I believe the PC and console versions are wholly separate.

really thats pretty crappy so they expect there long term players if they play on console to fork out the cash all over again

i honestly dont see this move into consoles succeeding/going very far atleast have cross platform play between all 3 or between ps4/xbox one to bump up numbers its easy to do so look at rocket league

They expect to get new customers to start playing STO on consoles, no expectations for old customers to switch, they couldnt care less about how you play. Its a personal decision where you play. No one is forcing you to rebuy anything.

    I feel deja vu.

If you're already playing on PC why would you want to play on a console in the first place? The jump to consoles is only to get players who don't own PCs or don't game on PCs into the game and therefore earn more money.

i dunno cause all my friends own consoles and opening up to playing with them is a wonderful thing when i cant get them to come play on the pc because they own piece of junk laptops that cant run STO? i tend to think thats a pretty good reason

Nothing stopping you from creating a console account to play with your friends. Although, it looks like Xbox One and PS4 accounts will not be able to play with each other.

Sony and Microsoft want their cut of the action and having PC players playing with their console friends will make Sony and Microsoft lose out on their cut.
  • neodac1neodac1 Member Posts: 16 Arc User
i would argue the opposite since having them talk to each other would encourage more of the current pc players to hype up the release to their console only friends and try to pull them in having them able to cross play would create a much bigger market as long as you need a seperate account to pplay on xbox and ps4 being able to play with the pc folks only increases their marketability it does not reduce their cut it increases it because people who otherwise would "pass" on the game because they cant play with their friends who "wont convert" because they are going to lose all the money they dumped into the game on pc would instead jump on at said pc players urging

The servers are separate in part so that those of us who have been playing for years, and purchased or earned all sorts of things the console players can't get yet (and in some cases never will), can't lord it over the poor newbies on their XBoxes and PS4s. Instead, if we use those platforms at all, we start off more or less equal - well, except for the part where we've played through the stories and the STFs already, and know what's going to happen and how it should be handled...

It is sort of a shame, and I'll admit that I did initially think that I might actually play STO on console, before it became clear that doing so would mean creating an entirely new account with no access to the account that I've been using all these years.

However, with all due respect to console fans, I'll also say that I maintain the opinion that a PC will play STO better. There isn't a console in existance that will come even close to matching what a decent gaming PC can do.

Maybe, but do you actually own a decent gaming PC? ;) If not, the console might still be better.

Gaming PCs tend to be more expensive than consoles. Consoles will be entirely separate from PC users, it looks like they have been creative in the Console UI controls but they can never hope to compete with a macro driven gaming PC keyboard and mouse, so all console users would be at a major disadvantage when playing against PC users. Having said that PvP is so poorly supported in this game and PvE is so mind numbingly easy that it may not make any real difference if they could play together.

ESO went to consoles some time ago and at the time they allowed PC users to port over their entire account to the console server, you could never go back though, however the decision was widely praised.

Yes a reasonable gaming PC will already beat any console on the market for frame rate, resolution and interoperability whilst a top end machine will be streets ahead for a long time to come as upgrading gaming rigs are what it's all about, but this all comes at a high cost. I don't know if console users will be able to chat on gaming channels, possibly, afterall we can talk to people playing Neverwinter, so that may be something to consider.

Not quite true. With the 2 Consoles, that 's just 2 'graphics cards' for Cryptic to accommodate......how many PC graphic's cards are there?? Console's framerate will be stable and in alot of cases on busy maps, should be without any frame-rate drop-off. That's the beauty of Consoles. You know it's limitations and can work around it without much of a problem. With PC's and it's practically 'infinte' number of possible configurations, it's impossible beyond belief to guarantee the same.

Also, you even being to compare the spec's of consoles as inferior or superior to any PC beyond the obvious. Consoles are dedicated machines. They're not running Spotify, Anti-Virus, iTunes, Word, Printer Protocols and all the other programs that people have loaded whilst running a GPU/CPU intensive game such as STO, so they do out perform PC's with not just similar 'specs', but in a large number of cases PC's with seemingly 'superior' specs.

And this is coming from someone who's been gaming since the 70's, sold and built PC's and play games on both Console and PC!

