Strange request I know lol. But I have a bug where the game dims after I tab out. For some reason, if the game crashes, the bug goes away. But every PC restart resets the bug. >.> So does anyone know of a command to make it crash?
Did you try using task manager to end the process.
Sorry don't know any code to cause crashing. Although if you use the /renderscale command and set it to a crazy high number like 45 it might freak the game out and crash it. E.g put /renderscale 45 in the chat window.

I had an issue before where the game would play perfectly fine........but crashed when I chose to exit it. Click the exit button>game closed>Cryptic Error Report popped up.
How I solved my problem: I went into the Windows Firewall settings and manually added the 'Star Trek Online.exe' to the list and allowed it.
I laughed so hard when I read your title for this post.
Yeah it's quite an irregular request, but in my case crashing is one tactic I've often liked being able to do in some games, it's a great way to disappear on someone you'd rather not make some cheap excuse towards for why you need to leave when there is a visible difference between someone exiting the game or actually crashing XD

Go to options > display and tap the brightness bar and it will go back to normal
go to graphics and lower the slider for Render quality and maybe lower graphic detail
slider. that might fix the game crash but unfortunitly you will have to continue to tap
the brightness settings every time you alt tab.
for some reason the game switches to some sorta secondary game settings
when tabing. I tried to report this along time ago but even custom support
had no idea wtf i was talking about.

Thanks for that bit of info. I have the same problem and have been logging the character out and exiting that way. Your fix seems to be working fine for me now.
Don't do the renderscale command
.. Not a good idea... You might end up burning your GPU like I did....
I burnt my GPU playing STO as well, but I don't think anything in the game, including too high of a renderscale, was the cause, and more likely wear from heat and heavy long-term use despite keeping it clean, never overclocking/overvolting it, and blasting the fan on max or near max. Even asked the RMA contact whether such a game could cause hardware failure but they didn't respond and simply granted the lifetime warranty replacement.
Crashing using renderscale I think runs the risk of corrupting your videocard drivers, which then need to be reinstalled assuming nothing else got affected in Windows. It has happened to me but can't remember 100% if it was indeed triggered by renderscale, or just ordinary client crashes.
From my own experience i think the graphic slider settings is what causes the
game crashes. By default they are set on medium high so when you alt tab it will
switch to the slider settings. As to why i said lower the sliders settings. and when you
click on the brightness bar after alt tabbing it will switch back to your other graphic settings.
This is a bug from season 11 or earlier. Brightness goes wonky when you tab out and other apps appear brighter. I'm not convinced that STO is the root cause.
I've only had that dimming issue when using an HDTV as a monitor, and connecting with the HDMI port. For some reason, my computer doesn't treat data going through HDMI with the same priority as data going through the old SVGA monitor port. Now I use another computer and HDTV, and connect with SVGA (not an option on the brand-new one, for some reason), so no problem.
(you have to do the Dr. Strange hand motion for this to work)

I've been having the same issue with the display dimming. It looks like what's happening is the gamma settings are treated as if they are 1.00, even if you have them set differently (1.25 in my case). Going into my graphics settings, tweaking the gamma, then just cancelling seems to force some sort of graphics reload (message flashes at the bottom of the screen), then everything's back to normal.
I've found a workaround to avoid the problem altogether. If you run the game in fullscreen windowed mode, you can minimize it from the upper-right corner instead of using alt-tab to get to another app. The brightness bug doesn't seem to happen in this case.
Did you try the minimize button instead of tabbing out? I have problems with the brightness changing as well when I alt tab...but if I use the minimize button things stay normal.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power

Alt-tabbing was fine before, and it should be fine now. I'm not altering my habits to work around things that were fixed until they were broken.

Ill try that.
No good, needs to be a game crash.
Whats normal then?
You can also use smaller values like 0.5, but don't it will break the game

There is /quit but i doubt that will work

I did a long time ago. No one could make any sens out of it. It just showed up one day after a patch.
