Anytime you need information, check Reddit, it's the REAL official forum for STO. This forum gets the news after every other medium despite being listed as the 'official' forum.
Acknowledgement that it was something nefarious only lends encouragement for a repeat performance, by the perpetrators or others with a similar motivation. Acknowledgement that it was not something nefarious encourages everyone who wants to run them down, in jest or otherwise.
Why give aid & comfort in either of those situations?
They told us relevant information in a timely manner, so this was handled in pretty short order. It is telling, perhaps, that they seem to be getting better at it. I recall them dropping off for no reason for like 12 - 24 hours not all that long ago.
Explaining server crashes is a bad business, and is almost never done.
And here's a little illustration of why:
Alice the community rep: "Rollback segment of one of our databases got corrupted, sorry." Bob the customer: "What kind of gobbledygoook is that? Are you making this up? I wanna REAL ANSWERS!" Mallory the hacker: "Aha! Their DB uses rollback segments, that means Oracle, and that... Is very useful indeed." (strokes his evil goatee)
There are many servers in the farm that hosts STO. They all need to be running the same code so that everyone that logs in to play, plays the same. If one or more of those servers ended up with corrupt code they would have to resynch them so that they were all the same again.
Within the setup there are servers that handle the login ('connection to login server has been lost', etc.) if one or more of them experienced the problem as indicated above, you would need to do the same as above, to ensure the Account database was uniform throughout.
The idea behind a farm is to spread the load of activity out across multiple 'work units' and to ensure good performance and to ensure consistency regardless of which server you were directed to.

Me and @artan42 were using part of the server to power our new and improved ... "Slime Fast Marmite" factory. However there were a few mishaps and we discovered marmite conducts electricity.
I can still taste it. I don't think the taste will ever go away.
Now he knows how we all feel about his posts.
( kidding, you jar of sticky goodness )
@crashdragon You like licking my posts hoping the taste will remain with you forever? A bit odd, but to each their own.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Thank you Guys for all those who made the joke threads it was hilarious, I loved it, also thanks you for those who took the time & effort to theorise on a seriouss note what might have happened & those who also explained in detail, thank you all for your participation it's greatly appreciated.
I feel sorry for those with the sarcasm note, if you feel that way about the developers & the game perhaps it's time to take your bussiness elsewhere.
May have been localized. I browsed a bit on google and found something saying it was down, which was consistent with my kick out and not being able to log back again.
It's working, that's what matters. Just lost a MUI instance, but...
The responses from some are typical from those so don't worry about it.

I have had no crashes either. Just the periodic 'Connection to the Login Server has timed out' when switching Characters taking me to the credentials screen instead of the Character Select Screen. Entering the Password results in the Character Select Screen almost assuredly. That has been happening on and off for just over two or so months.
DirectX crashes have been fewer and occur mostly in busy zones like in orbit at ESD.

Officially.. it was a 'server resynch.'
Whatever the hell that means.

Have a good day.
blah blah blah
Actually most of the rest of us were fine with not knowing. You weren't. Maybe YOU should take YOUR business elsewhere.
Nice try at a passive aggressive "last word".
See, now you know EXACTLY what happened...
OH!! so much LOVE here I feel like passing out!!!!!
