I have been playing STO for a long time now, when I started tanks and DPS roles where still reliant. I can understand as the power creep climes the roles would be unbalanced, Arc after all needs to get paid, so I understand the grind for power and the highest DPS. But when I started playing the immersion was different, playing a Captain in iconic ships you recognize from movies and shows felt fun, large battles of KDF vs. Federation was fun. And as the DPS clime started it all seemed to get unbalanced and silly. Now we can fly and have to look at...Iconian ships? Throwing more and more random ships with just a little bit more power is an obvious way to make money and I get that, it's not news to anyone but there is no lore to it anymore. In the movies and shows a Federation Dread or Odyssey cruiser would be the top dogs of the sky, large, powerful ships. Now they are trash at best.
It would be nice to see ships coming out stick closer to the factions they are designed for, why in the world would I want to look at a Bio-Dread or an Iconian carrier as a Federation officer? While I continue to play the game I realize small things that could be changed to make the experience so much better, like new T6 ships sticking to the factions and changing in size and looks. Re-balancing the roles to bring the healer-tank-DPS system back and give active players a free respec token so they can start fresh. If the system was more balanced and not so much power creep based I would even consider paying a monthly fee to play a game that was just a little more immersive, balanced and bigger.
In the end this is just a vent and I am sure many many players will have holes to poke in it but I would like to hear from you all as well, maybe it's just me but I liked playing in my Odyssey Star Cruiser more then a Breen War-ship, even though the War-Ship would down the cruiser like a paper airplane it felt more fun to be in this large Federation cruiser.

As for the MMO Trinity, probably not coming back,as I believe the current EP of the game has said that he dislikes and feels that model is out-dated.
Oddy is still viable, you'll likely need to re-build it, but it's capable of pulling it's weight at least with enough stuff bolted on.
Also, if you were willing to sub, you'd have respec tokens from leveling up.
Check the fleet recruiting stations, and look for fleets that emphasize canon ships or are RPing in a reasonable setting.
I like to stick to faction, more precisely culture specific ships. Not ordinarily for the explanation you give, but even now I'm putting it on the list of reasons. I'm not putting a Ferengi officer in a Vulcan ship, and I'm not putting a Klingon in a Gorn ship.
The right ship for the right captain is what I always say.
I've always been against the idea of cross-faction ships. There should be zero cross faction ships. Instead, all ships that are "cross-faction" should be their own, neutral faction. That would then make sense: all of our non-faction ships can continue to fly around, though as some kind of "pirate" / "privateer" / "wanderer" faction that has a "lesser" role in the game. This could be a Ferengi Faction, where all those random ships are salvaged and recycled... this can be a borg faction, where the assortment of random ships are simplay all assimilated, it could be an orion pirate faction, or even a blank nothing faction. A little creativity goes a long way. That's my hugely amazing idea, anyway.
I think Cryptic got it right with the Temporal Ships, as well as the Dyson ships. No single ship is open to more than one faction, though there can be obvious themes that cross between factions. More of that = WIN.
Controversial Comment:
Factions don't need to be equal. I think it's lame that Romulans pick between one of two allies. I think that Cryptic's design to keep things "Red" vs "Blue" is lame, and that Romulans don't have their own cool starbases is lame. I'm not saying there should have been more romulan content, I'm saying that its ok if there is less to do as a Romulan. (This is comming from one who considers his character to be non-Federation, BTW) Why do the three factions need to be "equal?" Is it really that critical that all three factions have identical ships and identical structures and identical everything? Why is it bad that the Federation has way more ships to pick from than the other two? Why not boost all Klingon ships' DPS by 50%, and cut their hulls down by 75%?
Factions don't need to be run off a template. What about a non-combat, economic faction that has only Tier-2 ships? What about a Terran Empire faction that has nothing to do but raid outposts and blow everything away? What about a PvP only faction? (like what klingons were in that second year) You can play monopoly as the banker. I get it - far fewer players would want to play those faction, and those that would would play them less. So? That's what the Federation is for: all your mainsteam trek.
We need to figure out how to get some actual exploration in this game, and some currency that actually makes sense. R+D items you actually need to find. Dilithium you actually mine with mining ships. Reputation you earn with diplomacy. Let's all loose some weight while we're at it, and start exercising. And can I get a girlfriend, too? Brunette, please.

It is a good game still, but for how long...
As for OP, losing the lore, breaking immersion, 4th wall and all that jazz... I've been struggling with that myself. To cope, I spend LOTS of time in Foundry designing canon-centric stories with a strong, iconic Trek feel.
