If someone meets the minimum system requirements, the game should function for them without turning into a slide show.
At any rate, Cryptic shouldn't always cater to the lowest common denominator.
Making money means exactly that. Appealing to the broadest customer base possible. That this runs contrary to this sentiment of hardware elitism is just a bonus.

Been away a while. The amount of visual affects in combat is way overwhelming in my opinion. Taking the immersion of combat away with all the flashy lights, blinking clouds, etc.
Basically, is there a way to reduce/remove the visual affects of Boff actions in space?
Personally, I hope they *increase* the visuals. Seriously, ppl with crappy video cards should not try and ruin it for everyone else.
If ppl are looking for a personal client slider to reduce graphics, I'm fine with that, of course.
You were also that one that liked the visals of the Iconian missions, I believe. Well, each person has its own taste. I remember the batman series from the sixties. To represent that Batman and Robin were strip comics, you saw on screen during a fight 'WHOOSH' and 'WHAAM'. It is the same kind of creative skill we see now in this game.
The Iconian missions had special visuals? I forgot, but I'm sure I liked them. The prettier, the better, far as I'm concerned.
Way I see it, though, ppl can already reduce graphics visuals to almost zero. If they want to see it 'fixed' even further, they should just get a better card, honestly. I bought a GTX 980 a few months back (I had a GTX 580 earlier), because I like things pretty in STO (and Second Life and such). At any rate, Cryptic shouldn't always cater to the lowest common denominator.
Players shouldn't have the necessity to upgrade their hardware every time Cryptic decides to reveal another visual that is a horrible resource drain to get pretty-looking game (trust me, you are not the only one who likes things pretty in games). While my R9 270x is not exactly on par with your GPU, it's still considerable overkill judging recommended system requirements. Yet, my game is still stuttering at certain places, even though i'm playing with medium settings. Or at least update requirements and say that this game will run optimally only if you have ultimate high-end hardware.
Yeah, its really hard to see thing sometimes so it would be nice if they toned it down a bit. Also not sure why are some of you arguing graphics card since the issue discussed is the amount of visuals on screen obscuring the view not the drain on the pc system
Visual fx all over the place does not equal pretty. Clear and simple is usually better visually and from a game standpoint helps you see what's going on better than the Jackson Pollock painting the game can sometimes look like. If that improves performance too, all the better.

You're arguing beside the point initially brought up. Most people, including the TC, are arguing for lowering the visual vomit, not because it taxes their graphics cards, but because it's an ugly eyesore that has no place in Star Trek. Data or Worf twiddling with their consoles never caused the Enterprise to light up like a tacky goddamn Christmas tree.
Pointless blinking lights used to entertain the slow of wit belong on Las Vegas on the Strip, not in Star Trek.
I don't have a problem with lag or anything like that from visual effects, but I find that there are just way too many things going on now visually. I can't even see my ship anymore because of all the visuals that pop up around my ship.

Well said.
I can run the game on max settings with a 7950, 60 FPS most places and 30 FPS the rest (only places I get a bad hit is the new Delta purple space missions (where lowering the settings doesn't make a difference) tiny parts of New Rom and 1 area in Voth space zone (with the floating debris)) This isn't about slow down or graphics lag, maybe he just didn't read the thread lol.
Here is an easy way to do this, have in the options a display list of all skills, with a simple check box for on or off visual effects. This is client side only so no one needs to get butthurt about having stuff show up etc. This way you have chose to have EPtS shield bubble effect go off but turn off a bunch of the other visuals that annoy you personally.
Client side options dont effect the server and also help people with low pc specs, or problems with visual issues. I for one would turn off almost all the effects on skills so the game looked more like the shows/movies. This wouldnt do anything about proc spam but would be a nice option to have.

THIS!!!!!!
came back after a 1 years off, been playing for a couple days, the amount of visual affects is just stupid. Dont get me wrong, I like some of them but it is WAY to overwhelming. Immersion is out the door soon as everyone pops off there abilities.
I agree with everyone about the visual effects. I've turned down all my graphics and the display resolution to play this game. It is visual overload. Maybe the graphic artists should watch a few TNG or Voyager episodes.
Yeah, in the Tholian Red Alerts when you get in the battle with the Tholian Capital Ships and Escorts and KLW, Tykens, Grav Wells, TS3, BFAW, CRF3, Suppression and Artillery Barrages and on and on are all going off and webs are being cast around like water, it is a very busy sight to say the least.

One of the reasons PvP wasn't so popular.
PvP was popular in that times... In this video was used extreme tactic of 5 control science captains.
Back to OP, I would welcome the option to turn off the visual effects for the other players. Currently, there are to much visual effects in the game.
If entire team has resonance beams, kemocite weaponry or other "blinkers", it is realy crazy and confusing.
Pointless blinking lights used to entertain the slow of wit belong on Las Vegas on the Strip, not in Star Trek.
At this would probably be the main problem , the devs often visit Las Vegas, they so much love a blinking lights and a player's passion for gambling with a lock-boxes.
With all the options available, I really wonder why there isn't such an option for the visuals as well. I vote for a system that let's us either turn others or our own visuals down, maybe one by one or just everything at once. I am sure that this step would also help the general server performance, and If I would have to guess, I'd say that the vfx spam was also part of some major problems in the past, server/performance vice. There was a time when it was all fun and good looking and what not, a few years ago...
I don't think, that it would take much to add one or several options to switch off certain power fx. It's already possible in demorecord. I just wished they would add all or at least some of those options to the game, too.

If only it were that simple. Unfortunately, it seems the more visual player spam there is the higher the chances of NPC weapons fire against you being rendered as 'lower priority'. Potentially not showing at all. That is Cryptic code and not one's graphics card.
I don't believe Cryptic should reduce the spam until such time as their team have a chance to update the buff/debuff indicator interface. It is extremely strange to me at least that this hasn't been prioritised in years. Next to visual effects, status indicators are omni-present and yet poorly describe the effects and/or don't at all.
Once this UI element is updated I think I'd be able to side with introducing more control over your own rendering of visual effects. Perhaps prioritising your own effects next to NPCs and gradually fading out other players should one wish.
Your ability to discern other players' buff/debuff status should be severely limited anyway. My first preference would be making you interpret specific sensor readings, rather than just telling you outright that the other guy just hit APA and TT.
And I still fail to see how an option to dial down the visible effects proves either a "crappy video card" or a desire to "ruin it for everyone else." Even if I was running the game in my own personal holodeck, I'd want to dial back the space vomit visuals.
Other than the hollow, meritless "I don't want the developers worrying about this instead of the things IIIIIIIIIIIII want" argument, the only reason to oppose this is if they somehow derive joy from forcing other people to see that TRIBBLE, or maybe they don't want to admit exploiting deliberately-caused frame rate lag to "defeat" someone by cheating....
My rig can handle all the visual spam they can throw at me. All I want is a toggle that turns off the abilities light show. I just want to see my ship. Is that asking too much?

What engines do you have? There are an option turn it off. Right click on the engines and disable visuals.
It's pretty much this hard to keep just one timeline intact. ♪
