I just love the Trek universe. And rumor has it that there's a TV show (and possibly some movies) that might be based off the universe of the game.

I would have liked to say story, but that's not it. SWTOR has a good story, but I hated playing it. So I say it's the mechanics. Space Combat is just fun.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
I get to fly starships (including my beloved Connie), shoot phasers, fire photon torpedoes, beam down to planets, etc., and all with the appropriate visual and sound effects. So I voted game mechanics.
But as others have said, the story is part of it too. While the grinding usually turns into nothing but pew pew, I think they've done a good job overall with the missions and story arcs to be true to Trek.
I didn't really need another game when I arrived here; it was mostly to enjoy more time with my gaming buds, and the added attraction that it was Trek. Some of the actualization has been spotty, but we're mostly having fun...

It's the only Star Trek game that is in continual development, isn't abandonware made 10-15 years ago, and incorporates enough of the franchise that it keeps me playing.
It isn't perfect, but it's Star Trek "enough" for me.
Fun mechanics, both ground and space, because if one thing stands out apart from the many Other reasons, it's that, and without which I wouldn't bother playing in the first place.
Otherwise, I grew up on TNG, always liked SciFi, paranormal, and fantasy as well, so bundled up into a game with an ok community makes it fun.
More importantly it is good escapism as someone already mentioned in a package that offers lots of freedom on how you want to play and who you want to role play.
It isn't over the top like FPS-Z or race sims which can get tiring after a few hours of intense PVP or long races, but it is fast paced, and even that can be controlled to some extent such as hopping into an escort vs a tank, or a ground character made for team support/healing/buff or tactical.
The character visuals and customizations, as well as ship models and environments are stunning, as are many of the stories. I prefer gameplay over graphics as my most favorite games in the past had really poor graphics and even low polygon count, but it deserves a mention nonetheless.
Naturally, taking screenshots both in and out of action is part of the fun for me, and as a way to enjoy and share what ST and STO is about, plus as a way to remember the fun times and ridiculous things as they happen like an unfolding story that goes beyond the main scripts and backdrops.
I also enjoy the community on the forums, devs actually dropping a line or two, or the write ups that appear in the news section. Plus there's the anticipation of what could be released next as I still think the game engine has a lot of potential, very much like those old games did and still do if only someone expanded on them more.
Team up with friends (RL and/or ingame) and hit 5-man PVE queued maps (premade or pug).
That’s Star Trek Online for me! All the rest is just annoying means to get there.
My only adversary the past year in doing so has been Cryptic with its Delta Rising adjustments to game (lag, fails, increased HP, upgrade cost). There have been quiet a few casualties but those who are left over are 2-3 times stronger than before and earn 2-3 times as much Dil as before. They even do so in 2-3 less playing time than before.
GG Cryptic?

When I started playing 3 years ago, I barely understood how to play an MMO. Initially I played because it's Star Trek which is my favorite Sci-Fi franchise. After maxing out my first character, I started and maxed several more. So I guess you could say that I used to play for story.
At some point, I became obsessed with collecting new "stuff" aka shinies and that's what I've been doing ever since.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
Other as I love the ships. I got hooked when it was very much a casual game but had I started in the last year or so I know that would never have happened.
I love the game. Been playing it now for roughly 4 or 5 years. and progressed alot too.
Its escapism to me from reality. I do moan and grumble if the game does'nt work right, that being disconnected from the server or any bad bugs that occur. I've been a trekky all my life and i'm now 50 years of age. Have watched all the tv stuff and the movies, from when it first started in the 60's right up to present day.
the story and game play jsut all becomes a grind and not much fun, they are also all fed centric which most people play I DO NOT. so only reason im still here after years its the ONLY place to play as a Klingon .
Trophies for killing FEDS ahh those were the days.

We come in peace, SHOOT TO KILL!
Tactical Team sucked, once upon a time. I got it buffed. Don't think for a minute that Cryptic ignores forum feedback.

Yeah me too, but I gotta admit Mine's been waning at late. Maybe I'm just getting burnt out.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles

I heard that rumor as well.

Indeed, it's "Star Trek". That's the only reason. If this were any other game by Cryptic, I wouldn't be here or care.
