Mission: Dust to Dust query

Has anyone completed it on Normal, without dying, and how did you do it?

I, personally, have only ever done it on Normal and I can get through the 1st and 2nd parts of the maze portion without dying. And, while I've never taken the time to test out my theory, I'm pretty sure that the last maze, the floor slider part, can be completed by using/jumping up on the lips on the far right side of that room. You would have to use your gun to activate the sliding floors, then quickly get out and onto the first lip, and then repeat this process all of the way across the room.

The main reason I've never bothered to test this theory is I can also manage to get across the entire platform, if I'm willing to die three time and rezing on one of the upper platforms and continuing the mission from there. It's not a clean win, but it's a quicker win.

So how did you finally beat this mission? I'm asking for curiosity and so that if someone new does a search of Mission: Dust to Dust, he/she will have options for a resolution.

Feel free to post diagrams, caps and/or vids of how you finally did it best.

Been a long time since I completed this, but I know I made it through Hard mode at least once without needing to respawn. I find shooter mode to be very useful for the floor puzzle, letting me target the switches I need more reliably. Also, use a weapon with a shorter primary fire burst and good range, particularly sniper rifles. The increased range will help ensure you can hit the target properly and the shorter firing animation will keep you from getting locked down too long so you can switch targets.

Afraid I don't remember the sequence well enough to say exactly how I got through, it was a lot of trial and error figuring out timing. One thing to watch out for that I can recall is the floor plating on each panel. Some of them will retract the panel immediately if stepped on, they should have a visual indicator of this. Getting through the puzzle without respawning requires both quick reaction on the wall targets and not stepping on those trapped panels.

The universe has a wonderful sense of humor. The trick is learning how to take a joke.

I did that mission on elite once.... I had so many injuries after finishing it I joked that even my hair hurt

I've done the trick with sneaking along the edge. It works but it feels like cheating.

One approach I've seen in team play is to have everyone shooting all at once, that way the floors stay up more. Getting a first time go is a bit hard though since EVERYONE has to avoid the floor panels and they retract the first time anyone hits one.

Then there's Zerg Rush. Run as fast as you can and hope to get to the next respawn before you die. Frosted boots, motion accel etc.. help.

Unfortunately, I've not been silent about my experiences with "Dust To Dust" - much dying and respawning, quite a bit of yelling in frustration, a bit of interest lost in playing missions for a while afterwards - so I'm not much help here. The only thing I can add involves the final puzzle room, the floor slider; if an Engineer properly places a turret, it can usually target the first one or two generators in each segment and shoots them. This doesn't stop them from disappearing, just makes them come back faster so that a player can focus more on subsequent platforms... not that it was much help for me, though.

Yeah, they worked to a small degree, but they kept wandering off to shoot at whatever Generators they could, so they weren't really any help.

I found this vid that shows one play doing it that way.

I will have to figure out how to jump like that because I can never been able to bound over those metal lips like that. But clearly it's possible. Is jumping that high a Catian trait?

Oh, forgot to post the entire vid.

On crossing through the electrical maze, I'm much more slow and methodical about it but can do it without getting shocked. On the floor part it's just as shown. Two panels, pause, two more, pause and so forth until reaching the safe floor. It took me a few tries, to get it right.

Yeah, both Caitians and Ferasans can jump higher than other races.

Or, given Zed's current forum sig, perhaps 'Snoop Dog' might be in order? ;)

Always thought that dying WAS part of the final part of that mission? You mean its not?
Actually I've been able to do it without dying maybe 4 times out of the dozens of times I've run that mission. It was all LUCK not skill involved at all!! I too got frustrated at all the dying part,, but after a while I realized that at a certain point it was easier to die and respawn closer to the end point than it was to try NOT to die... Don't get me started on that damned maze!!! Sometimes I ran the mission and got the maze first try,, other times I would wander around for what seemed like hours,, a few rage quits later I found if I stand on the platform on the " end" side to get my bearings I can usually get it first or second shot.

Overall I think Dust to Dust IS a great mission with many many annoyances... but the great missions usually have great annoyances.

I completed it without dying the last part with the moving platforms was the toughest though if you figure out which generator makes which platform move and time it right you can get across no problem at all but it takes practice.

There's a map of the maze on the wiki.

BTW, that reminds me we need maize in STO. :P

Ugh, did this mission today on toon number 3. I died at least a dozen times. Probably more like 20. It was awful. A lot of "adult" language was involved.

Dust to Dust is not the only mission that creates "Adult" language for me.. but it is the top 5.
