The station is rotating, so they can't use its left. The game doesn't know what way you'll be facing, so it can't give directions relative to you. It has to use galactic directions, which will be in north/south/east/west/up/down.

Not Really, the game should used galactic coordinates when giving directions or commands. If not your orders would read
example: Captain Kirk Your are order to " Go to X star turn right goto X nebula turn left goto x star which is below the galaxy....."
When they change the graphics in STO they moved the Galactic Center, by all account the center runs straight through Sol. Sorry Dev.
Want some realism. Buy your own rocket and go to space your self. A game with ftl ships, antimatter missile flying like nobodys business and no death even vaporized by ship explosion and you are going on about a easy way to describe direction.

Glen: All right, now the sun sets in the East, right?
Mitch: No! The sun sets in the West.
Glen: That's if you're in the East, but we are way out West now, so we are past where the sun sets.
Mitch: You can't be past where the sun sets, and if you think you can, then I am directly South of an idiot!
Phil: Which is down!
Mitch: Right!

The simpler method - Imagine a circle (360 degrees) around your ship. A heading of 270 degrees is "west." Imagine another circle that bisects your ship from bow to stern on a vertical centerline axis, also with 360 degrees. This is the part that comes after the word "mark" in every Trek you've ever watched. One points the bow left to right (& vice versa) the other up & down (yeah, I know - more confusion about "up" & "down" in space). The good news is you can now navigate anywhere the universe.
>go west
YOU GO WEST
>look
YOU SEE A SPACESHIP
>enter spaceship
THAT IS NOT A COMMAND
>go onto spaceship
THAT IS NOT A COMMAND
>board spaceship
YOU BOARD THE SPACESHIP

>take holo
YOU TAKE THE HOLO
>shake holo
YOU SHAKE THE HOLO blah blah something about snow
>throw holo at Sulu
THAT IS NOT A COMMAND
>throw holo at Uhura

>throw holo at Berryman
THAT IS NOT A COMMAND
>throw holo west
YOU THROW THE HOLO WEST IT HITS UHURA IN THE FACE
There really isnt, compass directionals are polar based, no magnetic north in space so there would have to another way to refer to direction in space if you needed to. In Star Trek they do use "headings" though like naval ships but has to be based on something else that earth style map navigation. Also they have spatial coordinates on an X, Y, and Z axis.
Edit: but as to why its in game? Idk, dev messed up or wanted a fool npc who was trollin'?
Which also does not make sense, heading in naval parlance is an indication of direction relative to a map coordinate system...... 000 being "North". Cardinal coordinates do not imply need for magnetic north/south and can simply refer to general directions in the mapping system.

I wasn't asking what direction is west for an honest answer about the mini map.

Port and starboard only reference things in relative direction of a ship.
