Returning Player

Hey Guys,

Alittle back story, I played during the closed beta of this game. I also played again after (I think around season 8 but it's been so many years I can't remember.)

In short, I'm looking to get into this game and test the waters but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I scoured the forums and found what looks like a cool reference post with tons of potential information here:

http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/987682/new-sto-game-info-and-academy-index/p1

Problem is, none of the links work. I also cannot chat in Zone chat (Which I'm sure is to keep Chinese credit farmers from spamming you guys, totally understandable but frustrating none the less. I'm sure I will appreciate this more down the road.)

So I can't chat in zone, can't find any reference links. The most I've found is reddit's STObuilds (Which again, I have no idea what I'm reading.) I'm very much looking for a site that shows builds, explains them and rates them. It's how I learn games and enjoy them the most. There is so much in this game, I would hate to even begin to burden asking someone a trillion questions when I can just read these things on my own. As a new player I feel completely overwhelmed and have no idea what to do to progress.

In closing, what are my options? Are there build sites? Are there reference guides? What do I do? Where do I go?

Thanks!

I think you are making it far too hard on yourself. Just start a new character and play the missions.

You don't need to worry about builds until you are level 60 and even then, only if you want to do elite queues

The early part of the game is very forgiving. I wouldn't worry too much about gear/builds until you get to around level 40. I would only start getting really serious about your setup once you hit level 50. Just enjoy the game for now and play the story missions would be my default advice.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

Just create a new captain and level up, it's fun. The story has been revamped and there are now separate partial stories for KDF and Romulans too, as well as a much shorter mini-story for The Original Series captains.

Try cruisers, escorts, science ships, warbirds and see what you like. Once you get a character to 50 or so then start to think more about perfecting a build.

For below 60 you'll be fine with:
    - Beams OR cannons, not both.
    - Torp if you want, I usually include one for the fun of torpedo spread
    - Hazard Emitters and Polarize Hull are good to have once you have enough science slots. Engineering team, tac team and a shield heal are also good to have.
    - Don't buy any gear below level 50, you don't need it.
    - Green mark XII is fine and dirt-cheap

lol this is the most straightforward reply I have seen in years, and it is correct. DPS is the ultimate solution to any STO problem.

DPS is, paradoxically, the ultimate problem in STO. Just sayin'...

Not if you are in the KDF and have a limited color pallet to chose from. You get very limited on Space Barbie choices. Champions Online has a better "Space Barbie" selection of outfits and color pallets available with no categories to kill any ideas like mixing a scarf with a sweater and any off duty pieces that you want to go with on duty only pieces.
