Doug Drexler was asked about the two deflectors recently when he posted Thomas' Artstation page to FB.
He said that the front deflector is left in place (but usually unused), because the ship is still warp capable even when it jetisons it's secondary hull.

Not so much Saucer Sep, but apparently it can dump the added hull in an emergency, and still function. So it obviously needs a working deflector.

It makes sense, most of the technology was still highly experimental at the time so naturally they'd want back-ups on everything.

The Galaxy-class also has a secondary deflector on the underside of the saucer, labeled in the TNG Tech Manual and clearly visible on screen if you know what you're looking for. It doesn't have one in game though. There's a difference between in game mechanics and what the ships would "actually" have. Game mechanics have to serve the game.

huh interesting strange starfleet didn't do this with other ships after all a ship may have to separate in an emergency far away from any friendlies.

Yes, it does. However, we just never got to see Data or another suggest other uses for it. That deflector serves the lower profile saucer section while separated. So it wouldn't really function in quite the same capacity as Voyager's secondary deflector. Not to say a writer couldn't have made it so.

I've always assumed that it was due to the oncoming Earth-Romulan war that they didn't have the time to uninstall the original deflector dish AND install the secondary hull. Cause, you know, manpower shortage?

If you look closely though, the refit has an upgraded saucer deflector, in addition to the brand new one on the secondary hull. If it was purely due to time constraints, they wouldn't have upgraded it.

Makes sense as the secondary hull was added to accommodate a larger more powerful, but more dangerous warp core.

Very true. We have no idea what that deflector could or couldn't do, because it was never brought up on screen. I'd agree it probably isn't as capable as the Intrepid-class one though. But, that Galaxy-class secondary deflector is the very same one the Nebula-class would have, and that gets a secondary deflector in game. My point was that canon logic takes a back seat to the mechanics of the game sometimes.

I would imagine all starfleet ships would have some sort of deflector in the saucer section in case they had to engage the lifeboat protocol. I suppose on the NX refit that would be dumping the big nuclear bomb strapped under the ship and kick in the secondary core to get the hell out of dodge.

Idea here, how about we start a letter writing campaign, or todays equivalent being a social media facebook thingie, getting people to demand a return of Enterprise. It can go to Netflix like other recycled come back shows.
Its not like those actors have found much in the afterlife and are busy.

Besides, depending on when exactly Discovery starts in-universe, we may get to see a NX-Refit in action, either as an old veteran ship or a forgotten relic helping the main characters at one point (like in Beyond).

Enterprise is my second to favorite trek show. Quiet sad it was canceled after it became as good as it did in its third and especially forth season. Think they also had some great plans for a fifth when it was canceled.

It is really nice of cryptic that they brought the NX back to live in STO. I gave it to my prime toon.

Game mechanic wise the NX isn’t sadly anything special but it’s not as if such a thing is needed to beat most of the content.

It really wouldn't hurt if they made a special unique escort with a secondary deflector though, of course they would have to make sacrifices for it however.

Well I also think that ship would have deserved something like it. Or at least some build in abilities like they gave to all other recent lobi and lock box ships.

Quiet franky I have no idea why STO’s interpretation of the NX is even escort. All other “enterprise-hero ships” have been implemented as cruiser (which makes sense to some extent).

Perhaps they should have made the NX simply a real sci ship with a secondary deflector right along with it. Three or four tac cosnoles with an aditional gun port and canon would be satisfied given the NX's fighting duties during the Xindi and Romulan struggles. Game rules would have been satisfied as well considering that some of the sci dreads already have such a loadout.

In any case it's not as if it was meant to be a warship or escort when mankind originally build it and STO should have reflected that better.

Oh well, too late but not that much of an issue.

It's beautifull, fun to play and probably made enough money anyway to keep the lights on at Cryptic’s.
