I want to enjoy it for the story, and I don't even mind the ground missions. I am sure many of you will disagree with me, but after years of playing Muds and MMOs. I come to understand one simple thing. I like Simple but requires some skill.
See, I group up with some people. They tell me just to get Fire at Will and blow through the content, or some other thing and nuke the heck out of people. See my problem with this is. Fire at will is..boring. Now I have been playing my own way. I like cannons and well timed torpedos. I like simple, but fun. Skill does not need to have tons of buttons to hit, Having fewer buttons but them having more impact is fun for me. I can't speak for any of you on that matter. My friends are telling me my play style is not very well balanced for at end game content and I want find enjoyment taking forever to kill things. The game balance just does not fit with it. I either abuse the system, or be worthless in groups.
I am a huge fan of Star Trek: Starfleet Command III but that is during its time. I would not find it as much fun now as we have advance from it. Still, Simple is not always bad. Spamming lasers until every little thing blows up is a bad form of simple.
So with that rant gone, How would I change the game for my enjoyment and irk most of the community I bet? Simple really.
Crews: Focus on One skill only, and that skill they can level up and get better at it. Want a guy good with cannons? Or how about Torp guy? Only 1 skill, and that skill have more impact as it does now. Crew having 4-5 skills is just bloat, and it is not balance well.
Captain skills: I do like the whole Alpha and whatever movements. Why not focus more on that? Commands or stances that players can switch into, depending on what is going on.
Class system: I like the Idea of the classes, but it seems like they are all just dps through play style from what people are telling me. I feel like this was a miss chance. At this point I would just drop the class system and let players pick how they want to play, What ships they want to fly, and what play styles they feel like doing. Balance it out through that.
That is just my input, this game just not be for me.
Honestly there are only a few general rules to follow to be viable at endgame, tac console stacking and weapon type selection as well as good piloting, that sort of thing. Most if not all weapon loadouts can be viable in advanced content if you do things just so. Dont listen to people who say your playstyle or weapon preference is wrong. That will only serve to irk and demoralise you. Instead ask how to get the most out of the gear and playstyle you favour, you will likely find you can improve with only minor changes whilst still keeping true to your general preferences. I run a few escort cannonboats and of course many dps focused players will say " ah nono you want all beam arrays and faw on that etc". Whilst they may be right from a top end dps or pvp perspective I can totally maul advanced content in any cannonboat I run. And my fleetmates can attest to not loving the gentle smooches from my epic quad cannons in friendly pvp I am not a mod or owner of this channel but I use it regularly and find it to be a nice change. Competance and friendly fun in the same place, check out the "star trek battles" channel. Sometimes the people you run with etc can have a large influence on ones views as to what is needed and necessary and how to improve in a way that is appealing to you. Ive run missions with guys in connies and basic white gear and lord knows what else from that channel and had great fun. I have also slogged it out with the heavies in ker'rat and had a good time.
"If this will be our end, then I will have them make SUCH an end as to be worthy of rememberance! Out of torpedos you say?! Find me the ferengi!".
I've never had a problem playing with my Canon ship builds while completely ignoring what the min maxing maniacs say is "Required"
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
I will not feed forum flames, not even on christmas.">

If you don't enjoy the game, you shouldn't play. To be clear, it's not that I don't *want* you to play, but no one should spend their time forcing themselves to play something they aren't enjoying. No game is "right" for everyone. That is neither a flaw of the game nor a flaw of the person. Each person should find the game they enjoy and play it as long as they do. That's really all there is to it.
Its a game, play the way you want to & enjoy it dont let people tell you how you should play & hate it.
Pretty much this OP. Play the way it's fun for you. Don't let the others to dictate that for you. It is good to listen to advice there & there, but if it proves to not be fun, just do what you enjoy instead.
Also for some folks in this thread; can't we just get along & be nice?

Cool, I might give it another chance. Thanks for the info. I do want to play how I want, but if how I wanted to play mean I could not do end game content, because of balance issues. It would have been stressful to go through that. This game does have a ton of grindy elements, and to grind that much just to not feel like I can play how I want and still push forward. Would make me sad. I will stick with it, and thank you all for the advice.
Yeah, play it how you want. I have a character that's rocking cannons in a Bird of Prey, one of the weakest ships out there hull-wise and I'm doing just fine in end game. I only have one ship that uses BFAW and I elected not to use the embassy consoles. Go ahead and experiment with different builds. Find out what works for you and above all, have fun!
What's with Occupy Fire At Will movement lately? When are we allowed to use it or not use it? Why do people care so much about other people's builds?
I'm pretty sure it's just whining....
Meaning me? I did not know much about the game. Just mention it because that is what I was told to use. I don't really care if it is OP or not. I was more worried that the game was not balance around letting me play how I want. Does that make sense?

No the thread about why Cryptic should nerf BFaW.....

Right now, the "Occupy Fire at Will" movement is in full steam because they're trying to get away from BFaW as the "one true skill"... As evidenced by Ragerblade's post.

There's just enough "balance" in the game that any fairly-decent build is more than enough to "handle the content", both single player and most "advanced" missions...
Yet, there's that small and annoyingly vocal group that, if you add 5 seconds to their mission time, you've ruined their day/immersion/life. These people advocate getting into the "one true build" and then they can pug their way to 5 second missions...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

so, you can't enjoy the game because someone told you how to play? Just ignore them.
Look, damage in this game is over the top. Its so bad over the top that the next to worst damage weapon in the game (beam arrays, coming in right after turrets) is not only viable but highly used by people that can kill a boss in a couple of seconds.
High end cannons do much, much more damage than beam arrays. You may not be as good at killing tons of trash in a 360 arc, but you can obliterate a GW pile faster / better with scatter. You can kill a boss faster with rapid fire.

I'll let you in on a secret on that. Those are merchants sitting on an ungodly amount of lockbox DHCs waiting for Cryptic to nerf beam banks along with BFAW to the ground lol...
