Can some network guy explain to me why the STO server randomly lags?

This has happened a couple of times these past couple of days, and I'm wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Are the STO servers just getting DDOS'ed or is my ISP routing me through a horrible bundle of connections?

I sincerely hope for the sake of the game that Cryptic's servers are not the problem here. I'm not quite sure why I get massive connection lag in a massive MMO game designed to handle hundreds of thousands of people.

Maybe trying pinging the patchserver (after Cryptic fixes the lag due to the ddos ofc).

Cryptic's servers are undergoing a DDoS attack right now, and since all their games are hosted on one server system, you attack one and you attack them all.

It sucks, and unfortunately there's not much we can do about it but wait until the d-bag gets bored and stops.

    Yes.

Would something like cloudflare or other similar DDOS protection tools work for an MMO? I also really appreciate the dev attention.

    Yes.

    x = y

    where
x is the number of persons trying to play STO
    and
y is the number of persons who'd love to put the beatdown on individual(s) behind this DDOS attack

Anyhow, thanks to Trendy for taking the time to reply, and keep us informed.

While I agree with the sentiment, lets not suggest violence - ever. I think you'd agree seeing the perp charged (and convicted), his computer access removed, jail time or grounded while being sent to his room with no dinner ;)

...says the guy whose name is DDoSjardins...

    Oh wait...

    Sorry, my bad.

Should this thread get the treatment the others like it already have?

I meant "beatdown" within the game. I did not and would not suggest RL violence. That would be morally reprehensible.

Weird thing for me is that Firefox also lags. Arc/STO pages seem to load for ages and most other US pages load very slow.

Sunday evening (yesterday) and late this afternoon, I got the red numbers, server not responding and got kicked out. Best thing to do is quit for a couple of hours.

Doing other things would require me interacting with real people. You are all figments of my imagination.

Question is, was it a DDOS, or a crapload of people hitting refresh around noon hoping to get the new ship stats that never came? :(

Well, I am stuck on Qo'Nos trying to turn in the daily lore exam...

Oh well... time to wander the Commonwealth Wasteland and comeback to STO later tonight or tomorrow evening...

      EDIT -

I got booted out and it seems STO is being patched right now.

Whats so bad, is some people only understand the "violence". I have witnesses that first hand, its useless, but in their mind, its o.k..

Welp, patch seems to have fixed things, for me anyways. On the violence note, sadly it is the only thing some people understand. In order to forcible confine someone, say jail time, violence is the most ready and able tool we have. Police need the threat/ability that force grants in order to do their jobs. Without violence there is no means of protection from violence. Its the ultimate catch 22.

I'm still laughing at the guy in Zone chat last night claiming it was Cryptic's servers being the problem et all. He couldn't justify why Cryptic would give warning over Twitter prior to the DDOS attacks other than "it is an excuse for their $%&£ servers". Oh my abs got sore after all that laughter! He wouldn't accept my offer of a fresh tin-foil hat though!

The problem, beauty, and elegance of violence as a solution is if it doesn't work you simply need to apply more violence until it does work.

The only violence needed in this case is having a Flowers by Ingrid van or three roll up to the kid's house and take one dependent off the parents' taxes and put them on everyone else's for a few years.

Or Cryptic could extend the very latency sensitive Omega Particle based event by however many days this TRIBBLE manages to collaterally damage it as his temper tantrums are coming close to coinciding with the once and done ship grind and the grind to get upgrades without paying an arm and leg for quality increases.

It's people like that, claiming that it was Cryptic's servers that are annoying, tbh. Servers are rarely the problem in a DDoS attack; the problem from a DDoS attack is almost always the DDoSer or the specific DDoSer squad (For example... Lizard Squad. :/ )

I'd just like to see the guy responsible for this go one round with Holly Holm, Ronda Rousey, or Cat Zingano.

And no, I'm not contradicting myself; UFC is sport, not violence.

Anyone else not able to log in at all right now? Haven't been able to for about 3 hours - so assuming DDOS still going on.

To be fair, I can see how some people would assume it's just another symptom of the persistent "regular" lag issues.

If there wasn't constantly latency issues with the game, people would probably be more apt to suspect something more is going on when this nonsense happens.
