I love it when the developers do things like this! It shows the hard work that goes into the game. I for one, appreciate the hard work! Keep up the production Cryptic! Once I get enough shekels, I will throw a few in the pot for STO.

Time travel and glass-cannon ships hurt my head and is NOT what Trek is about. Trek is exploration, becoming better as a species, and gaining scientific knowledge while holding on to the traditions that got us where were are.

Always love taking a peek behind the scenes and how the design team thinks when putting ships together. Interesting idea to take inspiration from a jellyfish (see first pic for example) or a cephalopod (Nautilus), but it did pan out; big time
Due to the discrepancy of style between the 23rd century ships and the 26th century ships, individual parts are not interchangeable, however, the entire ship can be swapped between the 23rd century and 26th century visuals.

That also answers the question that's been asked by people for a while  And it's logical. The two styles are just too far apart for a proper kitbash.

My biggest favorite from the lineup is the Sagittarius  Kinda like an Eclipse and the Ent-J mixed together.

That does answer the big question on styles - but I love this sort of blog. I didn't immediately thematically link the 26th to the 23rd ships (the Nautilus obscures the trend a little) but I can definitely see it.

The 'design lineage' across these really comes through. Big fan of the Paladin!

Can't wait until they get to the Universe Class, Enterprise J. I expect that will be a Tier 9 ship with 10 forward and rear weapons.
it's sheer size alone would make it unstoppable.

If flying Scimitars taught me anything, it's that sheer size constantly leads to stops. :p

I'm actually somewhat relieved that these new ships aren't going to be 'one upping' previous ships released in terms of size. I, for one, am getting a bit disgruntled at the trend of new ships being physically larger than the older ones. Though, I fly a Paradox, which is absurdly huge for what it does in-game. Lol.

Here's hoping that the Galaxy class won't be reduced to a 'tough little ship' in the future... :p

Compared to the Enterprise-J, everything 25th century Starfleet/Republic/KDF have are "tough little ships" at best

After a quick google-fu I stumbled into this here
Here's how it looks next to a Galaxy (pic drawn up based on images and available specs)

That's roughly 3.2km right there. With the Jupiter, ~1.5 is the best we've got so far.

This becoming a playable ship? Don't think so. The Scimitar, Tarantula, the Iconian Vonph, even the Jupiter. These are all pushing it as far as ship size go. A ship like the Ent-J? Have to shake my head at that. While we cannot rule out an eventual encounter with it, it's not exactly player ship material, from the sheer size alone.

Which is why I think it was a good idea to introduce ships that are scaled down, even though Starfleet's 26th century tech could allow larger ships without sacrificing durability/function and space stations that can accomodate them.

And that's just Starfleet! Who knows what the Voth will come up with by the 26th c. Now those guys do love building big -- as far as ships go. Installations like the Iconian/Solanae Dyson Spheres still uber anything ^^

I love the imaginative description of what life on 26th-century ships is like. Turning walls transparent at one's leisure, no more holodecks (and therefore no more holodeck malfunctions), that "energy lake" sounding thing. Awesome ideas!

Close encounters of the third kind. Took me awhile to decipher his acronym.
Movie from 30 years ago with Richard Dreyfus and i believe Wilford Brimley was in it too.
They have still shots from it on the art work it appeared.

How much of that will we get to see in STO, though, I wonder? :)

Who knows? Maybe we'll get something onboard the Ent-J. Or maybe on those unique temporal ship bridges they mentioned.

Awesome! The thing is the size of a damn fleet of Galaxies.

    Uhh... Right...

Point is, in the shows a Galaxy class is a sizable beastie easily standing out in a fleet of ships. In STO, not so much. And I really don't like manuvering those absurdly large ships. (One of the reasons I don't fly a Scimitar, by the way.)

I know that as technology progresses ships will enevitably become 'bigger and better' but there has to be a practical limit to how large a ship can be. I don't even know where to start with the Ent-J, whoever designed that monstrosity must not have put much thought into it...
  • officerbatman81officerbatman81 Member Posts: 2,761 Arc User
Wouldnt Capt Archer inevitably alter the future he saw simply by occupying that space and observing it, even if he didnt report back to Admiral Forest what he saw. If fact iirc didnt it get changed where he was trapped in the future with a destroyed earth or wherever he was and that daniels guy was killed or injured or something.....im really foggy on my Ent.

Anyways, if B2TF taught us anything the future got altered so the Enterprise J may have not had been existed then yet.

Like i said, just a fictional ship.
  • officerbatman81officerbatman81 Member Posts: 2,761 Arc User
In fact......with us doing all that time traveling "now" in the future during the Temporal Cold War the future can and will be altered and we can change everything.

    I really hate Daniels.
  • orion0029orion0029 Member Posts: 1,122 Bug Hunter
That fictional ship argument could be copy-pasted into a reason for Cryptic to not make a Galaxy Dreadnought.

A shame, I really wanted one of those...

    Doug Drexler designed the Enterprise-J.
And if ya don't know who he is, turn in your Trek Membership Card and read this...
    http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Doug_Drexler

Also, it's a Galaxy Hopping Starship, that's why it's so big.
It's a really, Really, REALLY BIG Traveling City in space.

Read this to see just how much thought he DID put into it...

Didnt it only appear like 3 seconds on either a view screen or window to be a teaser?

Why is there so much attention on it now here? I dont get it.
