I will (reluctantly) roll a Temporal Agent 'toon, albeit a Klingon. I already have 6 alt's (no main), so a 7th is beyond anything I ever wanted to do, but my fleet & account will benefit, so I'll bite the bullet once again. My KDF fleet is only at lvl 45, so it makes more sense to double down on KDF than FED (my FED fleet is already lvl 56).
Which is assuming by temporal agent toon they don't mean the "new" TOS captains...
I'm a one toon guy. I'm hoping for an independent Gorn faction, or at least a Gorn that can join the Fed. I've read in fan fiction that the Gorn Captain and the crew that Kirk defeated pledged themselves to him.
If there is a Romulan Star Empire track I'd seriously consider making a Romulan toon; honestly I'd be really excited. Those helmets were really cool.
The term expansion is a little confusing to me as the last one (Delta Rising) built end game content and the one before (Romulan Republic) added a subfaction. This expansion seems like an expanded story, or separate anniversary game. I wonder if they would invest resources into adding to this expansion after it has run it's course. It would be nice but I do not think it would happen. I'd like this to benefit my main also.
No. They didn't create any content for me to play.
Jack Emmert: "Starfleet and Klingon. ... So two factions, full PvE content." Al Rivera hates Klingons Star Trek Online: Agents of Jack Emmert All cloaks should be canon.
Not sure, wait and see. If this ends up turning in to something that will only receive new content in the future and our 2410 characters are being forcibly sidelined so that we will invest more blasted money into a character that I don't want. I will be seriously pissed off. If this is to be exactly like Delta Rising and the character and once it's over we don't have to do a blasted thing with it after. Then I will just grind through it, finish the content to get the account unlocks and watch the character collect dust.
Cryptic seems to think everybody likes making multiple characters. Guess what guys? Not all of us do. People like me make one and stick with it. That beyond your thinking? Tough.

I just what to highlight this for those following along with forum comments that this was directed at the Original Series of Star Trek.
It's perfectly fine not to have interest in something, but implicitly claiming that the cardies have a bigger following isn't helping you get your point across. Even if there isn't a huge amount of TOS content in the game already [hence the expansion] there's a sub-cultural history founded on TOS to cultivate interest among STO players. We've all [presumably] seen the show before.
Yeah, I've seen TOS before. I thought it was laughably cheesy and casually sexist '60s junk and undeserving of its hype.
Now the TOS movies, those were damn good.
And then someone down the road will come on saying that about TNG or DS9.......those cheesy 80s effects! And to be fair you should check out TOS remastered. Much better.

Honestly there wasn't much TV or Movie that came out of the 60s and 70s that wasn't laced with cheese, bad writing moments, and casual sexism

Sorry if I come off as gruff on that. But I don't see how people like to throw away time investing in that many characters. That's not fun.
So I'll ask in a bit more of a polite way. Do we expect to see this as the future of STO and this will be the only way we get content? People who have invested a considerable amount in characters, fleets, gear and so on are getting a bit of a slap in the face. If this is going to be exactly like DR, then I won't mind in the least. I'll run through it if it gives me something toward my main. Otherwise, I'm not starting over again and again. I don't intend to just abandon my main and all that it has earned in 6 years of play on one character.
I will hold my judgement then. But I don't like the feeling of what is coming, IMO.
Of course i will play the content.
To avoid it would be missing out on parts of the game created for us to see and experience, i for one look forward to revisiting the original series ingame, in this its 50th anniversary..
Do we expect to see this as the future of STO and this will be the only way we get content? People who have invested a considerable amount in characters, fleets, gear and so on are getting a bit of a slap in the face.
Let me flip that around on you, just as a way to try and play devil's advocate. What exactly is that character of yours doing? Grinding daily reputation? Running the same STFs you've run for months/years? And given all the goodies and ships and toys and upgrades, exactly what new content can anyone develop that you won't plow through with ease in an hour or two?
With all that, how is a new character so much of a sin?
One of my favorite things to do in this game is to level an alt, and in doing so go out of my way to make him follow a different build as a previous character.
I have 16 level 60 characters, most fully developed. I have 17 characters still in the works.
I don't think there is a right way or wrong way to pay this game. If you are having fun that's all that matters.

