Little difference between white and purple boffs for space?

PS4 player playing since inception. My main is ranked 53 and I'm getting tired of looking at the same boffs between three Fed characters.

The price for purples at the exchange is ridiculous so I started looking at the requisition officers to see what they had. The only difference I see between a purple and a white boff for 'space' is a leadership skill. I don't see any other difference.

So I can see differences between the two for ground usage but for space is there really any difference between two?

Thanks for the replies, particularly from turbomagnus for the history. Confirms that I'll keep rare/very rare for ground crew only and no issues with making changes to my space crew. Which is what I look at the most in this game.

Now that I'm using T6 ships, won't be doing much with boff swapping or movement once I make my boff purchases.

Not really. The only space traits you might find in any frequency are Leadership (humans) and Efficient (Saurians, some others), mostly the difference is in ground traits. (Unless you save Lobi and get a Talaxian from the Lobi Store - "Salvage Specialist" can be an interesting trait at times)

BOff traits (except for maybe Nausicaan "Pirate" and Romulan "Romulan Operative" and Reman "Infiltrator") don't really seem (at least to me) to play that big a part in space combat. It seems to be more about your ship's equipment and your Captain's traits than your BOffs'.

(Feel free to skip from here)

Bit of a history lesson, but three, four years ago, BOff quality played a role in what abilities a BOff had - the higher the quality, the better their abilities - that all changed a couple years ago when the Skill Revamp, I believe it was, came around. Instead of training a BOff in a new ability completely replacing the old, the new ability was simply added to a list that you could select from for the abilities they had equipped. A lot more BOff Candidates became ability fodder to add abilities to players favorite BOffs.

When the R&D Revamp brought in the ability to craft Training Manuals for higher level abilities (and the resulting ability to buy those Manuals on the Exchange), it pretty much sounded the death-knell for BOff quality having any real function. Training Manuals - whether crafted, bought or made from a BOff Candidate - could be used to teach any quality BOff any ability they could learn. Quality didn't matter. The addition of BOff Specialists to the BOff Vendors added to that with the fact that you could now easily buy Caitians, Remans, etc (depending on your faction) with a Specialization (usually Intelligence) already taught, despite the fact that they were white quality. For people wanting the Specialization or the BOff's species, the quality didn't matter.

Basically, if the BOff you want is white, green or blue quality; if they're Vulcan, FED-Klingon, or Alien; go ahead and get them, don't worry about the space traits or the BOff's quality.
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

Yeah, I haven't cared about the quality of my bridge officers for any real amount of time. For me it's always been what skills they had at level III and how many. That's what really matters on consoles right now because we don't have crafting (yet).

I think the only space traits that can get Superior versions are the Rom/Reman space traits... so if you want VR non Rom/Reman BOs your looking for Superior GROUND traits. Only Roms/Remans players would be looking for Superior Romulan Operative or Superior Infiltrator for Space Traits.

That Hierarchy BOFF from Delta Arc got both Pirate and Efficient space traits - and it's Sci/Intel Purple BOFF
Also i think that Borg BOFFs also have Efficient added... but i may be wrong
Delta Pack got 3 Purple BOFFs (Inte/ 1 of each - Sci/Tac/Eng) for each faction - i think at least 2 of each 3 have also space traits...
And i think the Krenim BOFFs (from Fleet Labs) got some space and ground traits that shortens cooldowns on some skills/powers
For Romulans the D'vex from main plot episode got also nice space trait - "Basic Warfare Specialist"

ALL the characters I got while leveling I've sold on the exchange, green (uncommon) to very rare (purple). The only non-common (white) boffs I have is T'Vall, my liberated borg, and my andriod from LTM.

I personally prefer the uncommon characters, as they were my creation from the beginning.

I wish, though, that their quality increased based on number of real life game hours played with them.

Just picked up that Hierarchy BOFF last night, he's also INTEL... saw the PIRATE and EFFICIENT trait and was sold!

I can confirm that the BORG boff from the CSTORE has EFFICIENT.

If yer a HESTIA ADVANCED ESCORT fan, there's a ready made KOBALI ENG/CMD BOFF hidden in the maze in the mission ASHES to ASHES:

Somehow I missed getting LAW from "FIST FULL OF GROM", he would have been great for a torp boat build :(

Seems like the traits are key. We're pretty limited on console right now.

Any character from any faction can obtain a Boff with Superior Romulan Operative, from the Fleet Embassy. Make sure to get the Rare (blue) Male Romulan Tac Boff as he is the only one to have it, but no worries as he becomes VR (purple) upon being commissioned.

Yes I am aware but you need to settle for a Blue Male Tac Officer... and the OP is about White vs Purple BOs.

There is no Purple BO with SRO that a Fed or KDF can get.

The "color identifier" on the bought BOff is done with a "scan what they have" mentality. So when the "blue" Fed-Rom Embassy SRO BOff is "scanned" to determine rarity, the combination results in a "purple" answer and therefore display.

Gorn and one other BOff race are afflicted by the inverse. One of their traits takes up one of the two "superior" slots on the purple BOff, but it only registers in "normal" quality, so the resultant BOff scan indicates that the BOff in question is a Blue, not Purple...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Final Boff color is dependent on how many Superior Traits they have... so yeah if a "Purple" Gorn only has 1 Sup trait... when commissioned it will turn blue. The SRO Tac on sale with New Rom Rep only has 1 Sup trait... it is marked blue when for sale and when commissioned it is Blue as well. <- From what I recall, I will check console when I visit the embassy again. But it's male so I have never bought one before.

I know SRO is SRO... but I am one who likes to have all Purple BOs... yeah Min/Max be damned. For my Roms characters they want Purple BOs... I can make do with Blue SRO but nope need Purple. To each their own.

Gorn CAN'T be purple because of this actually. :p Not that it matters really.
