Possibly VERY spoilery NPC popping up on 25th Century ESD

in Tribble - Bug Reports
I was running around ESD and happened to spot a very unexpected and probably very spoilery character sitting in the little lounge area to the far left of the Spacedock NPCs, near the turbolifts. When I clicked on him, it identified him by his correct name. I ran around seeing if any other anomalous characters were running around, but didn't see any. When I came back to where I'd seen him, he'd been replaced by a standard NPC engineer or some such. So imagine my surprise when I went into the Exchange and saw this: http://imgur.com/HYqHZzA

Best I can tell, he's randomly popping up in place of NPCs who beam in and out occasionally. Super excited to see him and wondering what it means, but I suspect he's not supposed to be there.

    I don't know how or why he's in the game, but it's him. Clicking on him the first time I saw him confirmed his name. Didn't get a screenshot though.

    Interesting to note, on some instances the shuttle on The Taurean Affair is named 0718

    ...okay, that is definitely a JJverse uniform and not a TOS one.

    I'm really curious as to what this means (if anything) for the upcoming story.

    That's really surprising. I think I remember hearing that they had created some assets based on the first JJ Star Trek film before it was off limits, but that was way back before beta, and this guy wasn't in the first JJ movie, he was in Into Darkness, so that means that he has to be a fairly recent development (or maybe they had developed some Into Darkness stuff that was again scrapped by Paramount saying no and somehow these NPC's found there way into the "general population").

    Edit to add:
    It's worth noting that this can't be, or probably isn't a design to tie into the new film Star Trek Beyond, because the uniforms in that film have changed from the ones in the first two reboot films.

    if cryptic was trying to imitate the cyborg from ID, they did a terrible job...his skin is PURPLE, not the normal human fleshtone shown in the movie​​

    The number 0718 was also used on the TOS looking Constitution-class model seen in one of the deleted scenes from "Into Darkness", I wonder if this is a hint at a possible launch date on 18th July:

    oddly enough when i landed on taurus 2 i could select the shuttle on the left and first thing i saw were the number "0718" and then "engineer" afterwards.

    if you notice as well that 0718 is actually a human with augmentations to his eyes, so cryptic may want to remove the head ridges.

    They probably don't want to copy the character exactly, so as avoid any conflict with Paramount.

    But perhaps this is a hint that JJ-Trek is coming into the game at some time in the future.

    You do realize those to statements contradict each other. If Cryptic managed to get permission to use JJtrek (Which at this point I still say is unlikely), there is no reason to worry about conflict with Paramount. ;)

    I know it's not always a popular design, but if it had TOS, refit, and Excalibur kitbash options wouldn't it be a win all around?

    But yeah, seeing as how JJverse content is now apparently allowed in STO, it seems to me that a playable JJ-prise is inevitable.