It has nothing to do with abandonment. My first character is my best geared even now, but I have a dozen more with decent, though inferior gear. Melati's gear is good enough that I don't NEED to constantly work towards making it better. This frees me to work on others.
I already have 9 chars, all 3 careers for each faction. I don't have the time to play all my current chars porperly, creating a new char isn't exactly what I would like to do.
I actually love the retro-aesthetics and the futuristic outlook of the sixties that are a part of TOS, so I'm looking forward to 'Agents of Yesterday' making me more motivated for STO, since things as of late have been quite stale.
If all goes smoothly, there's a chance that unlike the train-wreck that was 'Delta Rising', this could in fact turn out to be "The best expansion ever and the players love it!" for real. At least it has a lot of initial potential given the theme and the 50-th anniversary of Star Trek.
Agreed.
For my part, i will view at it as a new chance to get a real Star Trek feel to STO.
I just hope, they stay away from forcing us to slaughter an x amount of enemies on every occasion in favour of a less militaristic approach. Hey, they could even introduce a element called "sense of wonder" (IDK if someone can remember ). So to me it's like a second chance for the devs to prove they have learned something from their mistakes and finally create a real Star Trek experience for a change.
If it is done well, i could very much imagine to make TOS my main faction.
(i always liked TOS retro style)
"...'With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured...the first thought forbidden...the first freedom denied--chains us all irrevocably.' ... The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. I fear that today--"
- (TNG) Picard, quoting Judge Aaron Satie
I'm pumped. I haven't been this excited for anything STO-related since LoR dropped. The idea of a TOS mini-faction is downright brilliant, the perfect way to celebrate Trek's 50th in MMO form, and is just plain a fun concept in its own right.
I do have some pretty big issues with it, mind you, but it should be telling about just how much I love the idea that these issues, despite being glaring, aren't nearly enough to dampen my excitement. TOS Expansion? Hell yes I'm playing it.
I have 6 mains and I certainly didn't plan on making a 7th. I would point out that my Delta recruit is my second favorite character, slightly edging my Caitian. But I wouldn't miss this for anything so time for lucky 7.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
None of the answers really matched my view so chose the closest: Not really. Why?
New 'content' = story arc.
Content that's just a rehash of what we already have = spec tree, rep...
Oh and this lovely lot for new captains:
lv1-60...again (and this is just level cap).
9 reputations (including the new one).
5 specialisations (3 + 2*0.5 + the new one) - basically levelling 95 times (45 of which are 50+ levelling bands)!
The 11 doffing trees.
The 3 admiralty trees.
The 7 R&D crafting trees.
Reacquiring any items such as traits, consoles, abilities you name it because it's all bind on equip. Account bound items you can at least move but character bound you're SOL. This also means ship masteries, anything that's character bound.
Federation ONLY ships in the pack so KDF and Romulans are SOL.
*Not sure what else I've missed but wouldn't be surprised if I've left something else off.*
Everything except the new story arc is a recycle of the content you've already done so if you don't want to do it now are you going to again? Even what is considered new is simply more grind with another coat of paint. Let's say for the sake of argument Cryptic is generous and gives us more PVE for the new reputation. That means more queues which will have heightened activity but the rest of the queues even more dead.
For those that have old characters like me we can enjoy account transferable items like R&D but for new people or character specific things...is anyone really going to stick it out for that long or care? How many Delta Recruits are active these days? I wouldn't know as I log in for the bear minimum of new stuff to complete then log out so maybe the game's filled with them. Anyone who wants to do the above is probably going to want to keep up on their older characters and let's say they have at least 1 character and let's say it's Fed. Do you do KDF or Romulan? Why? Cryptic's basically saying it's not worth doing anything but Fed and if you have a Federation already that leaves choosing a different profession and are you really prepared to roll a new chararacter now after all this time just for a new profression when you could have done so sooner?
After 6 years I've succumb to having such a negative view of Cryptic that I think I'd find fault in whatever they do. I feel the game is all about lockboxes and ships/c store but no new content to play them. I asked friend who has all but stopped playing STO who was casual to begin with) and he pretty much said there was no fun in STO. More ships but nothing new to do with them. Do more damage, grind more dil and ec for what? To do the same content over and over. I think the only thing that keeps me in game is I still enjoy STO if I stick to just completing the new stuff/event/grind 1-4 times for my main characters then log off. I've not touched my Delta Recruit since I got them to lv 54 so I haven't even bothered to get him to lv60, just use him for doing Tour the Galaxy which I've now stopped. I expect a lot of people will reroll but will only do it for the account rewards; grind to level 60 in a few days then make them a farming character. For anyone not wishing to regrind...sorry replay a new character you have only the new story arc to satisfy you, that is your expansion content.
This is not the way, I feel, to make a successful game. This is recycling content players are struggling to do in the first place for their existing characters and a smattering of grind mechanics and ships isn't new, it's just more of what we got that will keep people active for a while then dwindle. What happened to going back to being explorers? We never got PVP which players asked for and I didn't even want it, I wanted accolades but those have all but gone except for do new mission and ones you can only get from lockboxes. Has anyone stopped to consider that since 2405 when lore began we've fought...well I won't list but a lot of enemies. In 5 years we've beaten even the Borg, the Undine and the Iconians!! Now we're going down the rabbit hole of time travel. When is it going to end? I've joked about us fighting the second great tribble war and the Federation secretary to the president asking if we could get a quick fight in with the Q before we fight gaseous anomalies.
Wow...this has gone on...sorry. I wish I had a better view of STO, it's been great for much of the last 6 years but I just can't muster the energy to feel positive about this game. It's Star Trek, it's entertaining for short moments but I can't see how this is going to lead to a successful future. All they want is your money and will find the cheapest way possible at the cost of making a good game including making you redo existing content.

But all this is speculation.
If it's its own contained world with its own reps and content then hell yeah I'll play the TRIBBLE out of it.
If it's just a gimmick character that transfers to the "future" after the main story content is done then I'll pass.
There's too many games coming out the next few months that I'd rather not level up a new toon that ends up the same as the others.
