I'm kinda of the opinion a toggle would be letting the UI/FX designers off the hook when the problem is the FX are over-done and not informative. I don't want no information, I want the information delivered in a useful and intuitive way...

But other people do want no information.

I couldn't care less about the bazillion buffs and debuffs everything and everyone has on. The long rows of tiny icons are more than enough. I'd rather look at the actual ships than a mess of "informative" VFX highlighting trivial things.

I find them useful, myself, and if I had the option, I would leave them on. But I'm almost always in favour of people having more options, and I can see why people might choose differently from me, if they had a choice.

I think the option would benefit in a few ways, for the first it would def improve performance for some low end PCs and the second is it would benefit people who like to play immersively.

Why of course. Myself personally would probably turn it off and on depending on the environment.

I really question if it's practical to pull off though.

Ha, yeah that's the only issue is if it is possible for the devs to be able to do that.

And without breaking the game or causing other bugs as someone mentioned. I'd rather have a working game and put up with the effects than a broken one.

I voted yes. Too much eye candy is too much. When you have a full group in an STF, all throwing debuffs, it gets to be such a jumble that you simply cannot see what is what, regardless of emersion level. Even an ancient game like Everquest had an affects slider built in, so that you could at least lower the intensity of spell effects.

All I see is people explaining their 'opinion' on why it shouldn't be on/off option and then getting replied with an explanation on why that is wrong from the 'yes' side....

I said No because, why break something that is not broken. Now to wait for someone to tell me why I'm wrong.

    Cheers,

    Comrademoco

If it's done on the client side, how can it be broken for you should I have settings turned off or just lowered on my end? Already, that isn't the case, because we have people with all ranges of power for their PC, playing with people that own top end rigs. No disparity when they have settings low so their Intel 5000HD can play the game, and your $600 NVIDIA card is running at max without breaking a sweat.

Its easier to see combat effects on your ship than keeping track of those little boxes, it's more obvious. Did you memorize all the pictograms? I haven't. And in the heat of combat i aint looking down at that mess.

thats why it s called an OPTIOn you can still CHOOSE

i dotn get why ppl r against more OPTIONS

I avoid certain traits and abilities just because the ship effects are hideous and/or extremely annoying. This would solve a major problem for me.

Yes, so true! I actually don't use certain abilities because of all the eye candy they cause.

The below image is just an minor small example of how the ship effects look, they get very laggy in big battles not to mention you lose immersion when all that effect galor is going on... I think there should be an option to turn that off. Anyway what do you guys think?
    (image snipped)
Choice is good. As long as putting in the option doesn't disrupt anything in the game, do it.

As soon as you say "there's no need for", you're on the wrong track. That's an individual decision.

Now, "the devs have already investigated and it would horribly complicate the code and $%^# up the game badly" would be a perfectly valid reason not to do it.

Otherwise, your "there's no need" could be perfectly served by simply ignoring the option when it gets added.

A thousand times yes! I don't care if everyone else then has an advantage over me by reading my visual cues, after a certain point all that technicolor space vomit interferes with my ability to see my ship and navigate. I want to see no traits, BO abilities, no console activation, nothing. I only even want to see my shields when they take a hit.

Just make it optional, and everyone should be happy.

If I could fix anything in this game, this option would be it. I get no lag from it, it's just ugly as sin. I don't recall seeing this glowing garbage all over the ships in the TV show, I prefer immersion over uninformative laser light shows. While you're at it, let us shut off the the engine trails.

Most games have an option to turn down or turn off particle effects. Does STO not have such an option?

What the people who said "No" are trying to say is that we should just remove all FX effects if we don't like it which is stupid because I love the beautiful visual FX of the beams firing and the shields taking hits and what not. Even if I did turn them down it wouldn't remove them at all, only make them look uglier. The only thing I don't like is all the notification ship effects that take place during debuff, buff, BO abilities, console activations and others.

I definitely think we should have an option. I have the same problem in large battles like the battlezones where every single effect causes a light show so hideous that I can't see my ship either, much less the enemy ships.

It's like a disco ball that a nullifier can't nullify.

How about on option to go totally retro with graphics?

Low polygon wire frame graphics like the Atari Star Wars and Battlezone arcade games from the 1980's?

Arguing that we should have the option to turn them off. Not arbitrarily removing everyone's visuals. There should be no reason anyone is bothered by my not having to see it, as long as they are still free to see everything if they like.

Exactly. We're arguing for the option to turn them off ourselves, not to have them turned off for everyone. What's wrong with that?

If there was a hard sci-fi mode to this game, it would involve shutting it all off at the servers.

You're part of the game universe and the game effects are events happening in that universe. Deal with it.

But STO is supposed to be MY story in the Trek universe. Game effects like we have are not part of Star Trek, and my ability to turn them off or at least be able to reduce their visibility on a slider, would have zero impact on you, because your client would show whatever effects and to what degree that you wished.
