Late to the party....

Ok coming back to STO after a prolonged break...sooo I'm a little late to the party for this discussion. Just finished the Iconian War series and what an absolute disappointment. Really? the Evil Race that has been working from the shadows through the past seasons just ends with "Truce"? Just forget about the billions and billions they killed, countless races they have manipulated into slaves and multiple planets they have destroyed. Just "Us with all knowing advanced Iconian technology and I forgot to put in my contacts but now I recognize you!, so ummm... sorry about the galaxy wide massacre". The Klingon attitude change out of left field in the final mission "midnight" blew my mind the most. I guess this could be called a "True Star Trek" ending with fireworks, compassion and a truck load of teddy bears. No dialog options have any impact on the ending at least offer a choice. Am I the only one that wanted to see some kind of justice to the end of this story arc seasons in the making?

No you're not the only one who wasn't exactly satisfied with this ending but as you've said yourself you're kinda late for that party.
Just be glad it's finally over and we don't get another bazillion stupid subplots thrown at us that conlduded with "the iconians did it".
Let's see what all this temporal trainwreck will bring in the future, aside from headaches....

Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. We have known the bitterness of defeat and the exultation of triumph. From both we have learned there can be no going back. We must go forward to preserve in peace what we've won in war.

Temporal train wreck that's an understatement. I agree, of all the quality Trek stuff their is to explore, the brain trust always seems to invest in the stupid junk. Dyson spheres, space dinosaurs, temporal mechanics, anything Voyager. The hits will keep coming, I suppose.

The problem is if they want to make full story arcs that are somewhat related to established canon they don't have much of a choice.
Both TOS and TNG had pretty much no overarching story at all. Their theme for the whole series was "people in space", end of plot. VOY, DS9, & ENT tried hard to give the whole series a purpose and ended up with mixed results.
But the problem is cryptic can't make every villain of the week a major antagonist. They tried it with a lot of them and almost all ended up as icoian salve cannon fodder probably beacause there just isn't anything about them in the first place.
So all that's left are those somewhat subpar storylines like the temporal cold war that caused more headaches than the common cold.

It has been discussed a lot, it has been pointed out this is not a "we won, yay" ending, as in the Dominion war (where Federation could dictate terms, imprison founders and such). It's rather a "whoah, we didn't get annihilated? awesome!" ending where the Alliance could do little but acknowledge that barely surviving against a vastly superior enemy was already a huge success.

    (...)

This here is the problem. Why do they think the game has to be like this? - it doesn't. And I am what people would call a canon fanatic. Especially because I am I say: Don't! Start writing original stories again. You can incorporate known races and all that, but we don't have to stick to thirtry year old television scripts for them to make sense. What about the Deferi? Is that it, we never visit them again? Do something original, stop this forced show recognition, stop hiring every single actor you can get a hold on to do voice overs to re-heat old plots, use the money to improve the game and start writing original stories again.

If STO only sticks to canon name-dropping they start canon conflict and never stop reheating cold stories. If they tell original stories a lot of this wouldn't matter because it's something new - just try to stay within character and we're good.

EDIT: The ending to the Iconian arc "Midnight" was indeed one of the better episodes, but context is important here. Of course the Trek like resolution of the conflict was very welcome over endless stupid shooting of cardboard villians, but it was also generally liked because, I think, it ended that obnoxious four-year-storyline that went nowhere. I'm afraid Cryptic draws the wrong conclusions here.

The Deferi, New Romulus, Tholians - those were storylines without deep show canon roots and they were good, at least better than the rest - but they completely dropped that, for some weird reason. The Mirror Universe is kind of original, but they dont expand that story further than "We're back, we're evil and we shoot you for no reason other than we're evil". Despite my opinion that the MU is a very poor choice to expand your game on at least they could have done anything that didn't try to be the shows again.
