Question about crit hit and severity

dcamsdcams Member Posts: 14 Arc User
I didn't play STO in a long time. Started up again on Xbox 1. I'm a little confused about my stats for crit but and severity.

I run 4 DHC and 2 turrets in the back
My DHC bonuses are:
1. 70% severity, 10 acc
2. 30% severity, 2% crit chance
3. 30% severity, 2% crit chance
4. 50% severity, 10 acc

My 2 turrents are:
1. 40% severity
2. 40% severity

Now when I check my ship stats under attack it shows I have 2.5% crit chance and 50% severity. How come all of the stats were not added up?

Also I run disruptor damage. Should I use all disruptor damage tact consoles or the cannon damage consoles?

The stat window will only display critical chance and critical severity that is directly applied to you as a character. For example, critical chance provided by traits and Duty Officers will be shown there. However, weapon modifiers will not be displayed there. This type of critical chance and severity is what you can call your innate ability to do X and Y.

But do not worry! Your weapon modifiers is applied on top of your innate critical damage. In your case the total output would be something like this for each weapon:

    4 DHCs:
    1. 70% severity, 10 acc / 120% severity, 2.5% crit chance
    2. 30% severity, 2% crit chance / 80% severity, 4.5% crit chance
    3. 30% severity, 2% crit chance / 80% severity, 4.5% crit chance
    4. 50% severity, 10 acc / 100% severity, 2.5% crit chance

    2 Turrents:
    1. 40% severity / 90% severity, 2.5% crit chance
    2. 40% severity / 90% severity, 2.5% crit chance

If you ask me you are better off using dedicated Disruptor tactical consoles for most optimal damage for this particular energy type. You can most certainly use cannon tactical consoles but you will lose some damage in favor of being able to use cannons of any energy type. Also, it is preferable to focus on one type of energy. Of course, if you feel like mixing between different weapon types you can do so.

Now, I would highly recommend working toward increasing that critical chance to optimize your crit build if that is what you are going for.

Great. I understand it now. Thanks for clearing that up.

How would you recommend me increasing my crit chance? Remember I'm on Xbox 1 so we don't have access to everything the pc does right now. I would assume to just get consoles that add crit? I'm not sure if there is any around since their are no fleet items yet

Also I think I remember when playing on the pc years ago if I stack all distruptor damage consoles they get hit with diminishing returns. I guess even with that it's still worth stacking them all?

Distruptor damage consoles (increasing your distruptor damage) doesnt technicially get hit with diminishing returns, but it is a bunch of complicated math behind it.

OK, take a normal distruptor cannon, it does 200 base damage (before weapon power, skills, traits etc).

OK, add one + 20% distruptor damage console = 240 distruptor damage per cannon

So, add a second distruptor damage console. Now some people would straight away think (ohhh, 240 distruptor + 20% equals 288 distruptor damage.

Nope, the extra console takes away from BASE DAMAGE before any other skill or calculation, including + % damage increase consoles.

So the second console would be 200 + 20% = 40 extra damage. So after the second console your cannon damage would be 280 not 288.

The math is extremely complicated. So technically damage consoles do not suffer from diminishing returns. However, as you add extra + % or + damage type consoles, the benefit you get from each one becomes less.

Hope this helps. Someone here or on reddit/sto would be able to explain it alot better and with alot more information and examples than i can at this time.

As to increasing critical chance. Im a PC only player. While I have a general idea how the game was released on console, i dont have enough information to offer advice. I also prefer if i am unsure about something, to not offer a example, as i might offer an example or path you cannot get to. I would feel bad with myself if i did that to you

Ok. So those consoles just increase the base damage. Thanks for breaking that down. I think they are still worth getting then. And I'm the same way. If I don't know the answer to something I won't say anything at all about it. Thanks for clearing the consoles up though

Also, try this reddit sto link. Its a bit of math, but it does explain damage calculation.

also if you are in sector space it will always show crit chance at 2.5 and crit severity at 50, to get a good reading go to combat space, for example orbit earth space dock

Once you reach level 50 you should be able to play the Azure Neblula Rescue rewards you with Romulan Marks that you can use to level up the New Romulus reputation system (which I think is available for consoles). I think when you reach Tier 2 in that reputation system there should be a "Precision" space trait that you can slot in for your captain; it gives a +4% critical chance.

Additionally, at level 50 the New Romulus Adventure Zone will become available. The adventure zone is also another source to earn Romulan Marks as well as some dilithium from daily missions which involves scanning and gathering peppered with some combat from time to time. I actually like running around doing some of the dailies from time to time. It is a nice break from being in space and doing constant combat.

Console has access to that Rep, but I didn't see the Azure Rescue in the pve que. I'm level 52 right now. And I'm not sure if we have access to the adventure zone either. Don't remember seeing that either anywhere

The math can be complicated but I personally wouldn't say they are overly that complicated. Anyways... yes, all the tactical consoles will apply their % bonus directly to base damage. So as stated, though I will clarify, if your weapon damage is 500 and you add five 30% tactical console, then each and one of them will add 150 damage. The [DMG] modifier scales with tactical consoles so DMGx4 together with epic rarity for a full DMGx5 will yield some interesting results.

Anyways, there are a few traits that will actually add their % bonus on top of one another. I don't remember them all but I can say that the Pilot specialization starship trait, Pedal to the Medal, will apply its % after all other damage calculations. The Improved trait provides 20% damage bonus at full stacks. If you are a Temporal Agent and managed to unlock its superior version then I suspect it will provide an additional 10% for a full 30%.

For example, my weapon damage is something close to ~2200 with the Improved Pedal to the Medal. If you add another 10% to that my damage should reach up to ~2450ish something. Working toward completing the Pilot specialization is something I can strongly recommend.
