSS overcap on aux nerf) once some new science shiny comes out.

If you don't have time, don't bother chasing metas, just have fun with your T5-U Vesta and enjoy the free content so you won't have a second Delta Rising to survive through.

Concerning the EC, were you a monthly subscriber or a Lifer? As a regular subscriber your EC cap is increased, but my understanding is that if you let it lapse and EC above the free to play cap you lose.

I won't get too much into build advice but since you're Fed, you have access to a whole lot of very solid science vessels. If you liked the T5 Vesta so much, upgraded to T5U that can still perform. But if you want to take that same kind of ship to T6 the T6 Vestas are out there still.

In Fed Science Vessels alone, the T6 selection is excellent. You can't go wrong with any of them as it depends on how you like to line up your boff abilities.

Specializations like Intel, Command, Temporal give more build variety. Unfortunately for your T5 Vesta they cannot access those in terms of boff abilities. Bonuses from specialization when they're set to active still work just not the boff abilities on T5 ships. Different T6 ships have access to different specializations, i.e. hybrid boff seating. Like a Eng Station having access to Engineering and Intel abilities. This opens up a lot of room for flexibility.

As far as build, I'm assuming you had a decent idea on how to setup before. Borg Set is still excellent in CC builds, reinforce that with whatever Starship Control Expertise consoles you have on hand and your Gravity Wells will still be great in the CC capacity. I'd say keep at that for a while until you get more comfortable with the numerous additions to the game since you last played.

I also suggest not to get too crazy in spending for the moment. "Winter is coming" and there's a "Rebalancing" effort in the wind. So don't get crazy on big expenses because who knows what's going to get nerfed. Whether in terms of big IRL money, FC, EC, Dil, don't get too crazy.

Upgrading things can be expensive cash wise IF you buy Zen and convert to dilth. The gear upgrades do require Dilth and the amount depends on the upgrade used Green is 700 dilth, blue 1500 dilth each and several must be used to upgrade gear from one level to another. Of course there are exceptions to this cost with the Admirality Romulan upgrade tokens earned by maxing the Rom Admirality missions then doing them until you earn a set of four No dilth cost tokens and the on occasion 20 Key ring sale that has an instant max level and epic upgrade zero dilth cost token per 20 key set sold, this is an on and off sales thing. If you started the event ship you should be able to finish it next year. Now the Klingon Admirality missions do offer dilth more then the other two mission blocks (Fed and Rom) so dilth is fairly easy to gather doing them. The Rep chains are definitly worth doing as you can turn in for example 50 Delta rep tokens for 500 dilth and there are other maounts as well however the highest payback ratio is still the 15 plus 7500 EC for 360 dilth. As always if you have patience you can buy every ship in the game by Dilth to Zen and not spend a euro or dollar of hard cash. If you are in a rush for the shiney then yes spend money but the game is not P2W never has been. The game can be played anyway you want these days from being patient and grinding Dilth and EC and buying gear off the exchange or ships via the dilth to Zen, crafting gear your self or buying ships outiright with real cash. IMHO the options that players have to acquire gear and ships has never been more varied and player friendly.

If you don't want to spend any more €uros for now, upgrading your ship should be doable and serve you fine. You'll need some EC for that to get it from the Exchange, or you need to get some Zen (via the Dilithium Exchange perhaps) to get it from the C-Store. (I believe technically it would be more advisable to buy Master Keys from Zen - however you got that Zen - and then sell the Keys for EC, and then use the EC for the upgrade token. The Upgrade Tokens sell for less EC/Zen then the Master Keys.)

Just remember to check the C-Store in the promotion and legacy tab to see if you got anything that you might be able to claim. I am not sure, I think lifetime subscriptions got a free upgrade token for example.

Your gear is upgradable, of course that will take EC and Dilithium and possibly training your R&D skills. Only use Superior Upgrade Kits (or Omega Upgrades or any other speciality upgrades from Admirality.)
Split the skills across two or three characters if you want to speed up the process. Each R&D School has a Basic Research Project listed at the bottom of the list - it costs almost nothing to do, but awards a decent amount of R&D XP and can basically run them daily. You can run 3 at a time for one particular school.
Any character that is going to fly Science Vessels might want to master the Science R&D and the Projectile R&D skills, then those traits tend to be very useful for sciency builds.

Your next free T6 ship opportunity will be the Summer Event.

Any ships you owned and dismissed but can still reclaim (this includes unlocked event ships): Reclaim them to add them to your Admirality Cards once your Level 52 or higher. You can then dismiss or drydock them again afterwards. Admirality is a key source for Dilithium and crafting materials. Focus on the Klingon campaign. The Tour of Duty awards a hefty sum of Dilithium.

Another source for Dilithium wil be completing your reputations. It's just a one-time reward (well, the daily projects grant a small number of Dilthium, too), but it can greatly help setting up a character for the endgame.

Since you're for now sticking to a Tier 5 ship, you won't have need for specialization bridge officer stuff, but starting post level 50, you get specialization points. For Science builds, I would recommend the Temporal Specialization as Primary specialization. And currently for everyone ,it seems Strategist (not to be confused with Command or Commando) is a superior Secondary specialization. Consider levelling it first, the tree to the right has skills that seem particularly helpful against our newest foe in Star Trek Online, the Tzenkheti. I noticed a serious survival improvement in Advanced Queues with it.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

Welcome back, OP! I am glad you returned to us. So much to do and use and see. Do/See/Use ALL the things! I hope you have as much fun with them as I have. Other people in this thread have posted technical advice and suggestions about T5 and T5-U. Since they are smarter than I am about most things in this game, I have nothing to add to their excellent ideas.

The advice I would give you about coming back are these things:
    1) If you are having fun playing STO right now and you are looking forward to the next time you play, you are Winning STO!
    2) Still as true as the day you left - A competent player is the only mandatory gear for any ship or away team.

Again, welcome back. See you ingame.
