They already have a comic book series set in the JJverse that follows a bunch of Academy cadets. I highly doubt they'd make a new show with the same premise.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
Wait...it's exactly like that thing. Sounds like someone picked up this old (failed) idea off of Memory Alpha, and made up a new/old rumor just to mess with peeps. *sigh*
Just as well, cause that storyline still sounds awful.
Sweet Jesus no! An Academy series could work if and only if is it with new characters. The format could work, because the academic structure would allow for graduations and new entrants, but it cannot work with the existing characters, because none of them attended the academy with each other. Such a 'concept' is simply forcing existing characters into new situations, and I believe would likely be the final nail in the coffin of the Trek franchise, as it would show a complete inability to do anything beyond reboots, revisions and prequels. A new series has to focus on new characters and new challenges...
That rumor is 4 months old now.
At least come up with some new ones...
smh

Oh, no, it's far older than that. Back when work was starting on the '09 movie, someone got some pics from the Starfleet Academy sets, and started claiming that a) the movie was going to focus on everyone at the Academy, and b) CBS was then going to start a series based on that. Folks were calling it Star Trek: Deep Space 90210.

I wouldn't put too much stock in this. At all.