I would make the switch (if it would be allowed) because i'm sure my ps4 will put out better graphics then my 4 year old laptop.
Not too mention I'd be playing on a 60" from the comfort of my awesome La-Z-Boy.
But I guess I'll have to stick with PC for STO.
Certainly not going to start over from scratch. No way. Even though I'd probably find it more enjoyable...Then again, the controller layout may or may not be to my liking, after so long of using the point and click tray.
    (Non-Macro player here)
I prefer selecting my abilities on the fly. Even though its harder to pilot while doing so.

But that is one major advantage I see to playing on console (at least it is in my case. This would not apply for people who have awesome computers).

No. I am not planning on moving to console ever. Never liked consoles and never will. I'm not a kid anymore (haven't been for almost half a century). I'm quite certain this was done to bring in new players.

I already have my PC HDMI'd up to my 60" TV and play from my couch...
I personally see no advantage to going with a console.

2K, Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, EA, LucasArts, Trion Worlds all link their accounts with the console accounts so that all purchases made on the pc show up on the consoles. And we're supposed to believe that this isn't possible in this game?

The lag time between PC's and Console's for updates seems to be the biggest hurdle according to PWE/Cryptic.

Perhaps at some point in the distant future They might let you do it?

But you will still not be able to use everything your PC toon has, if it's not available on the console.

And that could be a game breaker if your PC version# doesn't match the Console version#.

    Tried that myself Dave.
It was weird, had to look over my laptop screen to see the television. Maybe if I had a wireless keyboard it might have worked out better ?
I just found it easier to use the laptop screen since it's right in front of me.

But if I were playing on PS4 I could play with no viewing obstructions.
And be comfortable in my La-Z-Boy.

I tried bringing the La-Z-Boy to my computer desk... it doesn't work. Desk sits too high. It's like I'm riding one of those choppers with raised handle bars lol.

Lag time is not an issue when it comes to basic unlock data from a purchase server. This argument is irrelevant entirely. There are exactly 0 excuses to not implement this for the console other than blatant greed on the part of the shareholders. They can easily implement this.

We're not talking about anything special here folks, a simple connection to the same purchase servers to let the console know that yes you unlocked said item on this date and can download it to your character's inventory is all we're talking about here. It's not that difficult from either a programming or database standpoint.

The consoles are launching with the game only patched up to Season 11.5.
How can that be "irrelevant" with the multitude of things added to the game since then????

Shareholders do not dictate whether or not accounts can be ported over from PC to console or vice versa. They do not have such minute control over the operations of a gaming company. At best they can only influence executive management on the overall strategy for future growth within the company. On top of that PWE is a private company so there are absolutely no shareholders.

In addition to the lag when content is released on the console compared to the PC, the main goal of STO console is to tap a potential player base that they never had access to... console gamers. Since everyone will start fresh, that gives Cryptic the opportunity to streamline the database of items and ships that the STO console will not have because of timed exclusives such as event ships. The exception would be ships that were used in main story mission such as the 2014 Anniversary Event Dyson Science Destroyer (but I am sure the T5 DSDs will be offered in the C-Store) and the T6 Kobali Samar. Less data in the database means it is more manageable.

Whether you like it or not, Cryptic has made it's decision. There will be no account transfers. Perhaps that can change in the future when another person becomes STO's EP.
  • kjwashingtonkjwashington Member Posts: 2,529 Arc User
Honestly, I doubt that the console versions are going to be a success. Most console gamers are used to playing finished games. Since STO is and always has been a work in progress, that means a lot more bugs, etc. than they are used to. Console gamers that try STO will most likely play until their first major bug, then stop and proceed to the next game.

We're talking about purchases in the Cstore not items retrieved from box events.
This is real time money we're talking about here not some item found from RNG or someone getting lucky from a key. I would think that people who have spent money on the game would be more receptive.

Well, I all I can say is that based on one of Priority One Podcast interviews, Steve Ricossa stated he wanted the consoles to be a leveled playing field meaning everyone starts off with the same thing which is essentially nothing. That was the business decision they decided to go with. Sure, there are other games that allowed for a one time account transfer from PC to console which in simplistic terms means that it is not a technological hurdle to copy copy data from the PC database over to the console database. But that was their business decision.

Probably the best advice I can give you is to start a petition (not in the forum) on a site like change.org and then provide the results to Crypt. If you can collect enough signatures, then perhaps that can influence Cryptic to offer the option to port over accounts from PC to console.
