Good carrier pets to use

piotrtiberiuspiotrtiberius Member Posts: 55 Arc User
A few days ago, Cryptic gave away 3 ships, two of which have usable hanger bays.

It would be a shame not to try them out, especially since these are the first carriers I've owned. What carrier pets are considered most useful right now?

I believe Elite Swarmers are still the preferred fighter for most content, although Elite Scorpions still have the edge in Borg STFs due to the large quantity of unshielded targets. Yellowstones are the preferred support pets for Feds due to their Tractor Beam usage. Unfortunately I'm not sure about KDF pets which accounts for one of those ships, but I believe the Marauder's Marauding Force pets are pretty good.

They've all got hanger pets, the Klingon and Romulan ships had a bug on their hanger bays which was preventing them from recharging at the proper rates. That got fixed with the new Season release on Tuesday.

I'm sure your DPS is great, but as Kahless said, "a petaQ with high system mastery is still a petaQ." (Well, he should have said it...!)

Where to get elite swarmers? Does one have to own an Oblisk?

Edit: Tier 3 fleet spire, nevermind.

Are the elite scorpions really that bad btw? You'd advise against them?

Scorpions are among the better fighter-type hangar pets, but suffer from some of the same issues all cannon-heavy pets run into, keeping their targets in front of them to capitalize on their primary weapons. Swarmers use beam arrays which have wide firing arcs, so they're more capable of hitting the targets with strong weapons. Scorpion torpedoes can be good, but when fired high-yield they tend to get wiped out by AoE spam from NPCs, something the Borg don't really have, and like all torpedoes they don't do much damage when they splash against shields. Swarmers use Transphasic torps which partially mitigate that problem as well. But Scorpions are a good choice for missions like Cure Space due to the generators not having shields, thus taking the full damage from the superior plasma torps.

The Excelsior Retrofit has a hangar? When did that happen?

As for the Marauder: The Marauding Force and Advanced Marauding Force (Dilithium) aren't terrible, but in my experience Advanced Orion Slavers are the way to go. Disruptor beam and quantum mine spam from 6 shuttles actually deals quite a bit of hurt, and they steal contraband (not often, but they do), and we all know that contraband = money (either dil or EC, take your pick).

Romulan: I haven't actually flown a Romulan carrier yet, because I took a year-long hiatus from STO. However, I would deem the Scorpions 'adequate' for PvE stuff, but there are definitely better options out there (Swarmers, for example. If you can get access to them, they're freakin' brilliant).

I don't like ships with one hangar pets because it is a waste of starship mastery.
Also, fighters and shuttles dies too fast. Better look for ships with frigates (Vo'quv, Kar'Fi, Scimatar, Jem'Hadar, etc...)

Gah, my bad. You were talking about the ships from the New Dawn giveaway. In my brain that got mangled into you talking about the Dreadnaught pack.

    Sorry, man!

all fighters are awful, so you want to use frigates on a carrier, and each carrier only can use 1 type. The 1 bay ships with pure fighters, most pets are awful. I use the ones that steal contraband -- they die like flies, but 2 of 3 times a night I get X3 contra for free at least. (that would be very expensive pets from starbase for kdf side, if you are not up on such things).

For my fleet vo quv, im a firm believer in my qaw'dun bop's. but for fed? Yellowstone runabouts, use em on my yamato, they are excellent.

I've been using delta flyers on my fed recently, they've been pretty good - firing most/all of the time, and the occasional tachyon beam helps pull those shields down faster...

Having said that, I might give the Yellowstones a go...

Is okay, I figured it was something along those lines. Still, I simply cannot resist spewing random sarcasm in all aspects of my life.... drives the wife absolutely crazy.
