The STO Year

sevenofnine13141sevenofnine13141 Member Posts: 4,273 Arc User
I've been noticing that the year is confusing. According to TrekGuide.com, Stardate 84944 so happens to be January 2411, yet the STO calculator has that as 2007, and STO Calculator has today's date as 93363.27, which is in 2420 on TrekGuides Stardate Calculator. Any ideas why is the year 2420 there, but 2410 on STO? Anybody?

    Because it's a factor of the games that barely no one notices, and even fewer (including the devs) care about.
    Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
    Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

    @anazonda Figures.... We might as well say "We're in 2420!" or something. :neutral:

    Hey... it took them 4½ years to get to 2010...

    You're all silly. In my head it's 2414 about to be 2416....... What? I don't buy the rapid promotion in the field story :P

    By everything that happened and the development of LOTS and LOTS of ship classes (it takes a lot of time, 2/3 years in TNG/DS9 to have a prototype and now a new class is designed to fight the current enemy) we should AT LEAST be in 2415 if not 2420...
  • sevenofnine13141sevenofnine13141 Member Posts: 4,273 Arc User
    Yeah. It's probably atleast 2415 on headcanon.

    Real time passage of time in game would feel a lot better than a dozen different full scale wars over the span of two very eventful years. Alternatively, advance the year with each new season - I wouldn't mind going on 2420 by now.

    @tokkeenaturak Agreed, I actually would not mind the year being shifted to 2420 or 2411 itself.

    Definitely agree with this. I love STO, but this is one thing that does bug me.

    @stormwraith01 Completely agree with you there. I personally enjoy STO, but this whole timeline year thing is so confusing, even with the Stardate. Really increasingly annoying, to be honest.

    I am a 52 year old Star Trek fan and have always considered "Stardate" to be literary GIBBERISH created by the hack TV writters on the original Star Trek series.

    @velocitore Regardless, the current STO year is so confusing. We seriously need the official year cleared up... and after that little Delta Recruit retcon, I have absolutely no idea what year STO is in now. Devs say it's 2410, but by the length of the war, and the retcon, we should be in 2411 by now. :neutral:

    It's the year 2410, Stardate 87000 to 87999. (Or, whatever works for you)
  • sevenofnine13141sevenofnine13141 Member Posts: 4,273 Arc User
    Yeah, but we're past Stardate 87999. We're in the 90000 part of the Stardates now.

    Nah, don't trust those calculators. Think of it like this. The first two numbers go up per year (per Trek season) which is evident if you cross check Trek episodes' years with their Stardates. (TNG episode list) Then time slows by STO's seasons.

    2364 = 41###.# (TNG: S1: Neutral Zone)
    2365 = 42###.# (TNG: S2: The Child)
    2366 = 43###.# (TNG: S3: Evolution)
    ...
    2377 = 54###.# (VOY: S7: Endgame)
    2379 = 56###.# (Star Trek: Nemesis)
    ...
    2409 = 86###.# (Star Trek Online: S1-S7)
    2410 = 87###.# (Star Trek Online: S8- )

    Like I said, time slows by STO. Here are Seven of Nine's communications to Janeway during the Iconian War, which takes place in S10. Her stardates are in the 87###.#'s. url="http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/9507953-star-trek-online%3A-tales-of-the-war-%2318"]Tales of the War 18[/url

    Off topic, but in my head-cannon, I personally think her Stardates are too close to the beginning of the year. I think her 87059.01 should actually be 87359.01 based on Tom's Stardate in Tales of the War 1, which he had in the 873##.#'s. I think her final 872##.# dates should actually be 874##.#; but that's just me.

    We just have to accept that all the big events and seasons we go through happen within a single year. 2409 was from real life 2009 to 2013, and 2410 is from real life 2014 to 2018 (probably).

    You have my agreement 100%. This is almost 2416.

    But even if the game did start in 2410, I doubt anyone could reach Admiral in only 6 years.

    I always felt the leveling content should be backdated 10 years or so. Virtually none of that would conflict with the game lore

    The present year is 2410. Much beyond that and the cool Trek guest stars get awkward and we miss out on a Matrix assignment (and yes it could have been disrupted by Soren; I'd rather it just pass through again in 2410).

    I like to think with the same system Voyager used. Each season was its own year.

    If you transplant that system into STO, that still is much too fast to reach Admiral. But at least having each episode arc being a year makes some semblance of sense.

    But ... but, it will mean my female characters will get older and older. Aghhh, I don't want to go to bed with old women.

    All that FTL and time travel has our characters getting in way more than they should in a year.

    Or alternatively, all these near-superweapon misses has Earth's speed slowed considerably so years had to be officially extended. :)

    Back in the klingon war arc we broke time and Q finds it way too amusing to let it be fixed again.
    Several chirstmas parties centered around him in only one year are right up his alley so what do you expect. :D

    Every three months is a Winter Wonderland event, which is too few IMO.
