Sh...t is gone. Right now there is a big server maintenance and let's say the student who is in control blows it and all your game sh..t is gone. Backup is also down the drain. The only thing there is are accounts, but whats on it ... no idea. What would you take for granted? How could they make it up for you?

I would settle with two LTS' and an instant level boost to 60 for every character created on these accounts. I have two accounts right now. With that I would happily start over.

If that were to actually happen, the game would probably die within a week or two.

if everything was gone, i would have no reason to stick around, the only thing holding me in place are the characters that i already got.

In this unlikely scenario I'd probably go back to playing football manager.

Even if they done a cstore unlock and gave you everything I just couldn't be arsed starting all over again.

Company would have their 'as*es' handed to them if that were to occur. Anyone running a large Data Center with 'Critical' Applications running on it would have more than adequate compensatory redundancies in place to allow recovery. It may take a week if that bad, but you could never have a situation as you describe.

Only an EMP or some other such event would bring total loss, and that would have to be widespread enough to affect Disaster Recovery Sites as well.

This says it all here. Also, the odds of a properly set up data center experiencing a complete catastrophic data loss are EXTREMELY slim. Its highly likely that there are at least 3 levels of redundancy set up across each of the various components.

Its not impossible, but the chances are so slim that it may as well be...

If everything was gone but the game was still available, I would just start over. In less than two weeks I'll be lvl 60 again.

Mildly DOOM'ish, been keeping my eye(s) on it already. Leaving open for now; but if it turns into full-blown DOOM-thread, it'll get Jan-Jutsu'd closed.

Honestly, I'd just start over. I tend to see gear and leveling as just a means to the end of enjoying the gameplay itself.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

I don't know... I might actually be grateful if this happened.

No excuses anymore to not get a life :D

(I spend way too much time in the game, on the Forum, thinking and dreaming about the game when I'm not doing the aforementioned things...)
  • risian4risian4 Member Posts: 3,711 Arc User
Then again, I might completely (and permanently) break down and cry a lot if my only source of joy in life were to disappear so perhaps it'd be best if this didn't happen.

    :p

Well, as has been said already, there are backups to all the data, and likely backups to the backups. With a company based in Cali and servers in Mass, there are likely copies in both places. So, if something big and bad enough were to happen to wipe out both locations, I think we'd have bigger worries than our STO accounts.

    DOOM!

Nonsense. This is simply not possible.

Well, personally, being geographically not that far from Boston, would probably be in range of whatever trouble might be going on and could count on disruption of power, internet, etc.

If that were to happen, how would I microwave my popcorn, or post to the forums here?

    DOOM, I say! DOOM!!!!!

Hm you may have a point.

We'd better make back-ups of the content of the entire internet and specifically its memes, the Forum, STO and get some solar-powered microwaves. Place a copy of each on each continent and inside some old Nokia cell phones. And perhaps I'll travel to and visit my own future self. It's probably empty so plenty of space to store these things :)
  • risian4risian4 Member Posts: 3,711 Arc User
Ohhh... I just realised... we may be able to do that in-game soon. If it still exists.

What if we transformed our own world, reshaping and merging it with the game so that our world becomes STO? Then we travel to the future while playing the game and we might just be able to store different copies of the game, which is the same as our world then, there.

Devs, please make it happen. We have to be prepared and I think this is the best way to do it.

I think I would just start over. Leveling up is the most fun part anyhow. AS someone else said, most of us would be level 60 again in two weeks, the hard part would be building up the stable of purple DOFFs; the Support assignments in the various nebulae and clusters are far less common than they once were.

Working up whatever they call those areas like Colonisation, Diplomacy, Colonial, Science, all that stuff would be a pain, and getting R&D back up to 15 again would take three months or so.

I would miss my Cochrane shotgun.

Getting all the fleet facilities back up to max Tier would be the really painful bit.

Nothing. I might give it a few weeks to return, but that's a lot of good gear and millions of ECs gone down the drain. If not, then I might have to simply do as I would do if I were shut out of the game permanently. Move on.

    I'd quit and uninstall.

To be honest between playing killing floor 2, fallout 4, replaying the mass effect trilogy (just got to 3 this morning) and planning a dark souls replay (dark souls 3 is out in a few months) there's not much keeping me playing sto.

I log on every couple of days to make sure my fleet has projects but other than that I don't have much motivation to play.

I pray for it to happen. This game engine is old, the coding is old, the graphics are old, etc. PERFECT excuse to jumpstart STO2. And in STO 2, don't give me my TRIBBLE back, just continue my LTS & I'm happy.

Yeah and get even more glitches and freezes from an improperly tested game no thanks. I'll stick with the issues the game has right now instead of having an entirely new can of worms to wrangle. Besides nothing wrong with an old game engine look at WOW still thumping along on its engine.

haven't WoW upgraded its engine few times over the course of development?

I shudder at the thought of this but would probably start again. They would probably have to offer something big for free to get most of the players back though.
